Status: offline 		according to what i learned while i was out (according to the Geek Squad) i have to have a program called Nero in order to re-burn the disk so that it will boot properly...so i'm going to check the net to see if i can find a freeware or shareware version of Nero in order to re-burn the program

Status: offline 		You don't need Nero to burn an ISO image and make a bootable CD.  Use the app I linked to earlier.  It's much smaller and there's much less opportunity to screw it up by doing the wrong thing since it ONLY burns ISO images.

right, an iso can be an image of the original disk or a stripped down version.  so it can be bootable or not.  if the original disk was bootable then it will boot once properly burned.  If it was stripped and modified it may or not be bootable.  anyway all windows 95 and up install with setup or winnt at the command prompt and any burner software capable of burning an iso standard image will work too.   come on ya all its just not rocket science here LOL

I haven't use a Windows Desktop since Thanksgiving 2001. Haven't noticed anything I needed one for, myself.

Status: offline 		If you're not ready to just reload back to factory + Winders Update, then you're not ready for a hard disk failure, fire, etc.

I know it's a pain in the ass, but that's the way it is sometimes.

The point being that in 5 - 1/2 use of COMMERCIAL AND RESIDENTIAL USE, I haven't found anything on Windows requiring it.

Your argument is: "It doesn't run Windows software", and my response is "So what? There isn't any Windows Software compelling enough to justify that stance. "

Go into the bios on the computer and change the option from Boot Order:  Hard Drive, CD (or vice versa) to only boot from CD.

I suspect what will happen is that the system will tell you there is no boot file burned onto the CD you copied.

If this is the case, start over.  Create a bootable CD (like you would be doing a backup copy of your system).

Then run your disc copy to move the installation files over to it.

The boot block on a CD is not generally moved by copy programs; it is on a different area of the drive determined by physical characteristics and the BIOS knows where to look.  Everything else is found in a partition.

Where I posted backup copy should read "Emergency boot disk"

I suppose Nero can move the boot blocks, but XP can do it just as easily.

But this is the whole point, with a Linux system you don't need any Windows applications, because you've got Linux applications that do the same job to either the same standard or even better.

And most of today's Linux distros are far more user friendly than Windows XP and from what I hear, they will be much more user friendly than Windows Vista.

No, this is the whole point; there aren't any linux apps that can accomplish what I need for my job.  I wish there were, but the cold hard fact is they just don't exist, no matter how many linux zealots screech that "their" OS is better.
