Have been asked to locate one of these "for a friend"[:D]   -can anybody point me to a reliable source.I,m located in London U.K..No objection to internet purchase or second user;all those South American secret Police forces must get rid of their surplus somewhere

What sort of generator?  You can find hand crank radios at any major appliances store around in the US.  But perhaps you want a specific sort of generator?

ultraplay -> RE: Hand cranked generator (5/3/2007 9:26:39 AM)

Hi Lucky Albatross ( That's quite a mouthful)
'Its the type you see in 1930's and 40's movies used to power field telephones. The output from the radios (a British invention[sm=crop.gif]just isn't high enough for the porpoise it will be used for

mistoferin -> RE: Hand cranked generator (5/3/2007 9:29:15 AM)

There's a couple of them for sale on ebay

ultraplay -> RE: Hand cranked generator (5/3/2007 9:35:39 AM)

Can,t seem to see the type I'm referring to-the E-Bay ones are for mobile phones or radios

mistoferin -> RE: Hand cranked generator (5/3/2007 9:43:21 AM)

Hmmmm....the ones I was looking at were military field radio generators....I did a search "hand crank generator"

TheIslandofO -> RE: Hand cranked generator (5/3/2007 9:50:24 AM)

www.surplussales.com  they have TA-1Pt phone generator  sets.

ultraplay -> RE: Hand cranked generator (5/3/2007 9:50:31 AM)

My apologies and thanks-I'd used "cranked" rather than "crank"-several very intimidating items as you say

PONYSEEKER -> RE: Hand cranked generator (5/3/2007 9:56:48 AM)

WOW, if what you are looking for is what I think it is then I havent seen one of those since I was hiking through the woods in the state of Maine when I was a child and stumbled on what appeared to be an old abandoned millitary outpost from probably WWII  (yeah that was a weird and creepy experience since I couldnt actually pin a nationality to the equipment).  You might try survival stores or old military surplus places.  The only other source I can think of is old A.M. radio stations in the United States.  Most of those were equiped with bomb shelters durring the early 50's with survival packs.

ultraplay -> RE: Hand cranked generator (5/3/2007 10:03:26 AM)

Hi Ponyseeker
Enough output to power a radio station sounds a bit daunting[sm=whiteflag.gif]

PONYSEEKER -> RE: Hand cranked generator (5/3/2007 10:07:03 AM)

LOL it couldnt power the whole station .... just enough for the survival items... At that time in history the D.J.s were required to lock themselves in and wait.  It was more for the survival gear I guess but it was not to power the station...lol I suppose there would be at least one that tried..LOL

ultraplay -> RE: Hand cranked generator (5/3/2007 10:08:46 AM)

Wonder what items a DJ would have powered-hair drier maybe

PONYSEEKER -> RE: Hand cranked generator (5/3/2007 10:23:20 AM)

Yeah I wondered the same thing.  There were many more "interesting" things in the stash of supplies that I would fear mentioning on a public board...

Here's the whole phone for less:

I don't think you will find that these little generators put out as much current as the old WWII surplus models you see in the movies.  Those are collectors items now, probably pretty valuable.  Might find one from a militaria collectors site.  Here is some information on the WWII vintage EE-8 field phone:

GrizzlyBear -> RE: Hand cranked generator (5/3/2007 11:20:36 AM)

Turns out that the actual gadget is called a "telephone magneto" and they were also used in the old crank-type antique telephones.  A google search found these ebay listings:

MercTech -> RE: Hand cranked generator (5/3/2007 6:42:16 PM)

Try a navy surplus seller.  You want a sound powered phone "growler".  Puts out about 48v when you spin the crank.

A big thank you for all your help-it's ordered and on its way;I'm whiling away the time making some suitable "attatchments"-maybe I'll post a report after a "test drive"[image]http://www.collarchat.com/micons/m28.gif[/image]

Eszterhazi -> RE: Hand cranked generator (5/4/2007 2:12:08 PM)

Though I can't direct you to a specific location, I sugest you try an army field telephone at an army surplus depot. The field telephones have a hand turned crank generator for ringing. It is quite safe as it cannot generate more than 45-70 Volts at max ...a lot less if you turn it slowly

ultraplay -> RE: Hand cranked generator (5/5/2007 7:12:18 AM)

It's arrived-quite intimidating(I,m in for an in depth "interrogation"tomorrow at the hands of a specially ruthless young(ish)  lady
It has certainly got a real kick even cranked slowly
She's suggested a number of other games so it may well be a long afternoon [image]http://www.collarchat.com/micons/m27.gif[/image]
