i don't need to haul anything, get up mountain trails, or any other such uses of bigger vehicles (i drive a p.o.s. 4 banger), but there are wiser choices even among suv's which can be read about in places like this: http://trucks.about.com/od/suvreviews/tp/best_gas_rating.htm
one certainly has the right to determine what's best for them, but it's kinda nifty if that works out to be good for everyone else that comes along as well. good choices, i think they call that. sure does keep a lot of automakers (well, a few consolidated auto makers) in business.

If you've ever played Grand Theft Auto III, this ad for the Maibatsu Mostrosity explains it all:

"Hi, I commute alone on a crowded freeway, so naturally, I needed a car that can seat twelve and is equipped to drive across arctic tundra.  It just makes me feel bettah!"

And as far as gas mileage goes...most of the purpose-built racecars I race get better gas mileage than a Ford Excursion or anything Hummer makes.  So, they're slow, handle like crap, can't even pass a gas station, have a habit of rolling over in accidents, and any sport wagon can haul just as much inside without the performance problems that plauge every SUV.  Pretty lame if you ask me.

Sports cars annoy me. Particularly because the people who get behind the weel feel that they have to push the envilope with them. Granted, there are safe sports-car drivers, but I do see an uncannily large amount of sports cars in ditches, with everying bent out of shape, and the driver bleeding from some place vital.

I don't see very many SUV's in accidents -and that's considering the roads are plagued with them here.

Love the freedom to buy an SUV.  I think everyone should be able to buy one!  If you have the money to fuel it, register it, pay the luxury taxes on it and maintain it then drive it.  The same applies to yachts and airplanes and snowmobiles and wave runners, right?  Make money, live large and pay no attention to the whiners!!! buy what ever vehicle you want but pay the price at the pump and dont colpain about having a gas hog if its what you bought ;)
