There is one bald mistake (repeated by Lou Dobbs but completely incorrect) and a few misconceptions here.
1) There have been 7000 cases of leprosy in the last 30 years.
2) Dengue and malaria can cross the borders all by themselves, via mosquitos.  And the warmer it gets, the farther north those mosquitos can go.
3) Increases in mumps can be due to a decrease in vaccination (people can refuse to give their children the standard immunizations).  There was an outbreak of measles at UCSB the year before I went back (1990), and I was required to have MMR vaccination before I started classes.

" Dobbs refused to correct debunked leprosy statistic -- will Boyles?Summary: On his May 7 broadcast, CNN host Lou Dobbs backed the veracity of his report citing "7,000 cases of leprosy" reported in the last three years in the United States, despite federal health statistics that state otherwise. Colorado Media Matters noted when a guest on Peter Boyles' radio show made a similar assertion regarding "7,000 cases" of leprosy that government statistics contradict the figure, but Boyles -- a frequent guest on Dobbs' show -- as of May 9 had not corrected the claim. Yah, I saw that.  Wonder if Lou Dobbs will be talking about how the whitest of white bread was responsible for bringing a deadly disease into this country? [8|]

I like Lou Dobbs. I also like free speech tv, amy goodman, link tv, bill moyer, much of the NON-CORPORATE media.

I take it you have a nanny from tim-buc-too ???  hence your disdain for Dobbs.

It is kind of interesting how some in here have completely dismissed the idea that immigrants cannot possibly bring in disease. How do you know that they are not? Because we are sure as hell not checking them before they come in.

We will see how much you are willing to protect these people and our country's insane open-border policy when you, your loved one, or your child gets one of these rare diseases that are being brought in. Then opinions may finally change for the better in this country.

Some facts from the CDC:
-Resistant TB was practically non-existant in Virginia until 2002 where it rose 17%
-Washington DC saw an increase in TB by 188%. Public health officials noted the disease was mostly carried by immigrants.
-The Queens, New York, Health Department attributed 81 percent of new TB cases in 2001 to immigrants, with 42 percent of all new TB cases ascribed to the foreign born individuals.
-Chagas Disease, which has no known cure and has always been rare in the United States, has risen by 28% over the past several years. This is a disease that was previously contained to locations in Latin America with poor hygeine.
-Over the past 3 years the United States has over 7,000 new cases of Leprosy.
-Another rare disease in the US, Dengue fever, had an outbreak in Webb county, Texas which borders Mexico.
-An outbreak of Hepatitis in Pittsburgh, PA was linked to Chi-Chi's Restaurant that employed illegal aliens in the kitchen that tested positive for Hepatitis. 3,000 people were infected, 2 died.
-Other diseases rare to the US have suddenly shown increases including Polio, Malaria, and Mumps.

Just because the truth isn't politicialy correct doesn't make it false. Sorry, but Im not willing to put the health of myself or my family on the line because the corporations need cheap labor or the Democratic Party needs cheap votes. My greatgrandparents came through Ellis Island on their way to America. They had to strip, be examined, and cough to prove they were not carrying any disease that may be communicable to the population. There is nothing racial about disease. These bugs do not discriminate. And I don't want them in our population just because you think it is politically incorrect to check these people. And since the advances in diagnosing these diseases has improved since 1920...this should not even be an issue today.

Yes there is a chance that illegals will bring in diseases from there country of origin....However, the story is about some guy from Georgia...It has not been mentioned (at least ffrom what I have read) how he contracted this particular strain....Since it is resilient to treatment it would possible suggest it came from a place where treatment is available and this form of TB mutated....the US prescribes anti-biotics for every little problem.....This could be one of the results stemming from this practice.

can you provide a link for the above source....Not trying to pick on you....I think it would be an interesting read.

the US prescribes anti-biotics for every little problem...

I once asked my buddy, who was working on his M.D./PhD in Immunology, why that was the case.

Apparently, your immune system releases "titres" (sp?) which prime it to fight either a viral infection or
a bacterial infection.  The problem is that being primed to fight a virus makes the immune system less capable of fighting bacterial infections.  Antibiotics are perscribed while a person is fighting a viral infection in order to prevent opportunistic infections from occuring.

Not saying this is bad, just saying this is the case.

We are encountering super-virii because of a lot of things.

a)  People do not finish the medication, which results in those bacteria breeding (can you say "evolving?") that have increased resistance to antibiotics.

b)  The widespread use of antibiotics in farm animals.  These are simply injected into the cows or pigs or whatever in order to prevent illness, by people with little understanding of the long term effects of overuse of antibiotics.

According to him we are about 2 medications away from an unstoppable staphlococcus infection, and various other bacteria are not far behind.

I tend to avoid taking anything perscribed by the doctor unless he did a culture and isolated the particular infection source.
