I have a great deal of interest in this and I've even experimented with a few people as well.

(I even written my own personal "handbook" {short} on the being a master and owning a slave. Up for critiscm and compliments at your request)

You can only really become a Master to the person who desires to call you just that.
You could be a Master of this, that or tother too but then someone will always tell you, you are doing it the wrong way!
You can call yourself ‘Master’ but that only shows us that you have a dominant streak.
There really is no qualification!

Are you ready to be devoured online? Because this post will provoke...

There is no sure fire way to be a 'Master'.

You either are or are not - and depending on the people you surround yourself with - you will be or you will not.
Writing a handbook is always good - just be prepared for constructive and not so constructive thoughts.

So then the real question would be, would a slave around my age be willing to start out this lifestyle with me? Let alone me being able to find one.

Become a student of your calling. Read. Explore. Become active in your local community. Go to national leather events. Go to demos and workshops. Study how to create and maintain healthy relationships. Be willing to develop yourself and your psyche. Through it all, be open, take what works for you and discard the rest.

I'd suggest fleshing out your profile a bit. Who are you? What do you want? What are you expecting? What do you have to give?

I'd be interested in reading your handbook.

.Anything is impossible.

My advice would be, do not treat BDSM as any different than any other relationship in this big old world.  Do not seperate it from 'reality' because it is reality to many people.  Be true to yourself - never settle - and be patient.
Have you read books?  Been to a munch or club?  Do you have friends who are into BDSM also?  Network - meet people - and remember that every single person you meet has something to teach you - sometimes its good, sometimes, not so good.
You have a wonderful time of learning ahead.

Peace

How do you write a handbook on being a master when you have to ask how to become one?

I once heard that one can not become a master in something until he's done (X hours of) daily research for at least 7 years in the chosen topic.

As for my opinion.... I own Robert.  He is my slave.  I am Mistress to him.  I am not some general Mistress for anyone and everyone.  I am not a BDSM expert however I have lots and lots of experience in many different things.  I feel within BDSM I've mastered a few skills, such as needle play.  Someone else, I suppose may not agree with that.  I feel I have lots to learn still too.  The day I feel I've mastered it all, I really hope someone puts me out of my and their misery.

Keep an open mind and be flexible - learn all you can, watch, listen, be cautious, take responsibility, attend seminars, lifestyle events, make friends, go to munches, don't be over zealous, know and understand yourself first and what you expect from a future D/s relationship and be able to communicate well, etc....

In my mind "Master" means having learned all there is to know about a subject so you are proficient enough to be able to perform in that particular field.  That takes time and a willingness to put in the effort required.

The Easy 2-Step Process!
1.  Define "master", as you wish it to be.
2.  Perform in such a manner.

Being a Master, if it's who you truly are, is as easy as breathing.  Just act as you want.  If it's not that easy, I'd question the wisdom in adopting such a stance.

I note, often, that many seem to try to go into a role tha they think they'd like.  And try to act upon it.  This is especially apparent in "slave"s that find it hard to obey or "Master"s who still yield to their slaves, finding it hard to act on personal desires.

Act as you will.  Then figure out what title is most suiting to such action.

Well, i just looked at your profile and i have to say that whoever took that picture is a very good photographer.  It's a wonderful picture!  But, then again, i have a passion for B&W photography.

As for your question about how to "become a master" is concerned, to me, it is like most things in this life, you become what you do.  From my perspective, it isn't a destination that you actually arrive at.  It's a journey that you experience.  You learn as you go and you never stop learning or growing.

The Easy 2-Step Process!
1.  Define "master", as you wish it to be.

So Master can be or mean anything - it has whatever definition you want to ascribe to it - what if one wishes it to be idiot or abuser?

2.  Perform in such a manner.

Those two premises don't make sense to me.

Being a Master, if it's who you truly are, is as easy as breathing.  Just act as you want.  If it's not that easy, I'd question the wisdom in adopting such a stance.

You don't feel there is any learning process here to become a Master? No amount of exploration, research, observation required?

I note, often, that many seem to try to go into a role tha they think they'd like.  And try to act upon it.  This is especially apparent in "slave"s that find it hard to obey or "Master"s who still yield to their slaves, finding it hard to act on personal desires.

Act as you will.  Then figure out what title is most suiting to such action.

That would be like saying i want to be a model, so just act like one and then be one..... doubtful i would be successful on many levels as much as i might want it to happen, it is not going to.  i can say i want to be a chef - but i would have to learn certain cooking techniques to be a chef - i could act like one, even cook, but i doubt what i would produce would be edible by the standards of chef cooking.

Since you're writing a handbook, you might want to look to a similarly-aimed handbook by Jack Rinella, The Master's Manual.

Maybe you could give us a little more description of what "a master" is to you. For some, "master" denotes the person in charge in a given, existing relationship. For others, "master" denotes the hitter and binder in a playing twosome. For yet others, it denotes someone who has spent a year or three in graduate school for a given subject, such as theology, business, or mathematics. You can fill all of those roles--I do!--but you would want to do quite different things to get to each of those roles.
