I will drink box wine if I am at a cheap restaurant and that is all they offer, but I will not drink white zin in the bag (shudders)

I can relate to that shudder.

The Franzia Rhine Wine is heaven if you're looking to get your paper bag on.

It's all good after the first glass or two....

sweeter and drier are rather at cross purposes.

But Reislings are dry as a rule (liebfrumilch is good) and Zeller Schwartz Katz is the bomb for cheap sweet.

Sweet and dry are opposites.

Fast Reply;

LOL, some of you folks are funny!  Yeah, screw tops, boxes and even bottle caps (like beer) will be how we find most of our everyday wine.  It’s coming.  Be comforted by the fact it IS new technology…just like the synthetic corks we now enjoy.

And tannin?  It is not what wine is made with, kiddo…it is an essence OF wine; comes straight from the grape skin & seeds.  It’s what bites at the edges of your tongue, when drinking a young red…and the presence of it helps to age a wine gracefully.  It’s one of the things that makes a wine ‘big’ and wine with lots will last 40 years, a wine with little may not last five.

While I know they ‘tan hides’ making leather…I didn’t know tannin was any part of a shoe.

And, as far as bourbon not causing headaches…it sounds to me like someone drinks responsibly.  I am here to tell ya…any alcohol will cause a headache if ya drink too much of it.  LOL

Sweet wines (often confused with fruity)?  Look for anything called a desert wine or anything ‘late harvest’ or ‘off-dry’:

Reds:
Muscat (can be red or white, many are sweet)
Some Beaujolais
Mourvedre (or Mataro)

Whites:
(Muscat (AKA: Moscado, Moscato)
(French) Sauternes
Eiswein (or Ice Wine)
Many Rieslings
Many Gewurztraminers
Some Vouvray
Some Chenin Blanc
Some Viognier
French Colombard
Marsanne
Semillon

‘White Zinfandel’ (made by pulling the skins of quicky…can (I stress that word ‘can’) be quite good).

And of course, many Ports and Sherries

This is why quality bottled wines still use natural corks: the acidity reacts with the plastic.

Except... the French are moving to screw tops in droves, and are also experimenting with boxes even for 750mls. In fact, many wine people I know think French wines will be exclusively screw cap in ten years.

BTW... mybag is mylar, not plastic.

New Zealand is strictly screw cap these days.

The problem is that cork only comes from a specific type of tree in a specific area of France...and it's being depleted quickly and therefor increasing in price, so winemakers are having to explore other options.

I personally don't mind the plastic corks, screwcaps are ok, but I still have a mental block with boxed wine.

I'm not a wine snob, actually most of it gives me a headache.  But it seems tacky to drink wine from a box.  So I guess I'm a purist. I'd rather have harder liquor served in the appropriate glass.    [:)]

Honestly I would recommend against sweeter wines for a novice wine drinker.

Try a young not oak aged Chardonnay. It will be moderate in the dry to sweet range with lots of fruit in the taste and goes great with all sorts of lighter summer time meals that aren't too strong flavored. Chardonnay aged in oak is a very different wine that should wait till you've got some experience with wine.

Dessert wines are sweet, sometimes almost cloyingly so, and are best drunk in very small amounts. Sipping a little is fine but I really can't imagine drinking a couple of regular wine glasses of any of them.

Tolosa and Kim Crawford both make decent unoaked Chards that are reasonably priced, in the $10-$15 range.

Thanks, I only drink unoaked Chards at restaurants or if someone brings a bottle to a get together and couldn't remember the names of any.

I spent too many years in food and beverage, and in one incarnation I worked as a bartender. The right glass is important, although these are the things that lead my Daddy to believe I am anal retentive.....

Presentation, ritual, these are important things.  A little anal-retentiveness is not a bad thing.
