So in my never-ending quest to make all my scholarly endeavors into an excuse to research BDSM and its practices, I am now writing a paper that takes various works of art and compares them to BDSM activities. I will be addressing if the activity is being displayed accurately and safely, and if not how it is done safely. Yeah... my teachers love me. Anyway, so the first work of art is "The Ecstasy of St. Theresa," which depicts a nun in the throes of religious ecstasy as an angel prepares to impale her with an arrow. I'm hoping to discuss it in the terms of needle play (practice of inserting needles into the flesh). However, for this, I need some sort of reference (preferably written) on the safe how-tos of needle play. Does anyone know of any books that contain that information? Also, if anyone has any other paintings or artwork that they would suggest, feel free!
