Today it became official. I collared someone for the first time.

She is about 1 to 1 1/2 years old and is a gray and black tiger cat. I got her from the local shelter where she has stayed for the last several weeks. When I brought her home and took her out of the carrier I said, "Welcome to my world."

I will post a picture when I am able to figure out how to do so.

Anyone else ever rescue an animal from a shelter or other rescue group?

Awww.....how cute!  I have a gray and white tiger cat too.  She is both a little tawny and silver.  I have rescued animals, but I am nothing compared to an old gf of mine.  She was trying to rescue a goat off the freeway near New Orleans many, many, years ago.  It sure got noticed too...lol.  People still talk about it.  She had gotten a rope around it somehow and was trying to lead it.

Your cat sounds sweet!

I have a funny story to share about that.

Both of our dogs are rescued, but the first one we got was a black lab that one of Master's co-workers found along the highway.   She was with her brother, and the co-worker only wanted the male and was going to kill Katie (our black lab), so Master rescued her and brought her home.

However, I was working and new nothing about it.   When I got home from work the front door was locked, which I found to be rather funny, since he never locked the door when he was home.   I fished for my keys and opened the door, only to find Master coming out of the bedoom.  He says, I have something to tell you.    I had a sinking feeling in my gut, and said, what?

He said, I have a young, black bitch back in the bedroom that wants to meet you.    I was livid, thinking the worst possible scenerio, but I said nothing, and decided to go meet this young black bitch before ripping his head off.     I went into the bedroom, and ..nothing.  Master said, well maybe she went into the Master bathroom, just knock on the door and go on in.    So I did, and there looking up at me with the cutest dang face I ever saw, was my tiny little black lab puppy.   :)

She is now 5 yrs old, and spoiled rotten.   :)

All Master could say was, " Well, I wasn't lying to you, she is black, young, and she is a bitch."   lol.

Congratulations, Gauge; that's one lucky kitty, I'm sure. Otis and Daisy are both rescued strays, but I didn't find them at a shelter. Otis was hitting on me in the parking/garage area of an apartment complex in Hemet, CA, and I found Daisy in the alley of my previous house in Alamogordo. Neither of them is collared. In fact, I think they might eventually collar me. That would actually be a pretty accurate representation of the power structure in our household.

They don't let us post pictures here anymore, but you could put some pics on your profile.

I have a Fred and a Zeke who are littermates and 18 years old.  Their mother was a neighborhood stray who I was never able to catch in order to neuter.  I've had them since they were only weeks old as they were born under my porch.  Fred is a fantastic cat.  The best I've ever had.  Zeke pisses on everything, but I still love her.  Every cat I've ever owned has either come from a stray or a shelter.  Cats are magnificent creatures.  Enjoy.

Congratulations Gauge! Many happy years together. What did you name her?

Both of my last two dogs were rescues. A male whippet (Mr Ben) and a male Greyhound (Sammy Dean Sinatra). Both were older when I took them in. Mr. Ben was 10. Sammy Dean was younger but had a rough life as a racing grey. Alot of scars, alot of issues. the sweetest boys ever to grace this earth.

In both cases all it took was one look in the eyes and I knew they were meant to be mine. Both were thought of as unadoptable by the rescues they came from. They even tried to talk me out of Mr Ben. The thought of not bringing him home with me and his staying there one more night instead of in a loving home almost broke my heart. I was insistent and wouldn't take no for an answer. It was a wonderful rescue. I just wanted him home where he belonged. They slashed the fees to almost nothing just because I was willing to take him on. They were both the best boys I've ever had the pleasure of owning in my life.

Neither of them are with me any longer but I know that the last years they had here on earth were the best they ever had. I also know they're waiting for me on the other side. I miss both of those gorgeous brindled boys. There's nothing like that unconditional love they have for their Master (Or Mistress). Perhaps someday I'll do it again. I can't imagine going any other route but through a shelter or rescue, but right now, my heart is just a bit too raw for me to even think about it.

Awwww, that's terrific! I hope the two of you have a long and happy relationship.

I have never gotten a pet from the animal shelter, but I took two abandoned kittens who were going to be taken to the pound. I was having my car fixed, and having to wait around the shop's office until it was done. There was a cardboard box that the mechanic said had been dropped at his door during the night, and there were 4 starving kittens, only a few weeks old, mewing franticly inside it. Since the mechanic already had several cats, and another soon to deliver a new litter of kittens, he said he'd have to take them to the pound. I'd been threatened with doom by my husband if I brought any more critters home, so I tried to hold out, but I couldn't. I intended to take just one, then felt sorry for another one and took her, also. I found out later, that another customer took the other two. Boy, was I wracking my brains to come up with the best possible way to explain this to my husband. (who forgave me, by the way.*L*)

I recently needed some emergency work done on my car, and called to ask the mechanic when he could fix it. When I reminded him that I had taken the kittens off his hands, he took my car in and fixed it immediately, ahead of the ones already there. When my husband asked me later, how on earth had I gotten the car fixed so quickly, I just told him it was amazing what a little "pussy" can do. *L*

Hey! Maybe Congress will pass a resolution declaring a second cat-based holiday. So, instead of just having Daisy Day (July 27...mark your calendars), we'll also have Gauge's Rescued Cat Day.

Hi Gauge, nice to see you again.

I have. Back in Dec went to a profit free animals safe haven place here in town I found. She takes in unwanted and strays. And keeps things going with donations from people who come to adopt animals.

In Dec I went there and found a Catahula Leopard. Gorgous dog from LA. Not but only 2 so far i've found in NC that is registered. Was actually surprised to find a full blooded one in a animal safe haven. He just lovable as can be. And belongs to my youngest and very protective of her.

In Jan we went back to this safe haven place and my oldest found a Solid black cat she just fell in love with and vice versa.  She named it Demonty...it's Finnish for Demon.

We send donations to this safe haven monthly to help it out. That's how she feeds these animals and gets them medical treatment.  Other than that it comes out of her pocket.

Takes special people like her to help stop the slaughter of animals in the pounds. And abuse from owners that think their dog is there to kick when they have a bad day.

Congratulations Guage!!  I've collared seven over the last 42 years ....... the new and brightest stars joined my poly-animal household only 6 weeks ago - male and female littermates.  She was 2 pounds when she came home, but is growing every day with good food and lots of love.  Angelina and Thor - our newest 15 week old kittens

i got my little guy, Spike the Amazing Wonder Dog, from a rescue organization that went to New Orleans after the hurricane...they brought 18 dogs back to our area to adopt...Spike was feral & nobody could get near him to catch him to save him, until the president of the rescue decided to make him her special project...

i've always had cats, so this was a very new experience for me...but, what the heck, it was all new to him too...he got the Amazing Wonder Dog added to his name about 3-4 weeks into our relationship, when it all started to come together for us...he began to understand what it was i wanted of him & to attempt to give it to me & he also let me reach out & pet him for the first time...i had to teach him how to play, what toys were for--although he still doesn't think balls are toys--every command for his safety & behavior...he taught me not to raise my voice when i gave him commands, but to lower it & speak softly...it's still fun to do that in front of a stranger:  to say in a nearly inaudible voice, "go lay down" & watch him drop where he is instantly...i taught him to stop on command, so that if he got loose, he wouldn't run into danger...he's been a godsend to me...my anxiety level is 1/8 what it was before him...

unfortunately, he came to me with undetected health issues that were just diagnosed & his liver enzymes are rising at a very rapid rate, meaning that he wouldn't survive the treatment for the other issues...without treatment, i may have him for 6 more months...i adore this little guy & we will have the best time in the time he has left...he has taught me so much & i am forever grateful...

he's not my first rescue, only the latest...the next will undoubtedly be another rescue...they're so special...congratulations on the collaring, Guage, & many happy years together......

Her name is Alley. Now, to explain why. When she was brought to the shelter she was a stray. They named her Gypsy. I wasn't overly thrilled with Gypsy as a name so I thought about Cleopatra or Alexandra. Then it dawned on me, a good female name would be Alley and still keep the connotation of her wanderlust.

Congratulations Gauge!  That is a great name for her too.

I have had several strays from shelters over the years.
Now that I am moving out of a no pet apartment complex I plan to have pets again.

I have written my congressman. Hopefully it will be a paid day off.

I will post pictures on my profile very soon. I will announce them when they get approved.

Congrats Gauge.  What type of collar does she have...protection?  consideration? play? permanent?

I don't have any pets, and I can't have dogs or cats, I'm allergic.  sigh.  But if I were to get one, I would definitely go to a shelter and rescue one.
