Dusted off this thread to give a long-overdue update.

Long after I'd given up hope, Jeopardy! did call, and I went to LA last week for a taping. due to a tie, they needed one less challenger than expected, and I drew the short straw. I think they plan to invite me back in April, but haven't gotten the official word yet.

Meantime, I definitely need to work on my buzzer technique. Also need to implement some of the great suggestions in this thread.

Many thanks for the encouragement, folks!

Well congrats for getting called up and going. I have often wanted to go.. but I didnt feel that I would know enough or be fast enough on the buzzer.

Work on the buzzer and you should be golden.

Good luck!

LOL!

Sinergy makes a good point. It is (mostly) about the entertainment.

Alex only got annoyed with that guy who won too long. I think we were all conflicted about him. Part of us wanted to keep on wishing him well with his extraordinary knowledge, while our inner shadenfreuden demon was cheering for him to fail.

SH'd

I thought Alex was gonna have someone shoot him there after a bit when he was winning forever.. I always cheered him on.. mainly because he is billiant.

First, major congratulations to you, dc!

:::gingerly dipping toe in the water::: At the risk of sounding like a total moron, the first thing that popped into my (empty?) head was...remember in the movie "White Men Can't Jump" where the character played by Rosie What's-Her-Name has a book because she's going to get on Jeopardy! and win big? Is there really a book like that? If so, maybe look to buy it. If not...well, I'm sure I just gave the CMChat crowd a good hoot.

Okay, I'm not a complete moron. There is such a book. (Whew!)

Friends ---

I went for a Jeopardy! audition yesterday, and I think it went well. Of course, it's still a one-in-six (or more) chance that they'll actually invite me to play.

Just in case, though, I figured I should bone up on my two weak points: sports and popular culture. Problem is, I'm not quite sure how. I've gathered the rest of my collection of trivial facts magpie style, plucking here and there over the years. I'm not sure how quite how to do it systematically.

So . . . any advice for techniques or resources for getting up to speed on sports and popular culture?

Thanks,

DC

DC, I'm here to help;

I don't know shit about popular culture but...I can help you with sports.

Sports:

No matter what, one team always wins. Ergo, the other team loses.

It's the same every single time.

(Hope that was of some help).

I'm here M-F, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Pacific.

Ohhhhhh...
I was there, to match my intellect, on national TV,
Against a plumber, and an architect, both with a Ph.D.
I was tense, I was nervous,
I guess it just wasn't my night.
Art Fleming gave the answers,
Oh, but I couldn't get the questions right-ight-ight

I lost on Jeopardy,
Baby,
(Oooh.)
I lost on Jeopardy,
Baby,
(Oooh.)

Well I knew I was in trouble now,
My hope of winning sank,
'Cause I got the Daily Double now,
And then my mind went blank.
I took Potpourri for one hundred,
And then my head started to spin.
Well, I'm givin' up. Don Pardo,
Just tell me now what I didn't win,
Yeah, yeah.

I lost on Jeopardy,
Baby,
[I Lost On Jeopardy lyrics on http://www.metrolyrics.com]

(Oooh.)
I lost on Jeopardy,
Baby,
(Oooh.)

That's right Al--you lost! And let me tell what you didn't win: a twenty-
volume set of the Encyclopedia International, a case of Turtle Wax, and a
year's supply of Rice-a-Roni, the San Francisco treat. But that's not all!
You also made yourself look like a jerk in front of millions of people! And
you brought shame and disgrace on your family name for generations to come!
You don't get to come back tomorrow! You don't even get a lousy copy of your
home game! You're a complete loser!!

Don't know what I was thinkin' of,
I guess I just wasn't too bright.
Well, I sure hope I do better
Next weekend on The Price Is Right-ight-ight

I lost on Jeopardy,
Baby,
(Oooh.)
I lost on Jeopardy,
Baby,
(Oooh.)
I lost on Jeopardy,
Baby...

Well, I had my moment in the Jeopardy! sun, and it was a blast.

You can see the results on July 14th.
