Because those men that have to can do the housework and the shopping in about 2 hours flat, feed the dog and amuse the kids and expose feminine organisational ablity for the calamity it is, I think that means we ought to have our way on the position of the toilet seat.

LOL.. after 2 boys, 1 husband and various male lovers.. I have made it quite clear that if the toilet seat is left up, it is a complete sign of disrespect for any woman that may ever enter their lives. Also, I'm the one that uses the main washroom at night, and without my glasses I'm completely blind... I've been known to fall in!

For the record... I think the husband (an ex of many years now) is the ONLY one that wasn't smart enough to learn to keep the lid down. (yes, I've also learned to feel before sitting if the lid is there or not!)

*sigh* for ANOTHER record.. the "boys" have a washroom of their own that they can leave the seat up, down, tapped to the canister, removed.. etc. to their hearts content. (I don't think there is even toilet paper in there?!)

According to one notation I found, seated toilets with drainage systems date back to 2500 BC, though I agree that indoor plumbing has most likely improved since then.

From The Toilet Museum, "...the fact is, nobody knows exactly who invented the toilet, but the general consensus is that it was not Thomas Crapper. While toilets date back to ancient times, the modern toilet can be more accurately traced back to Sir John Harrington, who described a waste disposal system in the Metamorphosis of Ajax in the 16th century. Some accounts of Thomas Crapper's life indicate that he patented the flush toilet in 1861, but Adam Hart-Davis, author of Thunder, Flush and Thomas Crapper, discovered that, while Thomas Crapper filed for a total of six patents, the earliest being filed in 1881, not one of them was for a flush toilet."

Oh, and the above Sir John Harrington is credited with inventing the water closet in 1596.

As a side note, I've always loved the way the French pronouce the abbreviation for "water closet" (doobel-vay-say). It sounds much nicer than to asking, "Où est la toilette?"

There's nothing quite like using the toilet after my Adrian or after my eldest unmentionable.

Its a real adventure - but with few thrills and plenty of spills......

Serves me right for making them put the seat down I guess - they just got to the point where they thought the best way not to leave the seat up, was to not lift the seat in the first place.

I'm wondering if this is a "happy medium" that others can identify with?

I'm also wondering whether Adrian might stay overnight some time soon - I could do with getting hold of his toothbrush.

I live alone so the seat stays up. I really should invest in one of those hi-tech Japanese self cleaning, seat warming, musical toilets with a more sophisticated dashboard than the space shuttle but for now, a cleaner will have to suffice.

I remember when I was student and shared a flat with four other blokes, it became a battle of attrition as to who would crack first and clean the toilet. In those days it didn't matter if the seat was up or down because you couldn't tell. A girlfriend who was a fellow student wanted to use the toilet once and having seen it, asked me to screen her while she had a pee at the end of the garden. Hmm That relationship didn't last long.

Now, thats what I'm talking about! The number of times I've had to hold my peace all night for outright FEAR of getting near some single guy's toilet!

Question - its obviously who will crack first with a group of guys, but why is it that so many single guys wont clean their toilets?

Why?

Easy answer.. just try cleaning your toilet and see where most of the piss is. Who, most often, will have to touch that piss in their preparation for "execution".

Women indeed do sit.. and in the doing we do not spray the seat and the bowel...and the floor and the walls...

Well, in some places I've visited, I've seen this strange bristly thing in a stand next to a toilet, but I thought that was just a large size hair brush for the dog ...

And if there are any smears in the bowl, I always found it entertaining to see if I could remove it with a stream of liquid.

Thank you miss. I knew about Crapper, and have read some of Hart-Davis' book. I didn't know about Sir John (and isn't that an appropriate name?).
