There are been a lot of very deep, thought probing posts lately and my mind is getting tired (comes with old age I guess).  Anyway, as I was reading the many posts, I began to wonder if there are certain words that people find annoying because they are pronounced incorrectly on a regular basis.  It all started with someone saying "irregardless".  While that is considered a word, it has never become an acceptable form of grammar.  It started me thinking about other words people use that tend to drive us nuts.  Some of my favorites (beyond the above):

Axe - Can I axe you a question?  These people don't say "tax" instead of "task" so why is the word "ask" so difficult?

Supposebly (sp) - I have no idea how one might actually spell that one

Expresso - I used to work in an Italian restaurant and the fact that the other servers could not properly pronounce this favorite coffee beverage drove me nut.  Espresso, really it isn't difficult.

and of course the ever poplur and annoying dominate, as in I am searching for a dominate, or I am a dominate.  I might search for a verb at times but never to be a human part of my life.

So what other words do people find others using, whether in writing or speech that tend to drive them crazy?

Hands down, My biggest pet peeve in the language is the term "holla".  It's not a word, so you're not "keeping it real" by using it.

Then there's the people who don't understand the difference between "imply" and "infer."

About "axe"--I doubt very much that you'd ever see anyone WRITE "Can I axe you a question."  It's just the way some people pronounce the word.  Like "sherbert" for "sherbet."  "Nucular" for "nuclear."  People pronounce things in strange ways...

Greatest language pet peeve of all time:

T/the A/annoying H/habit S/some P/people H/have O/of  U/using B/both C/captial A/and L/lower C/case L/letters T/to S/tart W/words J/just I/in C/case T/the R/reader M/might B/be A/a D/dominant O/or A/a S/submissive.  W/we W/would N/not W/want T/to B/be D/disrespectful O/or A/anything.

*shudders*  When I find the clueless, half-wit, fucktard that STARTED that whole thing I'm going to get medieval on his ass with a Louisville Slugger.

'rediculous'

I can't tell if people are purposefully using that or if they really don't know how to spell the word!

'ridiculous'

I have several too... but this thread was about language and word peeves.  S/He's at the top of that particular category...

Or maybe I should spell that S/s/H/he? ? ?

I always wonder why people ask someone to 'cut this on' or 'cut that on'.  Can you cut your head on?  It makes sense to say 'cut the power off' or something like that, but asking someone to 'cut the power on' never made any sense to me.

Mechanics from Georgia and Alabama seem to like to use the term 'shower down on it' for some reason when they want you to open the throttle.  I've heard other ways of saying it that never bothered me, but that one, for some odd reason, sort of irritated me.  I never told people who said it, but it still did.

I think the one i see the most is people using "except" in place of "accept".

I’m sure that anyone that has read a post of mine knows I am as guilty as they come at butchering the language. As an excuse…which we all must have… I have a slight hearing impediment. I don’t hear all the sounds correctly and I just repeat what I heard...even if wrong. By the way does the “….” bother you…lol ….pitiful I know a nasty habit.
My family teases me about my diction… they even started what they call the “Garnaled Dictionary"…because for some reason I would pronounce Gnarled as Garnaled. Supposedly as supposobly… smashed potatoes instead of mashed…on and on.
I am so bad that I often use a quote by Mark Twain…”I don't give a damn for a man that can only spell a word one way.
Butch

Prolly being used for probably.

The inproper use of the word "seen".  (It's HAD or HAVE seen indicating you SAW it in the past.  Saw is used if you have just seen something.  Saw for recent time Seen is for a more distant past.  It requires a use of helper verb.  Don't be afraid.

I'd like to take this time to apologise on behalf of the American peiople for  admitting the word "bling-bling" and "my bad" into the English language.  It's the best we've come up with.

I don't know why it grinds me but when people use the word "medium" instead of "median" to describe the center of the road.  Also when people switch the words "conscience" and "concious".

Dear LafayetteLady, Ladies and Gentlemen;

In my mind's eyes -- I am not as upset by poor spelling as most.  With a good many friends that suffer from Dyslexia or other learning disorders I can plod through on words spelled by the use of sounding out the word and not spelling things correctly.

What I do mind, is the IRCisms that have made writing a 'hazard' to one's reading pleasures.  I do understand the roots from the chat room to distinguish who was dominant or submissive, by how they wrote in a low case or proper case.  However, this is not a "cyber scene and or role play forum."  Even in reading porn magazines and or fantasy novels, there is nothing like this I/i business.

My other displeasure to witness, is when individuals do not spell out the words, .e.g. U instead of You, etc.  I am of the thought, that if you are not willing to take the time to spell out these words, the quality that is invested in self and or others will be just as lacking.  I will say, I can understand these short-cuts for phone text messages, as a person's thumbs can get most sore in typing things out fully.

I will mention that not all of our readers are English and or American English, so the language is a second language or one of many languages.  It is even more amazing how so many that post from different lands do so extremely well.  My applause is to those who have an excuse to write and express poorly from place where English is not the first language; write much better than those who have no other language but American English.

I admit fully, that I am not perfect in spelling, grammar and or the language's perfection.  Like most, I write from my heart and with my personal sense of logic.  It is always hoped, that the spirit of intent is shown; where the desire to listen and make every effort to understand and respond to the issues and proffer potential remedies and or a different view, as to be a positive influence and or for the better of another's life.

Respectfully submitted for consideration,
Lady Hugs

"NUcular" instead of "NUclear", "LIbary" instead of "liBRARy" and "BATtry" instead of "batTERy". Although, I do approve of "HURicin" as opposed to "huriCANE", "BUTta" = "BUTter" and some words ending with "ow" being pronounced as "er" like holler instead of hollow (but, I note that yeller annoys me). It's all very subjective and highly hypocritical on my part. ;-)

No doubt!  Many, many, many.  i know that people get homicidal over how bothered they are by the UC/lc thing, but i can't fathom it.  What makes it so hard to read?  It's the same letter, twice in a row, with a slash in between.  It's not like it's some ancient, foreign language that's impossible to decipher.  Cripes - i know alot of people loathe it but it is not hard to interpret.

But, i tell ya what......since it so obviously gives otherwise reasonable, rational, intelligent people screaming hissy fits, i'm gonna stop doing it.  i never had any reason for doing so.  Master doesn't care one way or the other.  When i started on these forums and some others, i saw it was done, thought it was alright, and started doing it.  No big deal.  i have never seen people get so bent out of shape over something so small.  Soooo, i'm going to do my part to ease the misery and suffering in the world by declaring right here and now that the UC/lc style is hereby over with in my posts.  Whew, i feel like such a humanitarian now
