When I see my doctor next I am planning to change medications but have heard horror stories about Effexor withdrawals..I tried going off the medication once when I was only on 75mg a day once a day and I had horrible headaches and nightmares like you can't imagine...Ever since I was a kid, however, I would flush like this...omg..you should see me when I am feeling especially shy- I light up like a tomato[&:]~ i'm not a good liar, all you have to do is wait to see my face light up....then i'm caught in a lie.

Hello JerseyKrissi72. I'm no expert but had to research the drug because it was wrongly prescribed to my wife for 'baby blues' (she did not have the full blown syndrom! no PPS!).

YOU CANNOT 'cold turkey' effexor, or wean progressively, you need a couple of weeks (depending of your level of prescription) or so on prozac or similar medication which then 'can' be quit progressively afterwards. The secondary effects you have are yummy in comparaison to some horror stories you will find in the proper 'anti-depressant forums'. Effexor is poison and good medication at the same time like all heavy duty meds (kind of like BDSM isn't?). Just google effexor and get your information from the horses mouth. RL.

PS: If you go to company sites for information, they water down the secondary effects stuff...

i think any physician who has put someone on this drug (effexor) knows they have to be weaned off of it.

i have been taking effexor xr for about 7 years now, and haven't experienced any problems with it.  As for weaning off of it, it can be done, my best ffriend used it for several months after her husbamd killed himself, and they simply put her on the lower doses...toook her about 2 weeks to get off of it.  Myself, the only time i notice problems is when i don't take it...i tend to forget about it on my days off, since the stressors of work aren't there, and i know i've done so when i get vertigo symptoms.  This usually occurs after 3 days of missing them.

As far as hot flashes, well, i get them now, but don't know why.....i've literally sweated thru 4 sets of sheets in one night, and that's with my a/c on.  The hormones are fine, didn't have any new meds, i just figure it's all a part of getting older.  It's just a pain in the ass right now, so i've learned to deal with it.
