Is it just me? Or have others here been struck by the number of poorly written posts? I have heard all of the excuses. "English is not my native language." (All of my friends who have English as their second language are much better than I am in proper usage; so I don't buy that.) "My typing is so poor." (OK, you know it is poor; so why don't you look at what you have typed before you actually send your post?) I am not talking about the few stray obvious typos folks; I am talking about people who think they have something to say, but haven't a clue as to how to say it.

PLEASE... pretty please?

If you lack composition and spelling skills, type your posts using a word processing tool, then copy and paste. It will certainly make life easier for all of old retired teachers.

English is not my native language. Which is why I spell check everything in Word. Then again, this does nothing for my sentence structure ;)

In all honesty, I loathe personally making spelling/grammar mistakes. But as in all aspects of my life, I have learned not to expect everyone to have the same standards as me. That said, I don't think it's fair to ask of everyone to do this. It takes time and it's really a matter of priorities. Also, some people have not mastered spelling/grammar for whatever reason. We should still let them have a voice here.

If you can't read someone's post, then do as I do, ask them questions to try and get them to clarify. Isn't that what communication is about? What I find really unfortunate is when people correct each other's spelling or comment on poor spelling of others (I'm talking about targeting someone in particular).

Oh you are a teacher! Then you must know then that not everyone was gifted with eloquence and acute communication skills.

Also, for the record lovingmaster45, this post has nothing to do with BDSM. It has to do with issues that would be best discussed in Casual Banter section.

As you are appalled by people's spelling/grammar skills, I am not so impressed with certain people's judgment in regards to where to post things.

Well, I try to becoherent and not make to many typo's I agree it stinks to idle through a post so badly mangled it's jibberish. But baring that. I am not in school if I wanted school grade compositons and corrections on simple mistakes I'd take english again.

As long as My posts are not so mangled I don't care if I didn't use a apostraphe correctly or accidently added something that didn't belong.

I meant now that everyone has to be paranoid while posting and checking spelling, and so what if we make a mistake.

Sorry Kitty if that was a bad joke... I didn't mean to hurt your feelings. M

Ears go back to the normal perky and alert position.

We used to all post horrible and typo ridden posts in alt when this one woman DOMINATRIX1 was on cause she'd get so pissed and bent out of shape if any one made a mistake:))

The original poster does have a point. I can be more forgiving in forum posts, but sometimes you see one where the grammar and spelling is so bad you just skip past. But what I find really unforgivable are when profiles are poorly written and spelled. Speaking as a dominant, if I see a submissive with a profile that is poorly written, badly mispelled, containing "do me" lists, and generally uniformative to be the sort I pass on without giving any consideration. Online you have only your words, what you say and how you say it to make a first impression. People will form opinions from that about who you are, what kind of person you are, and whether they would like to get to know you. So if you don't care about how you present yourself, indeed, why should anyone else?

Though I didn't originally post in this thread, I admit that I was in agreement with most of what was said here. Today someone I've not seen in ages dropped by my office to drop off an 'invoice' for some work he'd done. He is in his sixties and his 'invoice' is actually a scrap of paper with only a few numbers on it. His name written in childlike block letters across the top so carefully that you can imagine someone took the time to teach him how.

When he first used to come into the office I'd groan and try to hide my impatience. I'd have to rewrite the invoice and add it all up for him. As time went by, I began to soften towards the man as he is just such a gentle creature. He is lacking in academic intellect, and I'm sure could be considered 'slow' in many areas. He is a good person, a hardworking man and such a pleasure to chat with.

Seeing him made me think about this thread and all the other beautiful souls I know that leave much to be desired in the spelling department, and yes, even at times in the academic intellect aspect of life. They are just as cherished and special to me than those who might meet general society's expectations of 'intellect'. It takes all kinds of people to make the world go round. I'm glad to have been reminded of this today.

P.S. I didn't run this through spell check! LOL!

Well now you can: Google Toolbar 3 Beta with built in Web forms spell checker

For the record, it won't work here as the javascript pop-up where we type our response gets rid of all toolbars…

And I still haven't figured out what this thread in doing in General BDSM... should we singletail the bad spellers? A lash for each typo? Except the masos... we can make them sit on their hands and watch the singletailing...

Here is a related thread which is currently active: SPELLING AND GRAMMMARRRRRR Forum Nazis !

Personally, I think the composition of a person's posts gives insight into their character.

I talk similar to the way I post. So when I say n instead of and, it's not a typo or being lazy it's how I see the words when I type them. Lotsa people like to jump on that and make unkind remarks specially sissymaid. Sissy made some snotty remarks in the forum nozi post about wishing FelinePersuasion would come see the thread, But eh, I j ust ignore them.

I am My own spell checker. I have found that most of the people who participate in these forums write very well. The occasional typo does not bother Me. And I see common words spelled incorrectly all the time.
I have a tendency to become dyslexic at the keyboard. I type too fast, and I do not use the proper format. I type with about about 5 or 6 fingers, but I am very fast. I proof each post, but I usually do not see everything in this little window, so if you go back through My 300+ posts, you might find 2 or 3 that have not been edited.
I agree that it bothers Me much more to receive an obviously careless email or read a very poorly written profile. I don't like to be judgemental, and I will do My best to be fair, but writing skills are important to Me. I believe it carries over, most of the time, to other important areas in life.
I would not say it is indicative of character. One who has had no education at all, can have a fine character. But a fine character is not necessarily going to be comfortable or happy escorting Me to a back tie event.
So those skills do tell Me something.
And LA is right! This doesn't belong on this forum! But here I am, answering anyway!

*Edited: again! Damn! A comma, instead of a period!*

In defence of all the poor spellers and writers out there. It must be really nice to feel so secure in all of your posts. How wonderful for you that you received good schooling and feel so comfortable in all your skills that you can post a complaint about it here. What a horrible inconvenience to you to have to mire through all of our bad grammer and spelling. You know what I find to be a horrible inconvenience? Taking three times longer than you to write a post so that people like you don't think I'm an idiot. I hate having to take the time to search for the right spelling. I have a little pocket speller I use all of the time. Why don't write it somewhere ese and paste it here? Because that is even more of an inconvenience for me. I also know some people for whom english is not their first language, some of them do speak better than I do, some don't. As much as you may dislike reading our mangled posts, we hate hearing complaints from people like you. I'm a highly intelligent person. However my schooling is greatly lacking. Some of that is because I went to 13 schools in 11 years. Some of it is because I am dyslexic. What skills I have learned where mostly self taught, I personally think that should give me a little credit. As soon as I pull the money from my rear I plan to go back to school so maybe I can aquire a fraction of the skill you likely take for granted. Most of us are not here to hear someone else complain about their poor writing skills.
You want to know something ironic? I'm a writer.
If you really are bothered by spelling and everything, skip those posts, pass over those profiles. Before you do that, I would like you to do one thing, thank whomever you believe in that you have the ability to see those flaws. It's just not that easy for everyone.
Oh, Dusty this wasn't meant for you, I am just replying to the whole thread.

This isn't alt(dot)com and DOMINATRIX1 doesn't post on these boards, so you can stop posting that way now, FelinePersuasion.

I'll post any way I wish to sissy you don't like it just ignore me. I don't tell you not to be a sissy or not to wear your sissy clothes. don't tell me how to speak.

If I wanted to be rude and snot nosed like you I could say a buncha things disparaging your likes to be a sissy and post pics with horridly frilly maids outfits. Which I have not. I've never said a thing against you, and you have been snooty to me ever since the shaving cream cum sugestion. When I said I don't even like it why would I want to shave with it. Since that post you seemed to have made it your personal vendeta to be nasty. so stop it's childish.

That's just it, YOU DON'T CARE ... you repeatedly demonstrate NO RESPECT for the time and effort of other people reading these forums ... despite the fact that this an adult English language message board you insist on posting here in some alien baby-talk gibberish!

No, no, FP ... your use of apostrophes is just fine ... it's the way you use the 26 letters of the alphabet and all those other pesky punctuation symbols that really sucks!
