ORIGINAL: Vendaval U.S. men are doing more and more grocery shopping, both for themselves and their families, but retailers are still not doing much to make the trip any more enticing, retail consultants and industry experts said. "Men do represent a large part of grocery shopping dollars and they aren't being very well accommodated ... sales are being lost," Mandy Putnam, vice president at consulting firm TNS Retail Forward said. Very true. IMO, grocery stores are deliberately set up to be inefficient, assuming that as someone is forced to walk through several different aisles, they will see more things that they "remember that they needed", or will otherwise be inclined to impulse-buy. To assist in this, store directories are minimal and often outdated, and layouts are occasionally changed. There is a lot of money, and a lot of research done on physical product placement in food retailing- often more than is spent on the actual product. i also agree that there is far too much artificial market segmentation and specialization. Cereal i'm okay with (Golden Grahams, check), but when it comes to "Health and Beauty" items... holy shit. [&:] At least a hundred variations on toothpaste (if they make one that's "Whitening AND Tartar Control", why would i want just "Whitening" or just "Tartar Control"?), and shampoos and conditioners... anywhere from a hundred million to fifty billion, i'd have to guess. Do i want my hair to be thinner, thicker, moister, fuller, or shinier? i just want clean, and not smelling like my great-aunt's perfume, okay? But if you want to know why i really feel discriminated against, i go to check out, i'm standing in line for ten or fifteen minutes, and what do i have to read? Magazines about celebrity weddings, Jon-Benet Ramsey, and how to make cookies that look like Disney princesses. Where's my goddamned car magazines? [:@]
