I think it was meant to be "Furies" which are mythical creatures from Greek mythology

http://www.loggia.com/myth/erinyes.html

But I could be wrong and he meant Furries

Okay, I found the furrie entry in Wikipedia.  I can't spell.  But I still don't understand what furries are.

I think it's when people dress up in costumes that make them look like cats or dogs or squirrels - furry animals, and things like that. I saw a reference to this on an epsiode of the tv show "Law & Order" once. It's a realm of "alternative life-style", I guess. But - I could be wrong...

Furries, as in the mascot type creatures that you can wear as a costume.  Or to be more technical, anthropomorphic part animal part human (got that from a definition somewhere).  Not sure how common it is, but the only one I ever knew into that was far more comfortable bieng herself when she was dressed in a full-body cat costume. *shrug*  Hope that helps

Isn't there some kind of sexual undercurrent to the whole thing too? Or is that Trekkies and Klingons?

There can be a sexual undercurrent for some, for others its just a release (like being sub for service but not sex). I do know that there are conventions for them out here, gotta love Vegas.

Slipstreme noted on the other thread that there was a journal entry on her profile that discussed furries.  I read it and learned something new.  Might be a good place to look.

I know there are a whole bunch of different kinds of furries.

Some have alternate animal "personae" that are actual animals. Some prefer anthropormorphized animals. For some people it's purely...hrm...spiritual? (having a mental connection to a panther for example), for other's is physical in that they enjoy dressing up as said animal. That dressing up can be wearing ears or a tail, or something as complicated as a full fur suit (think mascott). That's only a little bit, too, there are lots more permutations.

Furry?

Furry Info Page

"1.1) What is a furry?

Furry is a word which has probably been asked to do a little
too much work. It has numerous meanings, and it's not particularly
easy to find two people who agree on the precise definition for any of
them. The original two definitions we supplied in the first version of
the FAQ are:

1. an anthropomorphic animal character. i.e. an animal with human
characteristics.

2. a human who relates strongly, in whatever way, to the idea of the
characters outlined in the previous definition. This may involve
anything from a person who simply enjoys viewing furry fanzines or
films, to someone who actually desires to be a 'real' furry, or
believe that they are literally a non-human trapped within a human
form.

But not all ALF regulars are interested in anthropomorphics.
Some are largely unaware of the 'furry fandom,' or are simply
uninterested in it for a variety of reasons. Most of us who created
ALF were 'fans' of one kind or another, and this coloured our view-
point perhaps more than we realised.
So, after much discussion, we'd like to add a third
definition, one that tries to include everyone who has made ALF a
home.

3. a person with an important emotional/spiritual connection with an
animal or animals, real, fictional or symbolic.

We would recommend reading the FAQ for alt.fan.furry, which
provides much more thorough descriptions of and information about
furries in general. This can be found, along with a great deal of
other furry-relayed stuff, at PeterCat's page at

http://www.tigerden.com/infopage/furry/"

Depends on the fur. For me, yes, but the sex is such a small part about my being furry that it can practically be ignored. Ie: yes, I would have sex in a fursuit, but there are a whole lot of other things I would prefer to do in a fursuit, like simply dressing up like Slipstreme (my sabretooth fursona) and pretending I am that character. It is also highly spiritual for me.

There is a similar lifestyle called theriantrophy where said person believes they are the animal, and often includes shifts into that persona, either hieghtend senses, and awareness, ghosts ears/ tails/ body parts, feeling like they change shape, mental shifts into their animal conciousness. Dream shifts and astral shifts are often debated being real shifts, however I believe they are, at least on the astral plane. Dreams can simply be dreams. I have all of them. I found out what I was through vision quest, although I previously thought I was spiritually either a tiger or a wolf. You should see me scene. Then you would know what I am talking about is real. I can not control the feline inside when it decides to come out, and on the bottom of the whip is the easiest way to get it out.

Many furs just like the art. There is a ton of it, G through X rated. Others just like the comradierie. Heck, I'm about to go hang out with furs at Steak and Shake as it is. They are a very friendly warm group of people. Furry is not something to get into if you aren't touchy feely.

For more information, please check my journal. This conversation does not belong on a BDSM forum. Although for information's sake. I think about 75 percent of furs practice some form of BDSM, usually a light form of D/s where the submissive is more a pet than anything. Many are switches. This is probably because most subcultures tend to have a lot of cross over. Yes, pony play, animal play and puppy play tends to be popular among many BDSM furries for obvious reasons.

BTW: Slipstreme is a nonhuman animal, hermaphrodite (I have gender issues). Hir so called furry form was developed so that I could depict Slipstreme doing things that I could not see four legged creatures do, and to be able to roleplay better with other furs, but right down to it, zhi is supposed to be a run of the mill feline.

Perhaps you're thinking tribbles, which if memory serves might also have been furry.  It's been so long!

Please read my rant about the CSI episode on the other furry topic LA linked here.

quote:

They even have their own cons

There are several, the largest USA cons being Anthrocon (formally Confurence) and Further Confusion. This year I did Anthrocon or Bust with my family, and that was such a nice trip.

They also have mini cons that just started out as furmeets, such as Furloween and Midwest Fur Fright, around Halloween, and Mephit Furmeet. Most of the participants of those tend to be locals.

And sometimes campouts, like Feral in Canada. Although campouts seem to be more common among the Theriantrophy community, these events being called "Howls".

A fur convention is the best place to learn about what furry is all about. And yes, most of it is rather G or PG rated. Although sometimes the room parties can be X rated, but it usually depends on whether or not the people know each other well enough. Most of the room parties tend to be kindof tame, can be like a dance party with drinks though.

The average fur is in his mid twenties. And yes, most furs are bisexual and are male unfortunately, as in the Sci Fi fandom.
