He doesn't want me to fight on the 21st and recommends that I don't, but it is my choice. I went into the student wellness center today and talked to the sports doctor. I am going to go back to him after my vacation, but he says that x-rays are not really required. So, I have seen a "medical professional" and will be going back again. He prescribed pain killers (why is it they don't listen when I say that I don't take them?) and told me to take it easy.

And just to clear things up. I don't have health coverage, my mother doesn't have health coverage and my father doesn't have health coverage. I live on my own and support myself. It may come as yet another shock to everyone here, but not everyone can afford to go to the doctor for every little injury. Even when I broke my foot all they did was x-ray it, tell me to stay off of it and give me drugs, I paid over $800 for that special advice. If that is all they were going to do again I will pay my bills with that money.

Either way, thanks again.

Of course it is your choice, but I think you are making a mistake. If one of your ribs is weakened it could become much worse with additional stress.

As for medical insurance... 44 million Americans lack any kind of medical insurance, including 8 million children. Yes, hospitals are required to provided emergency treatment to all comers... but they will bill you for it. And if you don't pay, it will be sent to collections. At the very least your credit rating will be damaged.

When I was an under-employed ex-student (not quite graduated) I had no health insurance. I had to get all my care through a "Faith based initiative" -- I prayed I didn't get sick.

Well I did get sick. And I delayed going to the hospital, even though it was one block from where I lived, because I had no money to pay. It turned out to be Salmonella... nothing that a couple bags of IV fluid and some antibiotics couldn't take care of. But I wouldn't have gotten better on my own.

So yes, Siamsa, I have an idea of what you are facing. And there are millions of Americans who also know what choices you have to make -- pay the rent, or see the doctor.

BTW, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation declares the first week of May (which we are in) to be "Cover the Uninsured Week".

In California they have a program called MIA, medically indigent adults. It is not medical. It is a plan run by either the state or federal government. Basically what it amounts to is you go to the doctor. County hospital. Tell them you have no insurance and no money. Is there a plan or something I could look into?
If MIA is available they will give you the papers to fill out. They cannot turn you down for MIA. You pay as much as you can. I'm not sure of the percentage but it is a very small amount of your actual income. In some cases it is nothing. They give you a little insurance like card. Basically that is how you go to the hospital. It will not harm your credit rating.
It definately is a way to go if you have no insurance.

Not that I think someone is going to come here and tell her to burn her left toe to make it all better and that she would do it because she saw it here.

That isn't as far fetched as you may think. When we lived in Indonesia for a few months one of our servants used a hot iron on her child's back when she was sick--to get rid of the evil spirits.[:o]

For tennis elbow they put a piece of tape on the elbow to keep the evil spirits out.

The only reason the piece of tape on the elbow cure for tennis elbow isn't already standard procedure in the USA yet is that the FDA are still analyzing the merits of it. Hopefully, by this time next year, the piece of tape on the elbow procedure will be fully approved and certified by the FDA. Of course, the only "tennis elbow tape" that will be approved by the FDA for national use will be a proprietary brand manufactured by pharmaceuticals giant Merck & Co. and which will be available exclusively via prescription at a mere $400 a pop ... unless, of course, one illegally purchases heavily discounted Canadian generic versions of the tape via the internet! God bless American capitalism. [sm=lol.gif] For those into DIY, that's now 1002 uses for duct tape! [;)]
