ORIGINAL: darkinshadows Oh yes julia - certainly - you can But unlike many US companies, health insurance isnt paid even in high flying positions (well, unless it's corporate) and even if it is, it's basic care - not usually used for routine checks. And in the UK, people do not take out medical insurance in general, and do not take out seperate - I believe that this is just due to people being too reliant on the NHS - and as it stands, the NHS is failing. Cancer patients cannot get the drugs they need, maternity units are over stretched. We have to pay contributions - and people feel entitled to healthcare. But they are let down. The cost of a mammogram in the UK is around £300 (that - I think is over US $600) if paid for privately - even then some private hospitals insist on GP referal first. Peace and Rapture Dark, Basically you are paying double, taxes and supplemental coverage, and still getting poor services that you have to wait longer to receive. Seems to be a standard result when you rely on a government bureaucracy. A 'nanny state' provided universal health coverage will make the health system worse. When beth had to wait 10 days for her test, I called everyone involved including the highest level of the insurance company and my agent. I didn't have much of an impact and didn't get her a appointment any early, but 'venting' helped. When I chatted with them, I always included the question; "If it were your wife would you accept waiting 10 days?" or if it was a woman; "Would you be satisfied with waiting 10 days?" I can't imagine waiting as long as I would have to if we were in the UK. After reading your information, I may just call them to apologize for being so adamant. What fools we be in the US to desire something that makes good health coverage more a function of how rich you are. The fact that more and more big corporations are FOR universal health coverage should be a tip off. Think about it, if union won full coverage is replaced by some form of national health program, they've cut their costs dramatically. Yet - we have naive people believing the government should provide nanny service cradle to grave. Thanks Again for the first hand info!
