I drive a Chevy Prizm, only with the A/C on when my son is in the car, otherwise, I roll the windows down; I trip link as much as I can. For those of us who are in the lower-middle class, the gas prices are hurting us, a lot. I don't live close enough to most things to walk, and riding a bike right now, is not the smartest thing or logical.

To those who drive an SUV or a 'BIG' toy because you think it makes you 'cool'  unless you have  BIG family or spend a LOT of time hauling stuff, like kids, equipment, etc, why not give the environment [and your pocket book] a break, and be realistic. Downsize.

MstrssPassion -> RE: Gas prices (5/21/2007 9:25:10 AM)

I've already cut back.... been cutting back since it hit the $2 mark so I voted subbie pulling a rickshaw

Somehow it seemed far more dignified than schlepping a back pack full of groceries back from the grocery store

leakylee -> RE: Gas prices (5/21/2007 9:41:29 AM)

i have been cutting back for about the last year. although i dont have that far to get to the evils of wally world, it surely cuts down on the running. i will admit that my monte doesnt get the best milage in the world. i bet i am not running much better than alot of the newer SUV's, but it is paid for..hehe..

the gas hitting 3.20 here today has wiped out my plans of heading to miami for the holiday weekend. it will be kicking it around here, and hoping we arent smoked out again.

HutchGarahl -> RE: Gas prices (5/21/2007 11:42:07 AM)

In the past week here, gas has gone from $2.79 to $3.20, so needless to say, I don't go much anywhere now unless needed. I am planning for a tip next month, even though i'm sure gas is gonna be even higher. But my youngest is coming home for spring vacation, so we're gonna be taking a trip to visit with her sister and get to see the granbaby. It'll be the first time the girls have seen each other since Christmas.

When the price of fuel becomes prohibitive then the rich will have someplace to drive their SUV's

Only a few cents shy of the predicted summer high of $ 3.50 this morning........driving to work is getting more and more expensive.

Archer -> RE: Gas prices (5/21/2007 12:54:42 PM)

Lets say just for comparison value we use $2.50 old price to $3.00 new perice
.50/ gallon increase
Average milage for a car 15,000 a year
Figure 25 MPG (not great but OK for a US vehicle)
That means 600 gallons a year gasoline
Increase of .50 a gallon
$300 a year change in transportation cost.

Just as a matter of perspective.

41 miles a day average for the year
that's $1.00 a day change in most people's gasoline budget.

For some folks that's a big deal for most of us we could find that in cutting back on a luxury item like Starbucks.

LaTigresse -> RE: Gas prices (5/21/2007 1:05:16 PM)

If indeed the increase was only 50 cents here and I only drove that low of miles per year. Our carpooled commute is 140 miles a day, 5 days a week......not counting ANY driving other than to and from work we are at 36,400 miles per year. A year ago our gas was around $2.20 per gallon, this morning it was $3.3999. So yeah, a bit more than $300.00 a difference per year.

Granted, we both still make more working in the city than we would living near where we do, and there is no way we could find a similar property near the city for even twice what we paid for where we are now. It's a trade off.

Ohhhh, as for the poll. I have always been a cheapass and not driven more than absolutely necessary. I live in the middle of nowhere and try very hard to avoid having to run into town on the weekends. I also try to do my shopping on my way home from work rather than make a special trip. Alot of things that many people purchase locally, like pet supplies, cosmetics and holiday shopping, I order online and have delivered to my place of employment (no extra trip for the UPS or Fedex). Saves time and money. So, I couldn't do the poll as I doubt I could cut back much more and still have a job.

Archer:
Please tell us which U.S. cars get 25mpg.?  The last I read on this subject was that the "U.S, fleet" averages 15mpg,  If you are going by the sticker in the window that has been shown to be nothing more than ink on paper and not related to reality in any fashion what so ever.

My 4wheel drive extended cab dodge that sits in the garage all the time gets more than 15mpg.......the daily commute car gets a little over 30 mpg.

It's somewhere around 19ish on average, and yes that is mostly highway as I do live in the country. BUT, when I drive it, it is usually pulling a horse trailer with two horses and misc horse crap. I also baby it, no heavy, stomping on the gas, type take offs.

Oh good lord I have no clue! I can tell you it is a 1996 Dodge Ram, 4 wheel drive, extended cab with 60ishthousand miles on it and heavy duty tires, I had put on special, for driving thru deep snow...........bout the extent of my wisdom.

Oh and the back seat is actually quite comfy to sleep in when the campsite gets rained out. I bought it brand new and wish it had the back door(a year early) and leather seats(also a year early) and a diesel engine (kind of a dog on hills). But it is paid for and very clean. I baby it because I don't want to buy another for a looooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnggggggg time.

StellaByStarlite -> RE: Gas prices (5/21/2007 3:02:00 PM)

My husband has a gas card that he's allowed to use even when he's not at work, so we never have to pay for gas. Even so, he uses more gas driving around NE Ohio ( and lately, as far down as Columbus) then we do rolling around town. He's a social worker- more specifically, a family planning specialist for a non-profit adoption agency, so he has to make home visits and assessments wherever his clients live.

Some people get a little resentful when I mention the free gas in conversation, but it's considered part of his income. LSWs aren't usually living large, so yeah, we take it and we're grateful for it. But we do watch the gas heating at home. =) Oh, and he drives a Honda Civic. Great little cars!!

My dodge is about thirty years older than yours but because of some modifications I have made it gets somewhat better fuel economy and it runs on propane which is only about a buck and a half a gallon.[:D]

Thank god for that spiffy new corn burner we have now.

Emperor1956 -> RE: Gas prices (5/21/2007 3:23:23 PM)

On the calculation of the "real cost" of $4.00/gal (plus) gas:

First, Archer, your numbers are all on the low side.  The gas prices here (Illinois - Suburbs of Chicago) are already $3.60/gal and we will see $4.00 in June.  (Of course, in the inner city, it already is $4.30 and up -- why not F*ck those that can lease afford it, first, eh).

Your annual miles driven at 15,000 is based on a low and old estimate.  With split families, people living farther from work, etc. I think you'll find the US annual average is creeping up to about 16,800 -- and will keep going up.

And while your hypothetical gas price is too low, your MPG is woefully high at 25.  Look at American fleet rates -  AVERAGE CAFE standards are 17.9 or so.  And far too many vehicles can't get better than 15.

Now figure REAL mileage, not the "treadmill" numbers - drop that MPG 22% on average.  My point:  Your $300/year becomes closer to $800 for many folks...and while cutting out Starbucks and one porno rental a month might cover that...why?  Why give up anything to burn more of a noxious, dangerous liquid in your car?

But none of this matters, really.  Attacking your calculations isn't important -- its the attitude.  I came to this realization a short while ago:   I MUST CUT DOWN ON MY USE OF FOSSIL FUEL.

Why?  I'm NOT green.  I won't go out of my way to harm the planet, but I don't hug trees (too scratchy) and I don't especially care about my carbon footprint.  So why did I buy a 2002 Toyota Prius (and got rid of the Jeep Liberty AND the Subaru Outback)?  Pure selfishness.  And may I suggest you, Archer, and the other folks on here, get just as selfish, too.   I stopped burning through 30+ gal a week because (1) I work too hard for my money to piss it into a gas tank and out some oil co. exec's stock options and (2) I don't need to fund the House of Saud while they are arming the next 9/11 band.  And you don't need to, either.  Get selfish.

E.
