I just love gadgets and gizmos, but in my line of work a GPS navigation system doo dad would probably come in quite handy.

So I thought I'd ask if any of you have any input, good or bad, on the wide variety of devices they have available?

Is your need just for simple there and back again trips or do you need a system that allows for multiple "waypoints" (stops)?
Do you want it to speak the directions out loud? ( very nice feature )

If you have Verizon (and a capable handset), they have a lovely feature called VZnavigator. You can input an address or cross street it will find where you are and give you directions to where you want to go.If you miss a turn, it will take you back to where you need to go. It also allows you to do a local search for just about anything from restaurants to nightclubs to random stores.I just moved into my area not long ago and it's great.

The really nice thing is it has free updates of the maps every three months, and it is a feature so you can buy it per month (9.99) or per day (2.99).

I was going to suggest Garmin (they have a wide variety of products), but the Verizon service sounds great.

I use a Garmin Legend C with a highly detailed set of maps, which I download as needed. It's a little short on memory (24Mb) if you need several areas loaded for one trip. My primary use of this is for geocaching and finding my way around new cities when I make business trips.

I'd like one that talks to you and has a lot of features such as telling you where to find local restaurants, etc.... because my work has me driving in unfamiliar cities, rural areas, etc....

I own a Garmin Zumo 550. I bought it specifically for motorcycle touring, but it can also be used in a four-wheeled vehicle with the included windshield mount. It boasts lots of features, including being virtually waterproof. It can be syncronized with a Bluetooth phone, sends verbal directions through the headset, has various mapping capabilities, has memory expansion capability, and will play MP3 files through a wired connection or wireless Bluetooth headset. And although it commands a hefty price of $1,000 retail, but I found this one online for $625 delivered to my door.

I bought Liz the Garmin Nuvi 350 for an aniversary present and she LOVES it. It retials for like $800.00 but I bought a factory refurb off of ebay for 400.00. It has the voice prompts including street names and works like a pro.

I love gadgets too.. but I am just too paranoid to have a GPS attached to me. I think I would just end up yelling at it as I drove in circles anyway.

I bought a Navman for a fraction of the price of the high-end Garmins, and it does everything I need it to do. Color maps, voice directions, the whole nine yards.
