JerseyKrissi72 -> Any Ideas What This May Be??? help. (5/10/2007 6:40:14 PM)

Since everyone asks "me" I am going to ask all of you...It's more of a medical question but I post mostly here so I throw this question out to you all....I do NOT have high blood pressure, as a matter of fact mine runs 90/60- 100/70 which is considered normal/ low...yes, I am diabetic but my sugar runs between 100-150 most times and under control..I do have hypothyroidism but I take my medication every day ..I do take Effexor XR for my depression but no other medications. Now, that I said all of that...whenever I am outside in the heat or even working inside in the air conditioner I get very flushed in my face- it looks to many people like I'm gonna pass out it's that red in my face but I feel great- just a very dark red color to my cheeks ....is flushing of the face normal? My doctor told me not to worry because all of my blood work is normal and I'm in decent  health..just very curious. It only happens when I am over heated/ working- never when I am sitting or relaxed. I was thinking at first because I lost an ovary maybe it could be something to do with that, just not sure...any ideas? thanks.

Happens to people in my family all the time. I have noticed, it happens mostly to those of fair skin. Just means your overheated a bit and need to cool down. I've never heard of anything bad happening, but one never knows for sure.

[:(]I can't believe I'll be 35 this year (september)...hot flashes? does that mean I'm getting old? I had my thyroid levels checked about a month ago...all good there.

My daughter is 6 and she gets very flushed when heated, in the sun for even a few minutes, or very physically active for more than a few minutes (though she can usually dance in the a/c for an hour without any flushing).  She is very fair, and when she gets flushed it will last for hours.  The doctors I have asked have offered no help, except to say that she is healthy and suffers no ill effects from it.

I think her thermostat is just ultra-sensitive.  I make sure that she cools off periodically when in any of the above situations.  I think our bodies give signals for a reason and the signals must indicate something, even something as simple as a way to ventilate.

My brother's girlfreind has that happen as well. For her, it not only occurs when
she gets all worked up physically, but emotionally as well.  She said when it does
happen she feels very self-conscious, which causes it to get even worse.  Her Dr. explained that it is just the way her body reacts/copes with stressful situations (physical and psychological) . His first reaction was to check her blood pressure but when all was normal, he recommended she take a yoga class and learn a few relaxation techniques.

Good luck,
ryssa

edited to say..sorry that was meant in reply to JerseyKrissi72

If I remember correctly from the crisis unit we had several clients with similar reactions to their anti-depressants.  I would say it is likely the Effexor.  I'm by no means a medical doctor so you may want to ask your own doctor or read that little mini medical manual that comes in the pill box to see if it is a known side effect.

Hello, Krissi,

I took a look at drug stuff on-line
http://www.drugs.com/cdi/effexor-xr-extended-release-capsules.html

this is what I found:
"Possible side effects of Effexor XR Extended-Release Capsules:
All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:

Abnormal dreams; blurred vision; changes in taste; constipation; decreased sexual desire or ability; dizziness; drowsiness; dry mouth; flushing; headache; increased sweating; loss of appetite; nausea; nervousness; stomach upset; trouble sleeping; vomiting; weakness; weight loss; yawning."

I hope that at least starts to give some answers.  Your doctor is probably the best source of information in the long run.  None of us, even those who are physicians, can do as well as your doctor can, because we who write here do not have your whole case, file, and history like your doctor does.

Cha Ching, nice job Craftsman.  Nevermind you don't need to read the little side effects list afterall. But yes, I still recommend asking your doctor as well.

I'd recommend talking to your pharmacist also.  They should have all of your medications within their database and should be more knowledgeable about any side effects and/or drug interactions.

Fuck the flush...I'd be scouring the Country looking for my ovary.

KatyLied -> RE: Any Ideas What This May Be??? help. (5/11/2007 5:00:03 AM)

Flushing is common with Effexor.  Actually you should take some time and read up on Effexor.
Google "effexor withdrawal".
I was upset when my mom's doc put her on it for hotflashes because so many people have trouble when they go off it.  She is now on a different medication.

JerseyKrissi72 -> RE: Any Ideas What This May Be??? help. (5/11/2007 6:25:33 AM)

When I see my doctor next I am planning to change medications but have heard horror stories about Effexor withdrawals..I tried going off the medication once when I was only on 75mg a day once a day and I had horrible headaches and nightmares like you can't imagine...Ever since I was a kid, however, I would flush like this...omg..you should see me when I am feeling especially shy- I light up like a tomato[&:]~ i'm not a good liar, all you have to do is wait to see my face light up....then i'm caught in a lie.

KatyLied -> RE: Any Ideas What This May Be??? help. (5/11/2007 6:44:14 AM)

I would suggest that you ask your doctor about weaning you off slowly.  People sometimes get flu-like symptoms that last for days when they try to stop, even when they wean off it slowly.  Either way, forewarned is forearmed.

jayded34 -> RE: Any Ideas What This May Be??? help. (5/12/2007 9:03:07 AM)

i to flush like this with activity or with embarrassment or stress.......my ears turn bright red and i break out in a sweat. Has nothing to do with hot flashes or medications *though that is a possibility*  or hormones. Its just my release valve according to my doctor. I have normal blood pressure *most days* also. Check with your doc about possible side effects of the medications you are on......pharmicist will help too.

tatangel -> RE: Any Ideas What This May Be??? help. (5/12/2007 12:19:11 PM)

I have had this all my life. Even in resting I tend to look like I am wearing blush, but it gets particularily bad if I am upset/ physically active. If I really bothers you, look for the makeup with a green base. That will help diffuse the redness. I can not remember the name offhand, but they carry it everywhere. I hope this helps. Also, keeping your skin hydrated by drinking plenty of water tends to lessen the effents, as does a good lotion. Good luck!

HydroMaster -> RE: Any Ideas What This May Be??? help. (5/12/2007 6:19:12 PM)

As it is the extended release version you may not have as intense withdrawl symptoms as the regular.  With the XR your body is used to lower dosages released over time instead of a larger dose released in a short time.  So technically your body is coming off of a lighter dose than regular Effexor, so less withdrawl.

Krissi they will wean you off of the Effexor if they move you to another medication and ramp you up on that.  Email me on the other side if you have any questions as i recently went through it.  i also always read the side effects on the meds i am given even though that drives my father who is a doctor crazy lmao.
