Yahoo don't need no 3rd stringer like Microsoft. Here's a current job listing: quote:
Research Engineers: Yahoo! Research is looking for research engineers to work alongside our world-class scientists to deliver the next generation of businesses to the company. Engineers at Yahoo! Research have the opportunity to work on a variety of project types, including: rapid prototype and proof-of-concept development, research engineering libraries, tools, and platforms for distributed computing and algorithm evaluation, as well as working as part of a team directly with Yahoo!'s research scientists. The successful candidate will be passionate about software engineering yet able to thrive in a dynamic research environment. In this position you will be working together with our research scientists to develop novel software engineering solutions for problems in information retrieval, machine learning, computational linguistics, matrix and graph algorithms, unsupervised clustering, data mining, human-computer interaction/user experience and microeconomics. Sr. Research Engineer Required Skills/Qualifications * Specific background, experience, skill set and focus on backend systems architecture, building distributed systems and knowledge of working extensively with databases required and highly desirable. * Proficiency in at least one (preferably two) of Java, C++, C#, C and at least one (preferably two) of Perl, PHP, Python, Tcl required. ... With that list of languages, they ain't using no toy like Windows to serve up their gazillions of pages every minute. That's funny, NEITHER DOES GOOGLE. What does Yahoo and Google know about building massively scalable online applications, anyway? MSFT is thrashing about. Their newest best hope would be to get everyone hooked on .Net 3.0, b/c it's incompatible with XP, and requires Vista, a Gig of Memory, and won't run on any Celerons at all. I wonder how Dell's decision to continue selling XP computers will affect that strategy. MSFT, with Vista delivers NOTHING ANYONE NEEDS, or really wants.
