Aswad -> RE: Another Domestic Terrorist (7/28/2011 9:24:27 PM)

What's with the terrorism thing? I get being fascinated with the technical details of an attack, the ideologies of a group, or the motives of people involved and so forth. That's essentially history in its nature. But the consistent eye to terrorism seems a bit hard to grasp. Europe has lived with terrorism for ages, and I've rarely heard Brits get into it. There's a disturbing similarity in some posts to the superficiality of interest in icons, just of the opposite connotation. Much like certain Christian sects are inclined to treat the Devil, with an eye to everything that could conceivably be his work. The extension to the witchhunts is obvious, but also done to death in oh-so-many ways, so I'll leave that out. Anyone remember the IRA, Baader-Meinhof, RZ, etc? Refreshing my memory off WP, it would seem that RZ claimed responsibility for some 183 attacks. One would imagine that would have left an indelible stain, and yet I hardly remember them, even with a sort of spiritual successor to them being a political party up here. I will admit to a better recollection of Baader-Meinhof, but not much about them, beyond their far left leanings. One of those two, I think, did an assassination with a shaped charge against an armored car, but I can neither recall which group, nor where it happened, nor who the target was, nor why it was carried out. I do remember watching the Berlin Wall come down, however, and quite vividly. Jihadists account for a handful of attacks per year on average, worldwide. Is anyone going to explain why I would assume that anything other than vague details about 9/11 and Beslan will stay a part of their legacy, except for the immense budget deficit and curtailed freedoms and stained international record that the US established in the course of losing a war with them? And anyone who doesn't remember Beslan is especially encouraged to answer why this case is more worthy of consideration than an average "dude pulls a gun, gets arrested" criminal case. Why so quick to jump at shadows? I continue to hear more about terrorism from US posters that largely have 9/11 to go on than I've written about a one week old event (post count, that is), and instead of analyses, it's FUD. That's more than just losing, and it reminds me of the flinching of a mistreated pet when one makes a sudden movement prior to rehabilitating them. As someone that grew up during the Reagan era, it's hard to watch, as if the country lost its pride and dignity post-9/11. I'm not saying it did, but I get a quite strong impression along those lines when comparing. Going back to GWB Jr., there was an impression of a proud and dignified country electing a moron for inexplicable reasons, then 9/11 occured, then a brief upsurge, then it winked out, leaving the moron. Mind you, I've got a different individual impression, but the "face" of the country? Feels like it was on its knees faster than a crack whore, and about as desperate for a fistful of dollars. Could someone shed some light on the how's and why's of this? (That includes why I am wrong.) Health, al-Aswad. Lexicon: FUD - Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt... worth looking up if it was unfamiliar.
