According to one notation I found, seated toilets with drainage systems date back to 2500 BC, though I agree that indoor plumbing has most likely improved since then. 

From The Toilet Museum, "...the fact is, nobody knows exactly who invented the toilet, but the general consensus is that it was not Thomas Crapper. While toilets date back to ancient times, the modern toilet can be more accurately traced back to Sir John Harrington, who described a waste disposal system in the Metamorphosis of Ajax in the 16th century.  Some accounts of Thomas Crapper's life indicate that he patented the flush toilet in 1861, but Adam Hart-Davis, author of Thunder, Flush and Thomas Crapper, discovered that, while Thomas Crapper filed for a total of six patents, the earliest being filed in 1881, not one of them was for a flush toilet."

Oh, and the above Sir John Harrington is credited with inventing the water closet in 1596. 

As a side note, I've always loved the way the French pronouce the abbreviation for "water closet" (doobel-vay-say).  It sounds much nicer than to asking, "Où est la toilette?"


I think I am falling in love with you Treasure.   I collect toilets and outhouses.  I have lighters, real ones, toys (even barbies - that bitch) and all kinds.  I had a reputation in the sewer industry in California.  I even took my exploding outhouse to state conferences to use as a training aide.

My toilet seat automatically closes.   It is called a comfort seat.  Gotta tell you a funny story.   My grandson was 4 when I got it.  He was facinated with it.  He would stand and lift it and watch it go down quietly for hours.  One day I saw him just dancing like crazy.  I asked what was the matter.  He was holding his pee in.  When he couldn't stand it anylonger he went in and lifted the seat and peed away.   After he finished he came out crying.  I asked what was the matter and he said he was trying to pee long enough to make the lid come down while he was still peeing.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh kids and the wonderful things they think up.

My sons were trained not to stand and pee into the toilet.   Their grandmother in Italy taught them to use the Bidea (sp).   LOL

Awww... thank you.     But I really have no special affinity for toilets or any other lavatory facilities.  I'm just proficient in searching the internet. 

I will admit to a familiarity with outhouses; my grandparent's church in the country did not get indoor plumbing until I was nearly in high school.  I can't say the outhouse held any particular charm for me... though it was the last place anyone ever thought to look when playing "hide and seek".   You had to be pretty bold to brave the stench and dark and wasps in order to hide there.

ROFLMAO    You should visit the giant toilet bowl (wastewater treatment plant) in your area.  They love showing off what they do, You will learn tons, and it is really interesting.  The microbiology that is involved, the different methods of disposal of both the water and the solids, the process itself.  In some areas, the water is even recycled into drinking water (a very expensive process).

Operators have to have licenses and in some places they are required to have cerrtain classses in college.   If you ever get a chance to go to a state conference (and I really recommend it) then watch the Operations Challenge.  Operators are required to compete in 5 events - Process Control (which is a laboratory event), maintenance, collections (that is what they call it when the sewage is going through the pipes to the treatment plant), Safety and I forgot what the other one was.  I was a judge 4 times in the Safety event and that is the one that is open to the public for the state event in Cali.

Tons of fun.   BTW  My office was in the same building where the sewage came out of the ground to be processed  LOL   All 72 million Gallons a day.

Status: offline 		Here is something men should think about,  if you get into the habit of ensuring the toilet seat is down each time finish your work (seat down lid up) then if you ever come home and the seat is up You would know another male has been in your domain!!!!

fyi it works for me the seat is always down

Status: offline 		In my house females out number the males, so seat down!  When I was married my husband learned early on with evil spawns it is best to leave the seat down after he was done or HE had to fish said wet spawn out of the water!! lol

Status: offline 		Down and in my house that is the way it is kept. If it has to be put up it tell's me someone has rotten aim and should perhaps should go back to peepee 101.

My sub usually goes to the bathroom sitting down,he prefers it anyway so its not an issue for us.

I can't imagine voluntarily spending ten minutes with a woman too stupid to keep her own rear end out of a toilet without the cooperative assistance of every man and boy who visits the house.

As much as I enjoyed the OP and some of the responses, what I'm curious about is whether anyone engaged in any sort of power exchange relationship has ever had to give this issue a moment's serious thought, let alone discussion.

Status: offline 		They have had a female urinal out for years.   The one's that impressed me looked like a suction cup attached to a vacuum hose.  The women would cover the cup with paper, apply and pee.  Flushing after peeing was optional   oh that is the case for the guys too.   LOL

Heck, Noah .... I've never given it any serious thought, much less discussion!

But it's been one of those tiny "nicks" on my imagination for a long time, because I've seen women use the argument for years.

Of course, I could have simply said what Kedicat did .... but where's the fun in that?

I thought it might be a good counterpoint to all the male vs female superiority stuff that was going on in the "male warrier effect" thread.

Seems to have worked.

Yes it did work and it was a nice antidote to some of the other stuff going on. So thanks for giving it some humorous thought for us and inspiring a fun little discussion.
