ARIES83 -> Favourite Whisky? (4/20/2015 5:08:51 PM)

I've been getting a few of these lately.
Any whisky fans have some favourites to recommend for me to try? Or advice for a relatively new whisky drinker?
I tried a whisky a while ago but I forget the name. Whatever it was, it was super smooth but tasted like old socks.[:D]
I'm trying to find a similarly smooth whisky, that doesn't give you foot in mouth disease.

There are two that I really enjoy, but can rarely get.

One is: Michael Collins Irish Whiskey (although I admit that I may be biased on this one)

Another is (interestingly enough) a Welsh Whiskey, Penderyn. I bought one bottle of their first run of production in 2002(?) and immediately made arrangements to buy 24 more. I don't drink whiskey, much. Many of those bottles became gifts to friends and amongst the ones who considered themselves to be "whiskey drinkers", I have NEVER heard a complaint about this one.

Obviously, I recommend BOTH, very highly.

I like the sound of the Michael Collins. I'll try and get a sample next lot. Why do you say you may be biased? Are you Irish? It's not because your name is Michael is it? -_-

If you are Irish. Commiserate with me brother! I too have quadruple E feet and strawberry tinged locks.

DaddySatyr -> RE: Favourite Whisky? (4/20/2015 11:02:00 PM)

I am biased because that is my name; not just my first name.

My full name is Michael Patrick Sean Francis C _ _ _ _ _ _. While that sounds very Irish, it was (partially) by my father's design (I picked "Francis" for a confirmation name). He was half German/Irish and half Cherokee.

However, I did spend a lot of time, growing up in the Irish "part" of my family (as well as the German and the Italian parts; another long story).

I have no ginger locks and no freckles and I DETEST both corned beef and cabbage. How's that for a cross to bear for someone who is part of the clan Callahan from just outside Belfast?

Lovely stuff!

The old man drank Tullamore. It was really good stuff before the distillery was blown up (1981? '82-ish?). That's what we were told. For whatever reason, there was a disruption in the supply around that time. I can't seem to find mention of it, anywhere.

I waited and waited and waited for the new stuff but it wasn't as good as I remembered.

I'm not a fan, but I'm told the Tasmanian Whisky industry is doing rather well.

Might be worth sampling the Sullivan Cove which won the world's best single malt in 2014. Tasmania is new to distillation (banned for 150 years or so), so the emergence of some quality drops was something of a surprise.

ARIES83 -> RE: Favourite Whisky? (4/21/2015 12:05:55 AM)

It's a shame to hear Tullamore Dew isn't as good as it once was... That could apply to almost anything these days. I'll give one a go if I can find it.

@Awareness,
I remember hearing something to that effect on the radio. I like the idea of buying Tasmanian! But reading the description, it sounds like I wouldn't like it... it's on the list though.
What did you mean "banned for 150 years"? what was banned?

Our brat drinks Old Crow. She loves it

I wonder if the blind taste tests done with wines (blindfolded experts couldn't tell the difference between cheap crap and exquisitely-priced brands) would result the same with whiskey.

servantforuse -> RE: Favourite Whisky? (4/21/2015 10:54:42 AM)

I prefer Scotch whiskeys. Most single malts are good but there are a few blended that are also ok. My favorite is Aberlour. Balvenie is also very good. Both are single malts. About $40 per bottle.

MercTech -> RE: Favourite Whisky? (4/21/2015 11:07:55 AM)

Tullamore lost all their aging barrels and it took over a decade to come back up to its former standard.

I prefer Tullamore and get Bushmill's if it isn't available. But, frankly, I drink more rum than whiskey these days.

vivaciousgrace -> RE: Favourite Whisky? (4/21/2015 12:28:31 PM)

Glenfiddich 21 year old Gran Reserva.
Aged in rum casks.
Very very smooth, warm and rich.
Tastes like heaven. :)

also... Jura whisky is entirely responsible for my best friend and I ending up naked on my sofa.
It is lovely whisky and the after effects were pretty fantastic too. You should totally try it!

I too am really a rum drinker.
Diplomatico for preference, if I want a sipping rum.

I get a laugh out of the tasters when they are describing spirits, but I've also seen some people be pretty accurate blindfolded. I haven't found a cheap one yet that's nice tasting and smooth. I'll let you know after I try more Irish whiskys, they are all suppose to be dangerously smooth. Mmmmm.

@MercTech,
Rum is too sickly for my tastes. I'm definitely keen to try Tullamore!

@Vivacious,
I have a sneaking suspicion that Fiddich was the "old sock filtered" one. Some Juras sound good.

Distillation. Banned in the 1830's, repealed in the 1990's.

I live in a rather hot climate and consider rum for mixing in cold drinks.
After sweating like crazy doing yard work; a Cuba Libre or Pina Colada goes down quite well.
I like the strong flavored rums. I usually grab Myers (Jamaican Rum) in the U.S. and Grey Gosling (Bermuda Rum) when in Canada.

And there is something to be said for a classic mint julep... crush fresh mint with simple syrup in a tall glass, add ice, a jigger of whiskey, top with spring water, stir and serve.

I live in an area that swears by Jack Daniels Bourbon. Frankly, to me, Jack Daniels tastes like there is a charcoal briquet in the glass. A good whiskey deserves to be savored neat.
Glenfiddich and Glenlivet are both excellent. But my palate still prefers Tullamore or even Johnny Walker Green Label.

Woodford Reserve ....

Legally, Jack Daniels cannot be called Bourbon...because of the charcoal filtering process...although, in reality, it is a bourbon-type whiskey.
