Ok.. I am not a wine snob by any stretch but I would have never imagined that a decent wine could come in box.

But after three glasses tonight, I stand corrected.

hey FDD,

You just gave my favorite answer to the good wine/bad wine question.
Drink a glass of it,  if you want another of the same, it is good wine; if you don't, it isn't.

I like good wine.  But I'm not picky.  If it's in a box, and it's all that's around, I won't snub it.

Edited to add:  I'm a Cabernet girl, myself.  I love dry reds.  Most of the boxed wine is just too sweet for my palate.

You're on the money, Sinergy!  Four to seven years, though?  Back in the day wines were made to last 20 years, anyway. Wines from 100 years ago have been open and enjoyed, too...

Depends on the type of wine.  If I remember correctly, wines with a higher sugar content age longer.  The wines I prefer (red Zin, Cab, Shiraz, Pinot) tend to go south after 10 years or more.  Still fabulous, but I started to taste their age.  I had an estate bottle of from Beringer Vineyards my father bought for me (90 or so dollars in 1984) when I was in my 20s.  I never drank it until a friend had a wine tasting party in 2003.  It was the flagship wine of the evening and far outshown all the others, but it should have been uncorked 10 years prior.

The party of notes in the mouth was something to write home to Mom about.

Except... the French are moving to screw tops in droves, and are also experimenting with boxes even for 750mls. In fact, many wine people I know think French wines will be exclusively screw cap in ten years.

This is terribly snobbish, I admit, but the screw tops irk me because they make it look like I was too cheap to shell out on a decent bottle of wine to bring to a friend's (the main reason I buy it).

I read all the way through the thread, but unless I missed it ..... what was the wine, Daddy ?

Blax Box Cab.

To answer the off thead question, Georgetown is loaded with wine shops.
