My opinion is that if you use it in a sentence to someone and they understand what you meant by it then it counts as a word.

I make up my own words all the time because until someone elects the official word maker of the world I say it's an open forum LOL.

Hell no it ain't a word.....!!!!!! But I use it all the time... also use gonna, kinda, sorta,etc. I write that way also cause (another one) that's the way I usually talk if comfortable around friends. I also clean it up when that kinda (there it is again) writing or talk isn't appropriate.....just me

While it may be in the dictionary and classified as a word it is one of many that I detest. It just seems.........ignorant.

That being said........I also make up my own words......LeeAnnisms.

Aint aint a word...If someone uses it makes them sound like trash....Now here is a word you can use...."Fremps"...Meaning.....When "you" feel embarassed for the actions of other people...Like when watching a tv show or perhaps in the forums......."Domiguy frempsed after reading the post by Puella where she stated that she wanted KurtKaboom to do her anally."

aint is a word since it is in the dictonary but ..... I remember when it wasn't a word and was told to stop using it ....ie

Aint aint a word because aint aint in the dictonary. ...

just like WWW is now a word for well you should know this

Ain't means isn't and aren't at the same time, but does not discriminate between the two. If a word can be defined like that, it is a word.

It's nonstandard, so therefore it is legally (as that was the question) not a word.

However it is vernacular, and in the rules of culture vernacular beats standardization every single time.

Being from the south, I'm sure I'll get flack on this, but as far as I'm concerned, ain't is an improper contraction between aren't and isn't.

HOWEVER, y'all is a proper contraction, similar to vous, usted, and Sie, and from what I understand, derived from old english. :)

"Ain't" is "isn't", innit?

It's a mutation of a contraction, like "I'm" or "don't" or "he's". In the area I live, "ain't" often comes out sounding like "ent" and I always wonder how a non-native English speaker would ever figure out that "I ent gonna..." means "I am not going to..."

My Chambers 21st century dictionary includes "ain't" so I vote it's now a word, but I would hold out for always including the apostrophe. But language reflects usage rather than rules.

Right. I'm English, so bugger the dictionary or any professor! Ignore the Queen, or any other authority.

Aint, is a word. As are the regional variations used in my area - "ay" and "en"

as in "You are not going to catch fish in the canal"

"Yo ay gunna catch fish in the cut" or "You en gunna catch fish in the cut"

The English that is in the dictionary, and formalised in grammar books and so on, is a recent invention. The same process of standardisation occurred in every European language I can think of. The purpose of the standardisation was to provide an agreed, mutually intelligible form for the language, for use both within the population speaking varieties of it and for the purposes of contacts external to that population in other countries.

Thus, the only artificial or false English, is that to be found in the dictionary, "proper" pronunciations and in the grammar books. It is a contrived form to fulfil its purpose. It does this job well, but it isnt a real form of the language, and its importance for this purpose is lessening as more of us get to hear, through TV and radio etc, how other speakers use English and get used to their pronunciation and word usage, and understand what theyre saying.

Its a living language too, and every year they add new words to the dictionaries to take account of this, dropping older forms no longer in use. If it were meant to be that English was static, then we'd all still be speaking something between German, Dutch and Danish with maybe a few Romano-Welsh bits thrown in.
