DiaperDude06 -> Diabetes (5/5/2007 6:41:26 PM)

Hi, I am a newbie sub, however I have had type 1 diabetes since I was a 11.  Do any mistress have a problem with subs or is it a non-issue?  I'm really interested in strap-on play.

DianeB269 -> RE: Diabetes (5/5/2007 7:04:17 PM)

I would have no problem with it if I was looking for another sub to train.

Ok, thanks for a response.  If I ever find a mistress, should I tell her first before we do anything?

DianeB269 -> RE: Diabetes (5/5/2007 7:09:41 PM)

Yes, you should be honest and tell her everything about yourself before it's too late.

I wouldn't because I'm diabetic too. The only thing you have to watch is make sure that you eat and check your glucose before you play. Keep some snacks nearby in case your glucose does drop doing play, make sure that your Mistress knows the symptoms!!

You'll bruise and welt easily, make sure toys are kept disinfected properly as we are more prone to infection. Other than that, have fun. [:)]

Thanks Lashra and Diane.  I appreciate the information.  I will definitely bring some glucose tablets and my blood sugar machine with me.

Should be fine if you take reasonable precautions.

You absolutely must tell the domme first though.  It shouldn't factor into whether or not she'll accept you, but it's something she needs to be aware of.   Since you know best how stressful situations affect you, diplomatically educate her what to look out for and what needs you have.

It is important to let someone know about this and for you to have it as under control as you can. Beyond that, the only way it would matter to me would be if you stayed for a meal or we went out to eat.

Thanks everyone!

Hey DiaperDude! i do not have diabetes, but i am a right leg below the knee amputee. i have not had any trouble with telling Dommes of my situation. The Ones that i have come accross do not have an issue with it and Some even asked if They needed to do anything special to deal with my situation. Good luck with your search.

bigbABygentleman -> RE: Diabetes (10/12/2008 6:27:24 PM)

If your A1C is good and your blood sugars are controlled, then you shouldn't have anything to worry about. But, YOU need to be completely honest with anyone you get involved with for your and their safety.

ExKat -> RE: Diabetes (10/12/2008 6:34:17 PM)

  My Master's type 1 also and the only difference it's ever made is that sometimes we stop for delicious glucose tablet breaks and I've started carrying around glucose tablets myself.
  You definitely need to tell the domme beforehand, so she will at least have an idea what happened when she left you tied up for 8 hours and comes back to find you in a diabetic coma. Diabetics also tend to have trouble with circulation, so she'll need to watch out with bondage.
    Look on the bright side-you have an automatic screening tool to screen out dominas with serious emotional problems if they can't handle an itty bitty medical problem of yours.

MsStarlett -> RE: Diabetes (10/13/2008 4:35:43 AM)

Good information.  Thanks.  I've got an On-Line boy who isn't far away.  He's  diabetic.  If he ever gets free to come and see me, I do want to be sure we BOTH look out for his health.  I would have never thought about keeping the snacks around just in case.

Steponme73 -> RE: Diabetes (10/13/2008 12:18:58 PM)

Hey....I am type 2 diabetic insulin dependent.  I have had no problems playing...Like everyone said, let her know and let her know what the symptoms are and what to do if she sees them.
After that....GO FOR IT!!!!!!!!!!!

One thing no one mentioned - diabetics don't heal (usually) as well as someone without. Any breaks in the skin can become problematic.
Also, glucose tabs are great - but what happens if she misses the signs of hypoglycemia and you become unresponsive (or even nearly)? Take a glucose pen or some decorative icing - yeah, the kind for cakes from the grocery store. In a non-responsive person, it can be squirted along the gumline between the bottom teeth and lip where it's absorbed by the mucous membranes. Gives a lil extra safeguard as it is often-times enough to bring consciousness back enough to be able to eat the glucose tabs.
Happy playing!

type 2 here, and all good suggestions here amongst the forumites.  make sure you eat well, take your meds, watch the skin and disinfect everything every time you play.  educating your play partners can avoid any unpleasantness for anyone.  this is supposed to be fun, so as long as everyone's on the same page, there shouldn't be any problems.  i've been known to interrupt things when i needed a snack and it never caused a problem for anyone i was with.  dominants need good blood sugar levels too, lol.  have fun!

Not sure if you're on injections or an insulin pump...I'm on a pump and I do know it took quite a bit of time to figure out basals, etc. for extended periods of play. Also, it can be hard at first to ditinguish between blood sugar-related symptoms and the physical feelings brought on by a scene. As long as she knows that *you* know your body best and that sometimes there needs to be a time out just for checking and reassurance, you should be able to figure it out together.

As a (partially related) aside, sometimes I take my pump off for a while and have to remember not to fall asleep without checking myself out and putting the pump back on. He usually reminds me, though. Some people have Daddy doms, I have a Doctor dom. [:)]
