this is the meat the schools get.

What the fuck are we doing wasting money on the FDA for?

juliaoceania -> RE: Beef recalled in 15 states... (5/17/2007 11:55:12 AM)

Ecoli contamination happens. It can happen because someone did not wash their hands well, it can happen when using natural fertilizers.

The people who have the most trouble with Ecoli are those with compromised immune systems and young children. That is why I was very careful with raw meat in my home when I had a very little one. I am still just as careful, but I treated meat packaging like it was toxic waste when my son was wee.

I have to say that I think part of the problem with outbreaks like this is that our systems are very much compromised because of antibiotics and lack of exposure to natural foods. I think this is why people get more ill from food borne illnesses. I think that the "solution" of irradiating our food is going to create more of a problem, and when I see stories like these it makes me think that we are being prepared for that eventuality. If they start irradiating everything I am going to start growing my own food.

Every time I read stuff like this it makes me want to stop eating meat.  I know that ecoli is found in other things (I remember the infamous green onions a few years ago), but the thought of ground beef makes me feel icky after reading this.

Apparently one of their functions is to hold up shipments of non abusable drugs needed in a wildlife rehabilitation clinic.  So the fuck if I know.

That's why I kill my own.  Home butchering is actually remarkably easy and feasible, and it gets you top quality, environmentally friendly meat, either wild harvested (very healthy stuff) or small farm raised under clean conditions, no factory farming bullshit or animal cruelty.   I live in the city and I do it.  You really don't need much space or many specialized tools.  You do need a big ass freezer if you do cows, and it's nice (though not strictly necessary) to have somewhere to hang meat for awhile at controlled temperatures.

For a little perspective:

http://www.beeffrompasturetoplate.org/economics.aspx

"There were 97.1 million cattle in the United States as of January 2006. Total beef production in 2005 was 24.7 billion pounds of beef"

Apparently we pay them to recall meat.

Yeah, that and withhold information and release chemically contaminated meat into the human food market. There is still one supplier in the melamine fiasco that the FDA refuses to name. I have to wonder what companies they supply and what products they manufacture. Can't really see a reason why they would withhold that....unless of course it's a corporate giant and the stuff is in everything. Hmmmm....a supplier that imports wheat flour....can't be many uses for that stuff! I mean other than cereals, breads and pastas...of course. Wheat gluten, wheat flour, rice protein, soy protein, corn gluten. But who eats that stuff right? We already know know it's in hogs, chickens and fish. The FDA says it's safe. Funny though, that statement seems to be contradicted by their memo to employees....the one that says that employees should not allow the contaminated feed to touch their skin or breathe the dust because of the known carcinogenic properties of the stuff. They have to suit up, masks, gloves and shoe covers just to touch the stuff. But it's okay for us to eat it?????

And now beef is recalled. Is there anything left commercially that is safe to eat? Organic doesn't even solve the problem....a fair number of the pet food companies that have recalled claimed to only use organic, US grown product...and some of them never even listed the recalled products as ingredients at all.

Thank you for your post! yes, thats exactly how i believe. It is due to all the antibiotics we are given by the Drs. You get them for everything from something they don't really think is a bacterial infection to something really serious like MRSA the antibiotic resistant staph that is out there. I had an operation and ended up with it. it took me 3 different dosages of antibiotics to even get rid of it. and i was weak, real suseptible to other things every time i went out. and it took me weeks to recover from that. it was insane.

They SoyLent Blue is quite good, there's a shortage of Green currently, however.

slaverosebeauty -> RE: Beef recalled in 15 states... (5/17/2007 3:25:09 PM)

Just one more reason for me to want to go vegitarian, or at least free-range as far as meet goes. I don't eat much beef anyways, this just adds another reason for that, as far as the schools go, my son doesn't eat much beef, so he is safe, besides, he has a strong immune system and he eats more chicken than anything.

Now, if only seafood would have more warnings I would be safe. lol

1) chicken is every bit as dangerous as beef, probably more so

quote:

What is salmonella?
Salmonella is a type of bacteria. It is usually found in poultry, eggs, unprocessed milk and in meat and water. It may also be carried by pets like turtles and birds.

http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/health_advice/facts/salmonella.htm

2) Beef is not the only thing one has to worry about with ecoli

3) cross contamination is really rather common in the food and beverage industry. I have actually seen cooks take salad veggies and move them on to blood pooled cutting boards (yes I ratted them out to the manager, but you get the picture that you do not know what you come into contact with at any restaurant).

4) you can come into contact with the ecoli bacteria strain almost anywhere that someone who does not wash their hands touches after using the restroom. Humans carry this bacteria in their digestive tract, not just cows. It is the primary reason that both my Daddy and I have a anal to mouth taboo...

5) As has been mentioned earlier in the thread, veggies carry ecoli too

kinkyviolet -> RE: Beef recalled in 15 states... (5/17/2007 4:01:06 PM)

You don't have to be afraid of everything you eat. Just make sure it's cooked thoroughly (kills the bacteria) and keep a clean, sanitary kitchen (prevents the spread of bacteria). Of course, you can't control the sanitary conditions in a restaurant. That's what health inspectors are for.

By the way, organic food products, as I understand it, are just produced without using artificial chemicals/fertilizers/feed/pesticides/preservatives/etc. Whether something is organic or not has little or nothing to do with what bacteria might be lurking in it.
