I'm totally in awe - check out this video of a truly gender bending performance:

~FR~

That's not gender bending... that's just him singing a beautiful tenor solo in a high range (also known as counter-tenor sometimes)... I want to say two octaves? I can't remember off-hand the normal range for it. I like the way Puccini wrote it better :\ (that is, for a solid tenor).

I'm confused as to how he has that range, it's kinda crazy. If we were in older times I'd say he was a castrato, but I doubt that people actually still do that now. Either way, head-voice of that quality doesn't come easy (or cheap!) so his talent/skill really is admirable.

Either way, I don't like the quality of the voice, and the song just doesn't *sound* good in that range. Then again, I may be biased and have somewhat of a fetish for a nice, low-voiced Calaf. It's a gorgeous ballad.

I have to agree with Simon on this, basically summing it up for him as, "WTF!?"

EDIT:  After watching it again, I think they had to stop him before Simon's head literally exploded.

That being said, however, I think that was one of the finest renditions of Nessun Dorma that I've heard in quite a while.  A shame that the sound system there wasn't quite tuned to handle it at that particular moment it seems.
