I have very tough skin, so anything the bullies here want to say will not phase me. That said, many people are mean, nasty and rude here for no reason. I believe they get their rocks off that way, then they disguise their nastiness by saying "I was only trying to be funny, and these are only words typed on a screen." Maybe so, but you are known here for the words you type. If the words are not really who you are, then who are you? The meanness and nastiness of many posters is very obvious for all here to see. Great thread! I love it.

Well.. the fact of the matter is that this is a one dimensional communication device. I have seen comments be misconstrued as mean/nasty may times. Have had my own words misinterpreted that way. You see, there is no tone or inflection, often times people miss the emoticon that would tip them off to the real meaning. And some folks just take every word as literal. Sure some people can be mean, I am pretty sarcastic at times myself, that is my sense of humor and very common in New England, a trait my friends find endearing and share with me. mbmbn

Erin - i looked up the definition basically because i was confused by the original reference to the Rio Grande. You look at the webster's dictionary definition it doesn't include that but it said it was in the history of the word. That is what many folks are confusing. You look at other sources for a definition that is included. i base definitions on webster's not wikipedia or other sources. i am tired of folks trying to convulute answers by showing sites that are inaccurate. minnetar

Who the fuck are these people who come on boards & tell others that they have to behave in standards that they feel are acceptable to them?? Create your own board & moderate the members who you would have post & what you feel is acceptable to your posting standards... live inside a plastic bubble & sing la-la-la The only rules that are set for anyone on the CM boards are the one defined by those who created them & who moderate them because outside of those rules... I have just as much right to express my POV as the next... I bought my computer & pay for the service that connects me to the net just like anyone else on here. I post with compassion & I post with grit... I will be supportive & understanding & I will tell someone they are full of shit.... Why? Because I am completely preparred to do the same thing if I was looking them in the eye.
