Yes, there is still a belief in Purgatory. No one can say what it's origins are really because there is no mention of it in scripture. It did not become part of the official dogma of the Church until the 16th century under Pope Gregory the Great. Many believe that it was indeed made up as a way to garner revenue for the church.

"I am roman catholic and my domme friend is greek orthodox, so basically christian.  Does bdsm mean we are going to hell? or are we good? "

It doesn't matter what you are or what you do, hell is a mythological concept you can no more reach than heaven. Don't live with fear and ignorance, work to overcome them. That is the only way to avoid hell.

"yes jesus was sent here to die for our sins, but by that logic you are saying that serial murderes such as ted bundy go to heaven "

The deathbed confession is a popular choice for that religion, do whatever you like and simply ask for forgiveness. So yes, in christian mythology it does not matter what you do on Earth, only that you accept god when you die. If the Ted Bundys of the world repented and accepted god, then they would get into heaven (if it existed). And what would happen to the good people from different cultures who didn't accept god? You guessed it, they go straight to hell. Religions don't care about good behaviour, and quite often are excuses against good behaviour. Religions generally focus on similarities. Live the same, think the same, worship the same and destroy that which is different.
Oh, while we are talking about killers, read up on the old testament. Peace and love might make Jesus happy, but his old man likes death and lots of it.
And if Jesus died for our sins, we can't let that sacrifice be for nothing, go forth and sin to make his death meaningful.

"Bingo. In this context it is the intent and not the action that brings about the sin."

Because we make up the religions, we can also make up how they work at any time for any example. It's why we can have thou shalt not kill and kill all gods enemies in the same religious text. Basically if you are happy doing something, and the church isn't going to burn you for it, then it's fine, your gods love you and your into whatever afterlife you've chosen to believe in. Though chosen to believe in is usually giving far to much credit to the religious follower, most simply follow what they were born into with absolutely no thought or analysis.

"into a flame war about how Christianity sucks and those who are religious are stupid."

Replace christianity with religion and it's a history lesson, not flaming.

mercmjm, if you really are worried about this, then the best thing for you to do is forget about your religion for a while, and take a good look at religion throughout history. When you look at all the stupid practices and rituals throughout time, take the feelings you have and apply them to your own rituals and practices. Once you put your mythology in it's proper context, it should cease to have any power over you. If you are scared of hell and god, then you should be scared of vampires, morlocks, klingons, cyclops, and every imaginary thing humanity has come up with. They are all as real as each other, no matter what ones you were raised with. Did it matter to Santa if you were bad or good, or only what your parents knew about?

South Park is as correct as any religion. God is a bunyip buddist, we are all going to hell, and the Mormons were right and get to go to heaven.

Another way to earn a get out of hell free card is to avoid menopausal slaves. ~growling today~

Actually, the current Pope declared there is no Purgatory. It happened last week, I think. So, there is a Heaven, but no 'penalty box'. What you do on earth is what sets your destination.

Hello mistoferin. Spoken like a non catholic! Catholics 'believe' it dates from the apostles as many references to purification after death (no direct ticket) transpire from scripture. Historical references of a more definite 'purgatory' date from the second and third century depending on your favourite non catholic historian. Protestants reject this 'purification phase' as it is not explicitely 'written' in the Bible.

For the Catholic Church, Heaven, Purgatory and Hell are not places, they are a 'state of being' after death. Damnation is a state of not being with God (Hell), Purgatory is a state of Purification until attaining Purity in the Light of God (HEAVEN!!!). I think the prayers for the dead of Christian followers with the apostles demonstrate (rituals) a basis for the belief of purification 'after' death. They believed (and catholics still do) that prayers for the dead helped speed up the processing (interceding of Saints even better!).

Representations of the 'instances' heaven-purgatory-hell as 'places' come mainly from the greco-roman mythology. Catholic 'Artists' are responsable for the 'physical' representations which are allegories and not digital photos! Ok? (For the romans, hell was a place and they could tell you exactly were the gates were!)

Good news for the Protestant BDSMs, if you have the faith you go to Heaven, that's all. For Catholics (a very masochistic religion), no no no, it is not enough!!!. You have to do good deeds also, not only believe in the faith, 'do' the friggin faith! That is why catholic BDSMs are going to hell. At least we wont see Bush there, maybe you guys in heaven could do a little ass play with the guy? You protestant can do that as it is not explicitely 'written' not to in the Bible (BDSM in Protestant Heaven). All in good fun, RL.

Hello, Eldritchdancer. I live in a catholic province of a catholic country, my wife comes from a catholic south-american country and we did not get the memo...

'What you do.......sets your destination'?. True for catholics, for protestants it is debatable. From what I know of protestant dogma, all that is required to go to heaven is having the faith. Push this to extreme, killers, rapists and all around fuckups (politicians) can get in on faith alone (or if Jesus 'talks' to them...). As for the penalty box? nope it's more akin to a carwash. RL.

Whew......... I sure am glad that I don't have to worry about heaven or hell-- I'm Pagan.  I believe we make our own hell right here in this lifetime anyway.

WHAT????????? I demand my money back!!!!!!! Do you have any idea how many of those candles I've lit?

Wait Wait Im confused .... I lit lots of candles, even called Master, Lord  and screamed Oh God a few times... and  i still cant get into heaven ?

ICGsteve -> RE: bdsm and religion (5/11/2007 11:06:11 PM)

UMM, the old testament in particular has God as the Dom and man as the sub. If  God is going to play BDSM games, and we are made in his image, then it is going to shock God or be a problem to God that we play BDSM too. Nooooo. If this is going to be a problem when I get to heaven then God has a boat load of explaining to do!

curiousexplorer -> RE: bdsm and religion (5/11/2007 11:32:56 PM)

ICGsteve,
What happened to sane, safe and consensual? I don't think old testament god played by those rules.

ICGsteve -> RE: bdsm and religion (5/11/2007 11:36:35 PM)

SSC is nonsense so far as I can tell. It is rationalization for doing what we want to do in BDSM, other than that it serves no purpose.

WorldTraveller7 -> RE: bdsm and religion (5/12/2007 1:08:13 AM)

I am not christian and am anyway more spiritual than religious but this is a cool topic. On a social front it pretty much comes to the same platform as interracial but its the afterlife concept of heaven which puts a twist.

I happen to feel that hell and heaven are both here, based on our actions. So I am open to who so ever I connect with, without regards to religion or ethnicity.
