I saw The Queen for the second time last night and really enjoyed it. I'm wondering what other folks thought of it. It struck me as a rare achievement for a movie to be so gripping without any sex, violence, or suspense.

Seeing the movie, I've been puzzling afresh over the eruption of grief that followed Diana's death. It seemed so un-British, and I'm still a bit unsure as to what it was all about. Why did people feel such an incredible connection to someone they'd never met? Was it the glamour, the drama, the good works? Or something else entirely?

I'm also struck by what an incredibly royalist instinct it was for the people to want their queen to mourn with them. Far from being irrelevant, the queen obviously mattered to a lot of people. It's a pity no one in the royal establishment grasped that, or they might have responded more effectively. That's assuming, of course, that coming to London and making a speech was indeed the right thing to do. Should the queen have continued to hang tough at any cost?

The movie did a good job of stressing the papers' role in stirring up the people's anger at the monarchy. Was that, I wonder, a way of diverting rage from the press's own role in Diana's death? Or were they just trying to sell newspapers? Or simply reporting?

It would be fascinating to know how accurate the movie is. Does it come anywhere close to approximating the queen's conversations with Tony Blair or her family? We'll never know, but it's an intriguing question.

I assume the queen will never see the movie, though I can't help thinking part of her must want to. Maybe a discreet showing at Balmoral far away from reporters' eyes. I wonder what she'd think of it. Had a lovely daydream about her inviting Helen Mirren to tea to discuss what the movie got right and got wrong. I would think it would be an oddly intimate experience to meet a person who'd put all that effort into portraying oneself.

Well, enough rambling. I'm curious to hear what others thought of the movie.

I havent seen the movie nor do i have any itention of doing so.

Why did people feel such an incredible connection to someone they'd never met?
Probably the same reasons they feel close to any famous person.
Was it the glamour, the drama, the good works?
Glamour - yes, she was definately that. Drama - yes, we love gossip about anyone. Good works - yeah that too but mainly the former two i think.
Or something else entirely?
No a mixture of the above.

I'm also struck by what an incredibly royalist instinct it was for the people to want their queen to mourn with them.
Actually i think it was disgust at the Queens reaction to Dianas death that caused what you see as an royalist instinct. The queen did not even bow her head as the coffin passed her, a total show of disrespect.

The movie did a good job of stressing the papers' role in stirring up the people's anger at the monarchy. Was that, I wonder, a way of diverting rage from the press's own role in Diana's death? Or were they just trying to sell newspapers? Or simply reporting?
Plain and simple showbiz gossip.

I'm pretty sure she did, actually. It even made the news over here.

When it happened it was on every tele station for days. You couldn't get away from the thing. Our local pubs must have done their best bit of business on record as everyone in our village went to the pub to avoid the tele because it was boring and no one cared about the snobs and their problems. The pubs were chocker all weekend.

It may have been a huge thing in the media but I don't know a single person who gave a flying one whether she was dead or alive.

I do know that buses were put on from around the country to sign a book of condolences. I just can't understand why someone would want to get on a bus to london and back to sign a book for a person they've never met. Strange if you ask me but I suppose it takes all sorts. Personally, I would put it down to media driven drama - they sensationalise, people follow.

In terms of the film, I've no real opinion on that.

We missed a trick there. We could have opened the coffin squeezed all the royals in and buried the lot of them under the ground. Oh well, there's always next time......how old is the Greek one who keeps putting his foot in it with his "do you still throw spears over there?" lines? We'll do it when he kharks it.

Despite my bizarre (for an American liberal) fondness for Her Majesty, it has occured to me that laying the monarchy to rest when the old girl goes may not be the worst idea.

Well, there are times when it would be handy to have a nonpolitical national symbol. Our presidents are so politicized that one seldom feels they represent the nation as a whole.
