I know all sorts of useless trivia. If only there was a job in that! I just wonder if being on tv would shut me down-going brain dead on Jeopardy would suck.

How did you find out about this Jeopardy audition?

Vendaval -> RE: Studying for "Jeopardy!" (5/11/2007 11:13:17 PM)

OK now, dc, what are you going to wear if you go on the air?
Do tell now!

griswolod, unless you are playing golf, then low score wins.

spankmepink11 -> RE: Studying for "Jeopardy!" (5/12/2007 6:52:35 AM)

DCnovice...how wonderful, hope you get the call back.   I agree with UtopianRangers suggestion, you may also want to peruse the guiness records books that  come out each year....Trivial  Pursuit cards are a good study also, as some have suggested.

Best of luck...

Mercnbeth -> RE: Studying for "Jeopardy!" (5/12/2007 7:22:14 AM)

Back in NYC I knew someone who appeared. She 'trained' too and was very well prepared with daily trivial pursue games and "tests" people would bring her. The thing she said that she didn't consider and should have, was her reaction time. She had problems with the buzz in button. Apparently you can't buzz in until after Alex reads the question, then a light comes up around the board. If you read it and buzz in sooner, you get locked out for a 1/2 second. This was at least 10 years ago. I wonder if it still works that way?

Good luck! When Alex talks to you make sure you mention CM! (lol)

ElectraGlide -> RE: Studying for "Jeopardy!" (5/12/2007 8:49:45 AM)

Alex, BDSM for 200 dollars please.

MellowSir -> RE: Studying for "Jeopardy!" (5/12/2007 8:59:14 AM)

I'll take whips and ropes for 500

Vendaval -> RE: Studying for "Jeopardy!" (5/12/2007 11:27:01 AM)

"Pain and torment" for $1,000, Alex!

We tend to remember things we care about.  If you don't give a rip about sports and pop culture, cramming on back issues of "People" might do more harm than good.  Find a venue on this great wide internet where the topics are discussed from your point of view.  Look for places where they despise, oh, let's say Paris Hilton, as much as you do, and read the posts critical of the whole culture.  Find comedians who take it on, or even start reading the Jay Leno monologues.  If you want 'just the facts,' spend an afternoon reading just the people section of USA Today or a preferred local paper.

Great ideas, Rich. Many thanks!

A friend at work told me that Jeopardy! was doing one of its periodic online tests. I took it and was pretty sure I'd flunked. Several weeks later, to my surprise, I got an e-mail inviting me to come to an audition here in D.C.

This actually has me somewhat worried. My job allows for casual clothes, so my wardrobe is pretty relaxed, and I generally look like an unmade bed. For the audition, I wore gray slacks, a plaid button-down shirt, and a sweater vest. Most of the other men, I was a little disconcerted to find, wore ties and jackets. If I actually do get on the show, I'll need to do some quick wardrobe boosting, I think.

I hadn't thought of them. Thanks!

We practiced with buzzer-like things, and it does indeed seem tricky. They suggested practicing when we watch the show.

You know, I have been a bit worried about not having enough interesting stories for the interview segments, so maybe I will! [:)]

I’m sorry folks, but I can’t resist...

dum dum dum dum DUM dum dum...

"Welcome back to Jeopardy. I’m your host, Alex Trebek. Let’s meet our contestants. First up, we have dcnovice for Washington DC. It says here you’re into obedience training. Do you raise dogs for a living?"

"No Alex, I want to be trained to be obedient, by a beautiful woman."
(Uncomfortable silence from Alex, the other two contestants, and the audience)

Seriously. Good luck. And if you do make it one, you absolutely have to let us know when the air date is.

Edited to correct grammer goof

Do spend the money on a nice suit and get an extra shirt in case
you sweat too much under the studio lights.

Things to avoid if you are going on camera -

Horizontal stripes, chroma key blue (interferes with adjusting
the camera's color controls), strong patterns or anything garish

Ask the assistant director and/or stage manager for guidance.

Get a hair cut and maybe have the barber shave you too.
Wear deodorant but not strong cologne or after shave
as you will be perspiring under the lights.
Bring along a pocket sized tooth brush and tooth paste
and a comb for sure, they will fit neatly into your pocket.
Don't do anything major to your face, like applying self-tanning
lotion or getting a facial right before you are going to the studio.

Especially the woman part...I think I'm going to have to do another investigation into revoking your gay card DC.

Along with the Guiness book there are other trivia books as well. go to your local Barnes & Noble and look for them in the front section where the clearance books are. I did find some sites as well.

Hope they help! Of course there is also Jeopardy! available on it's website as well.

Shanghaid -> RE: Studying for "Jeopardy!" (5/13/2007 2:14:58 AM)

Hey DC congrats! That's my favorite show - that I can only occasionally view by satellite in the early morning now :-/

> know what teams are located in what cities.

Also pay particular attention to teams that have *shifted* cities. I've seen a coupla questions like that.

You're getting great advice from everyone on how to train.

Vedeval gave fantastic advice if you want to look your best. I'd add this, Vedeval's advice is very, VERY knowledgeable about how to look your best on camera. This however, is Jeopardy, not America's Top Model.

The folks on the show are, for the most part NOT dressed-to-kill. Most important to you - to help you WIN is, dress in something that is comfortable for you. Don't buy a new suit if it will put you less at ease.

You need to be at the top of your game. Wear lucky socks & a comfortable shirt. You'll be standing, so wear comfortable shoes too. Dress so that you feel comfortable and confident. If you are comfortable in a suit & tie, go nuts. Alex will still be the best-dressed onstage.

Best of luck!

SH'd
