"Affectionate plane passenger convicted"

Thu May 3, 10:41 PM ET

" WILMINGTON, N.C. - A California man who prosecutors said got a little too friendly with his girlfriend during a flight was convicted Thursday of interfering with flight attendants and crew members.

Carl William Persing and his girlfriend were seen "embracing, kissing and acting in a manner that made other passengers uncomfortable" during the September flight from Los Angeles to Raleigh, according to a criminal complaint.

Persing twice threatened a flight attendant who told the couple to stop and refused to serve them alcohol, prosecutors said.
The FBI met the couple when the plane landed in Raleigh.

Persing, 41, will probably serve jail time for the federal felony conviction, Assistant U.S. Attorney John Bowler said. He was convicted after a three-day trial in U.S. District Court in Wilmington.

Defense attorney Deb Newton said her client will appeal.

"He's devastated," Newton said, adding that he was defending his right to be left alone.

Charges against girlfriend Dawn Elizabeth Sewell, who was accused of assisting Persing, were dropped this week. "

These days when you're on an aircraft you should be sitting up straight with your hands folded in your lap.
If this guy was "trying to make a point" he picked a piss-poor place to do it.

I'm sure if his girlfirend were "hotter" the complaints might have been minimized.

Why didn't they just go into a bathroom together if they wanted to join "The Mile-High Club" ?

They're both doing everything short of the wild thing, he's going to prison, she'll be going shopping.

Nice.

Just like the male teachers caught kissing a female student does 6 months to a year...but the female teacher gets a book and a movie deal.

Nice.

Griswold,

The reason for the charges are in the 3rd sentence -

"Persing twice threatened a flight attendant who told the couple to stop and refused to serve them alcohol, prosecutors said."

And Popeye is right, given the security climate at airport and on airplanes he was being very foolish to do such a thing.

I cant help but think- some of this  conviction is to set a precedent- so as same sex partners do not engage in public acts of affection. Being that a heterosexual couple was convicted per the airplane- every airline can pretty much say all acts of public affection are not permitted.

People cringe when they see 2 men kissing.  Frankly I dont care to see it myself.

A breif gesture of public affection, fine.  But lets face it- we all been in situations where we had wished the happy coupple would get a hotel room.....    it ranks up there with publicly talking loudly on a cell phone.  breif- fine. 20  minutes- and it amounts to quiet enjoyment per the otehrs.

oh my God, i saw the couple on tv presenting their problem with the authorities and it was said that they will be triend according to teh Patriot Act, and they may face 20 years behind bars...

but i havent thought they or one of them will be convicted, what the hell is the relation between a man sleeping over his girl's lap and terrorism or anything criminal?!!! How this will hurt the passengers or anyone else on the plane, even if they were making love, this doesnt hurt the surrounding ppl... i mean in a physical way!!

You may well have a point there, I had not thought of it from that angle.

I hear you on that one!  Holding hands and a brief kiss are sweet, no matter the genders, IMO.
But the falling-down-to-the-ground-mondo-tongue-porno-action in public is in bad, bad taste.

when one is on a commercial aircraft- the captain is in charge. at current- look at how they have let ppl set on a plane for hours on end- and they arent allowed to get off of it. so it appears a whole separate set of rules apply.

the public has become more obnoxious. when i worked at the gas station- it seemed that each year- dealing with the public got snottier and snottier. Cuustomers who expect the moon, and believe if they complain enuff they can achieve nervana.

Now that Im retired- I see how todays mostly younger clerks are.  Seems less then 1/2 say "thank you". My dad was always firm on profanity and manners.

At times I feel sorry for the worker as I can guess the company is shorting them of niceties that were once commen.

They coined a phraze- "airplane rage"--  in a store- a bystander can pretty much leave the premises. but on a flight there is no way out.  So a greater degree of civility is necessary.

Working with the public is not fun [anymore]

Oh well. Such is life.

He was not charged with engaging in an act of affection.

He was charged with threatening a flight attendant.
