Sorry for this rant...but I got to get this off my chest...

I'm going to bash the Democrats for a minute here... The GOP are no saints either. But I read something by a few Democrats that really, really ticked me off.

There is word that Democrats in congress are considering bringing up the "Fairness Doctrine" again. It is a plan Democrats were supporting before they got booted out of congress in 1994. Basically it means that all forms of media must show equal time to each side of a debate. In others, they are attempting to destroy talk radio personalities like Rush Limbaugh or Michael Savage because they would then be forced by the federal government to put liberals on their programs to explain the other side.
Democrats can't win in the free market of ideas. Air America has failed. So now the Democrats need to find a way to force their ideas through. The fairness doctrine was policy for a number of years, but the FCC repealed the policy in 1987 despite cries from Democrats and liberals. This opened the media up to the free marketplace and conservatives began dominating the airwaves. So now the Democrats are going to try and force the FCC to re-establish the policy.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances."
-1st Amendment

Dems have no chance of passing this while Bush is in office or if the GOP wins in 2008. But if Democrats keep control of congress and wins the white house, and they do such a thing, it will be a very sad day for America. It shows how little Democrats care about simple ideas of liberty and freedom of expression. And people thought the right-wingers are against the constitution because of illegal search and seizure? Just wait till you see how little the left cares about the Bill of Rights. A few years ago on Moveon.org they had a statement that the 1st, 2nd, and 10th amendments were "obstacles" in the way of social progress. They don't want freedom of speech. They don't want freedom of the press. They don't want states to defy the federal government. And they sure as hell don't want you to own a gun. Im not going to call the Dems Nazis because they arn't throwing people in ovens yet. But many of the policies of the left seem to be in correlation with the Nazi party. They want control of ideas. They want control of the media. They want gun control. And they want a socialist state where the government controls and/or regulates every damn thing under the sun.

Democrats and liberals are also very much against the electoral college. They are so against it that the state of Maryland and Hawaii are passing legislation that will go into effect when enough states pass the law. Last year California passed it but Arnold vetoed it. Basically what the Dems are trying to do is get enough states to equal 270 electoral votes (enough to win the presidency). Those states then vote for the winner of the popular vote even if the opposing candidate wins that state with 100% of the vote. So in other words, the liberal states against the electoral college will try to circumvent the constitution. So far only Hawaii and Maryland has passed it.
Love or hate the electoral college is not the point. It is part of the constitution. If you want to change it, there is a process in place to change it. Instead of going through that process (which requires a huge super-majority), the Democrats and leftists think they have a better chance to go around it with this dumb plan.

Our founding fathers must be rolling in their graves at the kind of god damn BS our politicians have been trying to pull the past few decades. Disgusting. If guys like Thomas Jefferson were alive today, they would be crying for revolution. The government is too big. The political parties are more corrupt than they have ever been. The president and congress dont care about immigration laws or laws regarding international trade. They don't care about the average citizen. In fact, the reason they support all these foreign immigrants is because they think the average American makes too much money. Look at what the corporations are doing all accross the country. They are laying off their highest paid workers in order to re-hire unqualified workers at much lower wages. Sure everyone has a job in America...but the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poor. Wages are in decline while the cost of living is going up. My friend runs a gas station and she said today she fully expects gas to go to $5 a gallon this summer.
This is all just going to get worse and worse unless the people in this country wake up and throw BOTH political parties out of Washington. The politicians in Washington have proven nothing to me that they give a damn about the average person. All they care about is votes and money. And I'm sick of it. I think America is dying, but not from war, foreign policy, or terrorism or anything like that. I think this country is in serious trouble domestically.

When Republicans took over Congress, and a Democrat was President, I paid $1.89 for gas for my car.

When Anencephaly Boy and the Republicans took over 2 branches of the government I now pay $3.69 for a gallon of gas.

I always love people who trash Democrats.  Remember that the next time you have to use 2-3 credit cards to fill your gas tank.

What has changed since 1992 when oil was under $2 a gallon is the mid-east is an absolute mess. And the demand in China is skyrocketting as more and more of their citizens are using cars instead of those bikes they always used to use.

You can gas in baghdad for pennies a gallon. It costs 50 cents a gallon in venezuela. Why? THEY DRILL THEIR OWN OIL! They are bathing in it! In the US, we have oil companies that refuse to build more refineries (because then supply would increase and prices will lower), and the environmentalists won't let us drill our own oil. So instead we pay countless billions of dollars to the Saudis to give us oil. And we become slaves to the oil cartels such as OLPEC and dictators like Hugo Chavez. There are scientists that say there is more oil in Alaska and the Gulf of Mexico than all of the mid-east. If we drill that and a build more refineries, prices for oil in the US would plummit!

I see a definite cause and effect relationship, regardless of whether you do or not.

FCC regulated broadcast is OWNED BY THE PUBLIC. There is no "Free Market" when it comes to The People's Airwaves.

I personally think, though, more damaging is supposed "News" channels broadcasting nothing but "Opinion".

Wanna broadcast Opinion? Fine, knock yourself out. Don't do it on CNN, FNC, MSNBC, etc.

It is most responsible for destroying "Journalism" and substituting "Coverage".

Want "Freedom of the Press"? go buy your own press.

Don't wanna obey the FCC? don't apply for a license.

Of course it doubled. Because that region is where we get oil from. Remember when the Iranians took those British sailors hostage? Did you see what happened to the price of oil? It went up and our stock market went down.
The war put supply in danger. And prices went up.

Plus oil and the war are not the main parts of my post. You support the Dems plan to regulate the radio and the media? You support screwing around with our presidential elections? You support this constant flow of illegal immigrants entering this country and lowering the average wages of Americans?
The point of my post was DOMESTIC policy. There are plenty of threads on here to argue about foreign policy.

No kidding....5 dollars a gallon?  That means my stock will go up.   Good thing I own a hybrid that gets 50 to 55 miles per gallon as well.  [;)]

Am more concerned about the honeybees dying...people have always said the US is troubled...even way back in our founding father's day.  It's definitely nothing new.

Oh...freedom of speech is extremely important in my book.  Though if the 'Fairness Doctrine' ever does pass, Limbaugh and Savage can always share their shows with a 'token' liberal like Hannity does.

You are right.  Gas was $3.49 when those damn Iranians captured British sailors.

Now it is $3.69.

Were our gov to spend as much on alternative energy research as it does war, then the soldiers could stay home and the welfare of the common citizen here would be better off.....lower transportation costs, jobs in support of an oil-free infrastructure and economy, less pollution,  no need to police the world in protection of economic interests, better protection of the borders, and the list goes on. Unfortunately those who make the key decisions for the country are motivated by greed and old-school thinking. Wait till the oil runs out, and it will, hopefully we'd have come to our senses before then, americans are dying every day because we still haven't....

What are you talking about?

You still have not answered my questions. You have concentrated on one single sentence and ignored the rest of my entire post. And you have completely changed the subject (which is typical left-wing behavior). You want to debate oil...then start your own oil thread. If you want to debate whether the media should be free, about the electoral college, or about the domestic economy, then feel free to do it here. But don't hijack threads because you think you can look smarter by debating one sentence.

If someone wants to broadcast on the airwaves I own, in common with every other US citizen, then they should be required to present a broad spectrum of opinions on an issue or offer no opinions at all. If Limbaugh gets to spend 4 hours a day spewing lies and hatred then that station should provide 4 hours for someone else to spend refuting his lies.

The thing is...they do. Just no one wants to listen to liberals. That's why Air America went down in flames. Rush is successful partly because he has a personality and his shows are usually quite optimistic. He includes elements of entertainment in his programming. Liberals on the other hand, at least most of them, come off as being very pessimistic, angry, and talk with an elitist attitude as if they are better than everyone else. It just doesn't come across favorably.
I mean even if you hate Bush, there is a point where the Bush bashing just gets boring. And that is all liberals seem to care about doing in the media. It's hour after hour of Bush bashing. People just eventually gets bored. While people like Rush will jump around many topics.

Radio is ran by corporations which profit from advertisments. When no one listens, the advertisers pull out and the show fails. 50 million people listen to talk radio. If the Democrats push through this law, they can write off 50 million votes in 2010.

   It's called the Law of Unintended Consequences and sometimes I think every Democrat was stoned that day in school.
