LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Rev. Jerry Falwell — founder of the Moral Majority and the face of the religious right in the 1980s — died Tuesday after being found unconscious in his office, a Liberty University executive said.
Ron Godwin, Liberty's executive vice president, said Falwell, 73, had been found unresponsive around 10:45 a.m. and was taken to Lynchburg General Hospital.

Bill and Hillary Clinton will be crushed I'm sure.
I think Falwell donated $100,000 to his re-election campaign.
Now when's Ted Kennedy checking out?
That would be reason for celebration.
"Popeye's Buying!"

And who says all the news is bad?

I just sat and stared at this thread not knowing how to respond. I mean I did not want to be snarky about a dead guy

No-one mourns a Rat.

I'm sure his family would not agree.

I'm not a fan of his, at all, but I wish death on no one.

Remembering A Rat:

After the September 11, 2001, attacks Falwell said on the 700 Club, "I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen.'"

"AIDS is the wrath of a just God against homosexuals."

"I do question the sincerity of people like the Reverend Martin Luther King..."

"I hope to see the day when, as in the early days of our country, we don't have public schools. The churches will have taken them over again and Christians will be running them."

Concerning President George Bush's global terror war, Falwell was an enthusiastic supporter: "Blow them all away in the name of the lord."

He wished death on many; I will not do him the favour of the same.

Maybe some non-consensual edge play would have been more deserved.

Then again, if there is a God, he'll be playing that with Satan by now.

Yours,

benji

The only cause for celebration is that the Fundies are going to be busy dealing with the power vacume.
That said maybe the Christian Right will lose some of it's hold over the Republican Party.

Sanity -> RE: Jerry Falwell dies (5/15/2007 11:16:09 AM)

Didn't him and Tipper Gore try to ban music once or something? I don't quite remember all the facts, but it seems like him and Al Gore had a lot in common. Maybe it's just the way Al gets all preachy about his Global Warming cult, or is there more to it than that?

domiguy -> RE: Jerry Falwell dies (5/15/2007 11:28:58 AM)

Yes Falwell and Gore are the same person...Falwell puts down people and Gore makes the argument that by cutting back emissions we will be helping ourselves....Great analogy.

edited ...can't spell emissions

Thanks domi! I was having trouble connecting the points.

Typical of the far left. Celebrates death. First late term and partial-birth abortion, then physician-assisted suicide, then celebrate the death of those you disagree with.

One, I do not label myself "far left", two you posted that reply to me, three I did not celebrate the death of anyone.

FOUR the most snarky posts on this thread seem to be from those who claim to be conservative

If that's all Gore was about I would agree that with you, but Gore's hypocrisy runs much deeper. Great analogy!

domiguy -> RE: Jerry Falwell dies (5/15/2007 11:35:45 AM)

Typical of the right to come to the defense of someone who spewed hate but was a conservative so everything about him must be ok.....Hates abortion loves the death penalty...Hates abortion but doesn't want to pay for all of these kids or supply them with an education once they have arrived....Am I missing anything?

Ah, here it is, Domiguy - I spent the time looking this up just for you. Now, aren't you just so SPECIAL!!!
quote:

In 1985, Tipper Gore made a name for herself as a crusader against "porn rock." She was a founding member of the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC), a group which emerged overnight on the national media scene. The PMRC’s mission was to clean up the sexually explicit music industry and it led to the September 1985 Senate rock hearing, at which Tipper appeared as a witness. Tipper’s critics accused her of promoting censorship and some referred to her as a "cultural terrorist."
In 1988, Tipper’s husband, Albert Gore Jr., ran for the Democrat presidential nomination. As his campaign kicked off, Tipper released a book, Raising PG Kids in an X-Rated Society, a move many saw as a ploy for the Gores to win over the right wing of the Democrat Party. However, Tipper would change her tune during the campaign. In an October 1987 meeting between the Gores and entertainment luminaries, she claimed the Senate rock hearings were a "mistake." Albert Gore Jr. claimed he "was not in favor of the hearing" when in reality he was on record thanking the Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation chairman for holding the hearing.

Yes Gore lives in a big house.  There is no comparison between Falwell and Gore.
