Status: offline 		I was sitting back today and thinking about all of the interesting posts I have read on here and how much knowledge that I have gained in my short time on these boards.  Thinking about this made me marvel at the wonders of the internet.  Here safe in my own room I can delve into fantasies of mine that very few people who are close to me would even suspect that I have. I am fairly young (26) and I was wondering if any older members would care to share what the community was like before the advent of the internet.  I highly doubt that without such easy access to “alternative” lifestyle information that I would ever truly know that there was a label for people who like the things that I do.  Hell, I probably would consider myself a freak and weird.  How did doms and dommes meet their subs?  How did word of this underground scene spread? I guess you apply the old saying to me “curiosity killed the cat.”

Status: offline 		I am actually the same age as you, 26, but I was real time before I was online. I grew up in New Orleans so, I suppose, it was probably a bit different from growing up in a small town or even another city. New Orleans is a pretty sexually diverse place, in a dark kind of way, so...a couple of Anne Rice's Coven parties later, I'm at a play party and taking the blinders off.
 
I didn't realize there was an online scene until I was almost 24, I was too busy being involved and in college. I read online erotica and that sort of thing, but chat rooms, IRC, and other forums are still a novelty to me.

Status: offline 		yeah living in New Orleans is a bit different then growing up in the suburbs of Nashville.  hehe I have always wanted to go to an Anne Rice party, I am jealous!!

I did come in backwards as far as the cyber world is concerned.  I had My first slave long before I had My first screen name.  Back then, basically, you were 'brought in' by someone else.  Instead of chat rooms and message boards, you went to clubs or play parties.  You would have some that would come and go, but there was usually certain F/folks that you would see on a regular basis. 
 
I think in comparison to today, it's a lot easier in some respects.  I remember making a lot of mistakes in the beginning, because I didn't know what I was doing compared to a lot of the more seasoned people.  I had to ask every definition.  Learn every technique.  Be shown how to do everything.  I can remember more than a few times that I felt like a complete idiot.  Now, a lot of those things (not all) can be researched by the click of a mouse.
 
Another good part today is, you really don't have to wait for someone to recognize your desire in the lifestyle.  It doesn't take much to find out that there are other people who think and feel the way you do.  Thanks to cyber world, new people come in every day, whether they are in cities or small towns.
 
There's a lot more to say on this subject, but I will leave it to T/those with better writing skills.

I attended the last one. It was awesome!!!! And, I had been to others, but I met some people that night that turned me on to the scene. Very cool way to be introduced...and no offense to any vampires among us, but the vampire thing got to be a little old in the scene. I haven't been involved there in some time, so I don't know if it is still that way...but it was also a younger crowd than I have here in this community. It was like trading one thing for the other...but I learned a lot from both. And, of course, I'm still learning.

The first dungeon I ever visited was in Nashville. And I learned about it in a very "non internet" way. I purchased a flogger at the Tennesee Rennaisance Faire, and someone approached me to ask if it was decorative or functional. I said functional and he asked me to flog him. Other faire goers thought we were part of the faire cast and crew! After reddening the gentleman's back, he told me about the dungeon and I came back the next weekend and got to visit.

Status: offline 		When I was first introduced to the lifestyle I was brought in by a friend who happened to have already been in a large poly group of BDSMers. The extent o the internet access we had on campus was telnet chat rooms (which I found more than my share of lifestyle chatter) and worlds slowest conection to filtered websites. My first sub was actually given to me by my mentor, he was origially hers and he and I got along very well.  She decided that he and I were a better fit than she and he were, and so he was a gift to me for my birthday. He and I were together for nearly a year before I had to leave school and leave him in Boston.
Back in NY, I found out that the lifestyle existed there too. I was so clueless. Funny thing is, once you know where to look, it really wasnt that underground.

Now, well, its just too easy.

From what I understand, they no longer have them. "They" being her fan club. The coven parties took place at the Palace Theater on Canal, but I think there was some sort of legal issue that they just got tired of tangling with. And, I think she is trying to make herself blend in a little better, as well.
 
She was having other legal troubles with Al Copeland (Original owner of Popeyes). They live on the same street and were butting heads about something or other and it got nasty...coincidentally that was the last year a Coven Party was hosted. I think she had just had too much of it.
 
PS. Sorry for the thread hijack. I'm going away now so that this thread can continue in peace and harmony.

Status: offline 		When I was 26, the only way to find others already in the lifestyle was to cruise some of the racier areas around Broadway in San Francisco.

Other than that, we made converts, one at a time...

Status: offline 		For me back in the day as it were...there was nothing. No so-called play-parties (kinky) no munches, no kinky group scenes...nothing. I met my first sub at a pizzeria...my second...her bi roomate and nothing that could be 'proclaimed' on a billboard such as the net. It was all about the connection and a slow steady progression from vanilla to submission to the kinky sexual fetishes and then...if approached correctly...the liberating agonies in the chairty of my pain. We never even spoke of collars or 24/7 live-in slavery. Also, there were no stereotypes or presumptions...there simply couldn't be or either party could be rejected as a boorish fool.

Status: offline 		I don't know what the "scene" was like in the real world, since I grew up in the heart of Ohio Amish Country, lol.  So, I always kept my "urges" to myself, thinking I must be a real whackadoo.

It was when I got my first computer (in 1998, I'm a late starter) that I started taking peeks in BDSM chat rooms (and running out quickly, I was such a twit) but finally stuck around long enough to start learning and meeting a couple of really nice people who gave me suggestions of places to go to learn.

So, had it not been for the internet, I'd still be a whackadoo.

Status: offline 		I've been around almost a decade and I have no idea- I got on through the net and have always used it as a primary vehicle of making connections. 

From what I hear, it was smaller, more guarded, more regimented, and likely had less fat people.

Status: offline 		People met through personals, clubs and bars. They learned about this from other people real time, books and magazines. They got to know people on the phone. There were also other ways of signalling: gay men used to wear a certain color of tie on Thursday on Wall Street, flagging left, right or middle with keys, hanky code, etc.

The Girl Next Door and I started playing around doing BDSM things.
Met other people in the lifestyle through AD&D, Music Scene and a few bars.
Then through computer BBS (pre internet computer days).

Status: offline 		Haha, yea, the Anne Rice/Al Copeland fight has been going on for quite some time. It's unfortunate, that party was so much fun! Fun things to do in New Orleans have all but ground to a halt in the last two years.
