I agree with farglebargle.   If you are going to do anything important, like calculate your best-case orbital trajectory for reentry of your vehicle filled with live astronauts coming in to the earth's atmosphere in real time, Windoze is definitely not the way to go.  If all you are doing is sending email and surfing the internet, whatever operating system you use will probably fit the bill.

While 85% of the world might use Windoze, most of your web servers are not running on Windoze (I used to build them) because it is too slow and inefficient.

Windows is good as its stright forward and everything is made for it. As for linux you need to have some basic concept otherwise your screwed.

one wonders why someone would ask for help, then not come back to get it, or at least acknowledge the help!
no wonder i am a cynic!

I have Vista and so far seems ok, but I have issues with opening up files that are Word.  I'm not that super great with computers but can get by.  I also had to search for compatible Yahoo/AIM/Java software.  One problem I do have is that my dsl connection keeps getting interrupted.  I am wondering if the computer gets too warm and I have the door open on the cabinet.  Or could this be a problem due to a firewall or something like that?  Would it cause my dsl conn to disconnect.  I think the dsl thing is what is the most frustrating, not to mention either the dsl or the computer help it not in this country.

How old is your DSL modem? They do get old and crap out after a few years...

call your isp about your connection problems, they can probably diagnose and fix it their end. vista does need particular drivers, but is much better at letting you know that, other o/s werent able to diagnose that so well, or locate the needed ones. it's not all beer and skittles, and a large part of vista is designed to stop you stealing stuff we have been used to stealing!!
if you dont have a newer pc with top of the range technology (chips and cards etc,) or only have vista "basic", you are wasting your money and time getting it at all. there are temperature testing progs one can get off the web (google finds them) but doors open is dangerous (live electricity is a killer) but isolating your pc - by pulling out the plug - then hoovering the dust and cobwebs out can help - the fan blades get pretty filthy and inefficient.
vista "premium" and dual core chips plus a very good graphics card are minimum requirements!!

Yeah, this lasted about 2 minutes. Wiped Vista and loaded XP Pro. Love the Core2Duo!

I recently bought a new laptop with Vista. In the beginning it was a pain you know where. But as I've gone along things are running smoother. I also am having trouble using wireless dsl and just plain gave up. Bought a long cat6 cable and running fine. I don't really need wireless anyways. I haven't come across anything that won't run, other than McAfee but that's ok, Norton runs with no problems. I also run Spybot s&d and ad-aware with no problems. I wish I could have waited for Vista to de-bug but needed the computer now! I hope your problems are being resolved.

no siggy, just simply, lilbitshy

I got my new laptop with Vista last week. Used it here at work with the wireless just fine. It took a bit to get used to the difference between XP and Vista but the truth of the matter is that getting used to a laptop versus a desktop PC has been more difficult. I have yet to get the dial-up working, at home, on it because I couldn't find the installation manual and once I found it, have not taken the time to actually do it. Hopefully I will get it done tomorrow.

My biggest concern was in getting all my photos backed up from the, dying piece of crap, desktop. Now that that is done......I am a happy woman.

Yes, we can see here just how straightforward Windows is. Don't get me wrong, I loved Windows 98, it was a beautiful system, IMO the best Microsoft ever came out with. I don't find Windows XP all that user friendly.

Nowadays you don't need that 'basic concept' for Linux. Just download the 'iso' file, burn onto a CD or DVD, and insert into your computer. Most Linux distros now have easy to use installation programs which autodetect much of your hardware. Besides, if your system crashes (which has never happened to me under Linux but happened quite a few times under Windows) you got a Live Linux CD which operates from your CD driver which gets into your system.

I run Mandriva/Ubunto and I'm such a happy bunny!
