I loved LA's reply, that summed it up for me.

I find 3rd person replies annoying.  Actually, many online ways of speaking I find annoying.  I have never heard this type of speech in real life, and would probably start giggling if I did and I know Master would just walk away, it annoys him too.

Plain English works best for easy reading.  As LA said it is like the poster is saying LOOK HOW AWESOMELY SUBMISSIVE I AM TALKING LIKE THIS, ISN'T THIS COOL?

This poster can't resist pointing out that dear Queen Victoria (who was definitely not a sub) referred to herself in the third person in all her official correspondence. She would say "The Queen thinks . . ." or what have you. Miss Manners always uses the third person too; this poster is not sure why.

This poster recognizes that both these examples are irrelevant to the thread, but he couldn't resist sharing them.

I think the Queen refers to herself as "We" in the Royal Plural tradition. "We" meaning the State and Church of England.

Bob Dole refered to himself in 3rd, too, remember that? lol. It was painful to witness.

cjenny -> RE: Third speak... (5/29/2007 4:51:33 AM)

It drives me nuts because it is so often used inconsistently, many writers of third person speak seem to lose track of the correct pronouns which in turn makes me struggle to ascertain just who is saying what.
I would however rather read third person speak than the W/we talking to T/them with Y/you, A/all of T/those slow me down too much!

slavegirljoy -> RE: Third speak... (5/29/2007 1:06:09 PM)

i understand that some people dislike the use of certain forms of expressive writing/speaking that are used by others on the forums and/or in person.  So what!

The question was not "Do you like or dislike the use of speaking in the 3rd person and why?"  The question was "Why does it occur?"

Why do submissives speak in the third person? Is it something their Master/Mistresses want? If so then why? If not for their Dom/Domme, why do it?

this slave wishes that people would stick to answering the question.  It's annoying to see an interesting question posed and then have to read a lot of opinions that offer nothing to answering the question asked.

It drives me friggin nuts!

I find it difficult to even understand what the person is saying.  When wanting to carry on a conversation, it can be a real stumbling block.

zindyslave -> RE: Third speak... (5/29/2007 6:10:56 PM)

Well, the person I talk to the most that uses third speak doesn't use it to much, and when she does she does it in a way that you can understand.

I agree. Whose to judge what works for some. Some do it some don't. Everyone has their own reasons for doing it.

I've heard it in real life, and in fact have caused it to happen. Whatever else may be said about it, it is a useful way to 1) cause a submissive to think about their manners and what they are saying (which, in turn, cuts down on mindless chatter, at least until for awhile); and 2) measure the degree of attention a dom is paying to their sub's activities. While the particular issue of speaking in the third person is largely an arbitrary detail, making such a rule is a context in which to exert control and change ingrained habits.  In effect, it's an exercise in mindfulness for the sub, and it's enforcement is an exercise in mindfulness for the dom.  Being a proponent of mindfulness, I find 'third speak' a useful tool.

MinofSin -> RE: Third speak... (5/29/2007 11:32:57 PM)

The only time my slave speaks in 3rd person is when she is being punished for some infringement on the rules I have laid down.  According to her, it is a humbling experience, and while it annoys her, it reminds her at the same time what she did to cause that sort of speak, and to try not to do it again.  The last time was about 3 months ago, and she had to speak in that manner for a week.  I was so happy when that week was over I didn't know what to do.  But the behavior which caused the "punishment" has not repeated itself, so it was effective, and I will use it again.

Why do submissives speak in the third person?

sometimes its just purely for fun

sometimes its just something that comes from out of no where

sometimes its to get you wet

sometimes you feel a deep desire to honor your partner

sometimes you are showing off to other slaves

sometimes it because you are feeling marginalized

sometimes you are wanting to feel even more marginalized

sometimes it is to fit in at a party or a chartroom

sometimes it is out of obedience

sometimes its to take the piss

sometimes its just to feel your station

sometimes its about getting into character

and sometimes it feels really right in a way no one can explain to you unless you have been there

I've read through the thread and I have to agree with LA - there have been some people that have spoken in third person so seamlessly that I didn't even notice, and others it was like a big blaring sign screaming, "lookatmelookatmelookatme."

There was someone I dated for a while (he wasn't at the point of being my dominant or owner, but we were certainly dating and trying to move towards that point) who had me speak in third person and also had very severe speech restrictions in place.  I enjoyed it a lot, I had to think very explicitly before I spoke and had to structure what I said before I even opened my mouth.  It was a nice reminder of place and also made me more aware of what I said.  I think I would have been uncomfortable having to interact with every single person in that manner, but I did enjoy having those restrictions in how I interacted with that dominant.

StrictPapa -> RE: Third speak... (5/30/2007 7:50:59 AM)

Third speak although common to Goreans...became common in the 50's 60's for those interested in High Protocol. It still has it's place amoung slaves at high Protocol fetish events or dinners and tea service.  At an events such as these..the slave has specific..mannerisms..speach patterns...and behaviorisms to perform. It can be a lot of fun, but only in those kinds of situations. Other than that, the slave remains in his or her service slave role or basic slave role.

Wyrd -> RE: Third speak... (5/30/2007 12:26:32 PM)

It has many reasons, each Dominant and submissive likely have their own reasons for it's use, just as A/all the P/people W/ho use slashspeech.  The only time it is a problem is when people consider their version of kink better than someone else's, I have had my girls use 3rd person speech as punishments or to make them think before speaking, and will likely continue to do so.

If you really think your particualr version of the lifestyle is better than everyone else's, maybe you need to stop and take a really good look at your own life.

CuriousLord -> RE: Third speak... (5/30/2007 2:10:45 PM)

It's typically a submissive act.  Still, I'm pretty much as dominant as it gets, and I do it regularly.

Speaking in the third person often holds back any sign of dominance.  This is important for slaves as, well, not to speak out of place.  For me, it's important, as I'm natrually dominant to an extreme and use it to catch myself from commanding everyone around me.

Also, one might use this in the legimate third sense.  One might do so, despite oneself being a member of such a third party, to indicate a generalization as opposed to one's own personal view.

I find speaking in third is extremely suitable to analytical minds- both on the speaking and receiving ends.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Third speak... (5/30/2007 2:14:17 PM)

Julius Caesar wrote in the third person, and he wasn't exactly submissive.

Yup, that's a good point.  It's often a submissive act, but very dominant people can do it to restrain their nature for the sake of communication.

Plus I'm sure some people have other reasons.  I wonder what some might be?

Edit:  Just because I know someone, somewhere out there's going to take this the wrong way.. I am not saying a person has to speak in the third from time to time to be dominant.  I'm saying that some do, and that's a reason for it.  So, no, I'm not insulting the "Domliness" of any who might not speak in the third.

zindyslave -> RE: Third speak... (5/30/2007 2:42:55 PM)

Well, I use slash speech when I am addressing an audience that is both Dom/me and sub, usually as respect to the Dom/mes.

Why don't you respect the subs, switches, top, bottoms and various others?

You didn't use the slash speech just now, and this is definitely a mixed audience.

At times I will use this as you have above, so as not be gender, or orientation specific.
