ORIGINAL: curiousexplorer That is an excellent question. Another excellent question is where did the shooter get their gun? Also will any of the guns purchased with fear now be used for a similar crime in the future? Or how many of these new gun buyers will end up shooting themselves or a family member I really don't want to do the gun thing, Explorer. And yes, the power of a firearm to keep the home safe is as mythical as the conclusions I come to about accident scenes. Of course, the numbers that can easily be linked to or quoted make no mention of the effectiveness of simply working the action of a pump shotgun in the darkness. Come right down to it, all home security can be completely mythical. Guns may be legal, but in a state like California strict adherence to the laws about storing them takes them right out of a crisis equation. Watchdogs can be the most effective security going, but there are plenty that will simply watch. Alarms have to be set, deadbolts and window-bars are no prevention against a ruse entry. Yet people will find comfort in those myths. Perhaps you could explore how some find comfort in placing blame on the system?
