To me, beauty is many things and I often use it to describe an aspect of Perfection, though that’s not my sole definition of beauty. This is going to be hard for me to define, and I'll probably horribly botch the job, but let’s see if we can, huh?

Perfection to me is the total (Physical and Mental) achievement of what purpose a thing has; Example would be that a shark can be said to have achieved evolutionary perfection for its role, which is as an aquatic based predator. How do we know this? Well, sharks haven’t had the need to evolve for several millennia, I.E. the sharks that hunt in the oceans of today are nearly the same as the ones when the Romans first sailed the Mediterranean.

So once you have a purpose, you adapt, mentally or physically, to that role and eventually become perfect for the role. I can define the Mosin Nagat 1889, a rifle created by Czarist Russia at the turn of the 19th centaury and used well into the 1970's ( and used phenomenally well!) as being a thing of beauty because it fulfills its purpose and thus is "perfect". For anything else...feeding a baby, holding up a wall, building a treehouse, it's unperfect, and thus not beautiful.

I guess you can go into defining beauty with the Pirsig model of two views, Classical and Romantic.  Classical is looking at the purpose of a thing and then by comparing its purpose and looking at how well it fulfills that purpose to determine what ever you want about its beauty, where as Romantic is looking at something’s physical form and if it is found pleasing to the eye then it's beautiful, w/out regard to it's actual purpose.

(DISCLAMIER: I'm a fool and a fool does his best to make the rest understand something in as painless and simple way I can spit it out.)

We don't go in for a punishment dynamic. I don't respond well to it, besides we're not into s & m.

He says he finds me most beautiful when I'm softly smiling up at him, forgetting about dinner needing to be cooked, the weird noise coming from the car, who needs to be driven where. When my whole world in that minute is him.

Imperfection is Beauty, to me.  That is why, no matter how great an artist is, he or she can never duplicate the beauty of a sunset or a stormy sea or an eagle in flight.  Even the camera can't capture the beauty of nature because, no matter how good the film, the camera, the aperature setting, and the photographer, the photo can never match the unique quality of that particular moment and place in time.  It can never be adequately duplicated.  There are amazingly beautiful paintings and photographs but, you can always tell that it is not the same as the "real thing" and, even when you watch a sunset or look out over a snow covered mountainrange, it's only temporary and can never be repeated exactly the same way again.  It's always different and always beautiful.  It's the imperfections that make it unique and beautiful and to be cherished in the moment.

When people try to make themselves looks "perfect", either through plastic surgery or with a lot of make-up, they end up looking unnatural and, to me, not beautiful.  Have you ever noticed how every baby is beautiful, no matter how scrunched-up their face is or smashed-down their nose is or how squinty their eyes are or how roley-poly their chubby little face is or how goofy their hair is?  They are beautiful in their imperfections!  At least, to me they are.

i love nature's beauty of imperfections.

Oh, and i also love the beauty i see in the lovely raised stripes that my Master's whip places across my back and bottom and the bluish-purple bruises that mark my body from my Master's hands.  That is also something that i cherish as beautiful.

Edited to add:  i used to think that my scarred body and amputated leg made me "damaged goods" that no man would ever want to look at, much less touch.  Then, to my great surprise, i found out that there are many men who love the look of my stump and don't even see the scars, even the large rectagle of off-color skin on the front on my left thigh, that was the result of a skin graft.

Beauty comes in many variations of imperfections.

Without reading the thread first, I would say that for me... beauty is elusive.  Although others seem to see it in me somehow.  I have not learned to see it in myself.  I do not generally care for my looks.

Ugliest rifle ever made and I love my Westinghouse one rebuild by Valmet.  Okay, perhaps the Enfield is uglier but if you want to equate beauty with utilitarian, I would pick the Enfield any day, longer service life if  you could the Lee Metford and the modern sniper varients.  Either that or we just proved beauty is in the eyes of the beholder...

While I could probably wax eloquently on the subject of beauty, that it is internal and not external, and all that.

I am reading existential stuff right now, and frankly, the beauty which speaks to me is "agony."

Van Gogh's self portrait, showing the ear he cut off, and the madness in his brain is reflected in his eyes.

The Pieta, a mother holding her martyred son, the anguish and heartbreak in the look on her face.

The picture of John Lennon and Yoko Ono the night he died.  Him naked, lying on her, smiling lovingly into her.  She looking off to one side, not registering the weight of his leg on her, the look on her face seeming like she is already visualizing him being gone.

There are many different ways of viewing beauty.

When I was at work recently I saw a lady that was nearly 100 if not over that mark. Her face was heavily lined, she was tiny, her arms and legs were so very frail... yet she had one of the most truly beautiful expressions of joy on her face that I had ever seen. She exuded peace and contentment. Her blue eyes were bright, and I was happy just to watch her.... and I thought to myself.... she is just BEAUTIFUL, and I was grateful for the opportunity to behold the beauty that was hers.

Beauty is intellect and the ability to carry it well.  Beauty is creativity, beauty is spirituality.  Beauty to me is knowing who you are and where you come from... it has nothing to do with your face, or your skin.. all of that is just the wrapping.

Dear zuma,

i used to be the same way about my looks.  i was super critical of myself.  Whenever a man would tell me, "you have beautiful ankles" or "you have a beautiful ass" or "your eyes are so beautiful", i would always think, "Oh, he's just saying that because he wants something."

i have realized, i was judging my looks with some irrelevant standard that didn't apply to me.  In fact, it didn't apply to anyone because it wasn't realistic and didn't take into account my own uniqueness.  The uniqueness that makes each person different also makes each person beautiful.

Just looking at the picture under your name, which i am assuming is you, i would say that you look beautiful.  You look sweet and fun and uniquely yourself.  i think each of us should learn to celebrate our unique beauty.

slavegirljoy,

The photo is indeed me, although it is over a year old now.  I don't have the face or body of a girl who is often looked upon as a beauty by the majority of people.  I will admit, however, that there have been some who seem to find me attractive.  It is difficult to believe.  I suppose I should work on how I see myself, since I am not silly enough to turn to surgery to 'improve' myself.  Whatever I am, I am.

My thanks for your kind words.

beauty is a light in the heart.

Thank you, dawntreader, for your kind observation.  It makes you all the more beautiful in my sight.

You are most welcome and thankyou!

Agony and hilarity. It all has its place.

As for the existential stuff, when you're ready for the antidote it can be found in a package labeled "Hannah Arendt," and its beautiful.

beauty is in the details....a play of light woven into strands of hair, the curve of a brow, the barely visable pulse thrumming away silently under the flesh of one who moves you.

I have no specific type of beauty  that I prefer (or whatever equivalant for men). For me the truest beauty is often found in the things typically overlooked...

Once, while stuck in traffic, I  saw a wildflower (probably actually a weed by definition) that had pushed its way through a crack in the middle of the street and was thriving there with cars passing on either side. It was amazing. It was one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen...

BEAUTY is all about PERSPECTIVE.
