I found this on another site, and thought I'd post it here to see what the response would be like. quote: "Every nerd nation has a critically low birthrate that will result in a greatly diminished intellectual population. In fact, it is questionable if we will survive the next two generations, at most. We might become a dying breed; beaten back by the substandard masses. The time is coming very soon when the nerds and geeks will unite by the millions and fight back, or it will be smothered by the less intelligent subcultures. Millions of geeks working as an organized educated force towards a united cause, can and will become the mightiest force on the face of the earth. There is nothing that can stop us. Mobilized, united and armed the Intelligencia is ten times more powerful than the rest of the world combined. The first step you can take is to become a zealous promoter of Nerdfront and the GEEK'S BIBLE and help unite your slumbering 400-500 million brethren. We and we alone have the genes. Make no mistake about it — the Nerd/Geeks will soon unite by the millions and fight for it's survival, or it will be exterminated. No Time To Lose. If this drags on much longer the Intelligent Man and Woman will actually be in a hopeless position to fight back and survive. You have no choice, no way out, my fellow nerds and geeks! Yeah, I'm a nerd/geek. I played tabletop roleplaying games since the early 1980's. I would have played them sooner, but I didn't know anything about them before then... Roleplaying is still my #1 hobby/interest/passion. I played (well, mostly GameMastered) just about every incarnation of Dungeons & Dragons, as well as Iron Crown Enterprise's Middle Earth Roleplaying, FASA's BattleTech/MechWarrior and Shadowrun, West End Games' Star Wars, RuneQuest, Marvel SuperHeroes -- heck, I even played the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Roleplaying Game. My younger brother collected mostly X-Men comics as a kid, so I got to read them as well, and get into them as much as he did. Needless to say, we were quite disappointed with X3. Currently obsessed with Star Wars, especially Episode 3 and Knights of the Old Republic. I hope that The Force Unleashed comes out for the Wii platform... Yes, I have my share of Star Wars toys... I love NBC's Heroes, mostlybecause I can relate WAY too much with Hiro Nakamura. I think I kinda look like him... Except he's cuter and cuddlier and a lot more wealthy than I am... I'm doing my best to avoid getting into an MMORPG, although my brothers have been trying to get me in for quite awhile (first Asheron's Call 2, and now World of WarCraft). My baby brother was REALLY big into Asheron's Call 2.... However, if the Star Wars people find a way to fix Galaxies, or go forward with an MMORPG that uses a gaming console, well, I just might be doomed. Was obsessed with Star Trek TNG during its heyday... I wore a gold-plated TNG communicator pin on my uniform when I worked for a grocery store (while putting myself through college). I prefer to wear glasses instead of contacts, I'm short (5'9"), currently overweight and like to wear VERY comfortable clothes... Just perv my CM profile to see what I look like to complete the nerd/geek image... I love tech stuff (home theaters and computers, mostly) , even though I'm not a bona fide tech guy (engineer, computer programmer, etc.). I was always the smartest kid in elementary school, and my social skills were very much retarded. Oh, and I graduated magna cum laude from law school. So, I hopefully qualify to meet the minimum standard for geekdom. I could add more to my Geek/Nerd resume, but that would be overkill, methinks... [:)]

Cute and interesting idea... However, being a nerd does not automatically assign (in my mind) a greater intelligence as a person. I know (and love) many nerds, and many of them are very very skilled in very specific proficiencies, but over all are not more intelligent than the average Joe. I also know many people who are not nerdy at all and are absolutely, blindingly brilliant....

Taught himself French, Italian, computers, and electronics back in the 70's & 80's. He was great at anything he chose to do. He was also a Math wiz. He graduated from Malden Catholic High School. Went to Boston University for one semester but quit because he "already knew what they were teaching." He went on to run the computer systems for one of the major hospitals in Boston. He probably had an i.q. of 170 or thereabouts. Unfortunately he drank himself to death before he was 50. The one thing he couldn't do was to beat me in Chess though. Now that REALLY pissed him off! lol Ok, Nerd Ladies! Let''s BREED!!!

Hi Puella! You make a VERY good point about intellect not being the sole, exclusive domain of Nerditity. Then again, I guess it also depends on one's definition of the term: Nerd. For example, some people I know think that spending more than an hour in front of the computer and on the internet is enough to qualify one as a "nerd." I'd say that the people I have in mind are quite intelligent; they're rags to riches kinda folks, and now they're rich enough to loan money to banks. I think it's a rarity to find stupid people who can achieve as much as they did, given where they started from. Some people use the term "nerd" to define a person who is drawn to certain interests (roleplaying games, high tech electronics, Japanese animation, sci-fi fantasy entertainment, etc.). In my most ignorant and humble opinion, I choose to believe that the 21st century heralds a more tolerant and socially-diffused society. As such, the stereotypical uber-scrawny, physically-awkward, shirt-stained, coke-bottle-bottom-eyeglass-wearing nerds of yesteryear are becoming more aware of how they are perceived by the mainstream population -- and more importanly, are doing something about it. I am guessing that this awareness is brought about by better communication and information access through the internet. So, could it be that SOME of your more brilliantly intelligent people are "nerds" (by one defintion or another) but perhaps they merely assimilate better into your concept of mainstream society? So, does the stereotypical uber-scrawny, physically-awkward, shirt-stained, coke-bottle-bottom-eyeglass-wearing nerd still exist? Absolutely. However, I honestly think that their numbers are decreasing as their awareness grows and their ability to blend in with "normal" mainstream society increases. Lastly, I think that the younger population has a growing fondness for nerds -- stereotypical or otherwise -- mostly because the younger generation GETS IT. The younger generation (people in their late teens and 20's) understand what nerds find interesting and cool, primarily because they agree with them (or work for them, or attend their university lectures, or aspire to do both). Just take a look at television channels such as G4 and even the music channels that cater to the teen-aged to 20's demographic. So, yeah, Nerds Rule. [:)]

Second, please take this as a compliment towards your friend: By your description of him, he sounds like a nerd -- in the brilliantly intellectual manner, of course. I'd be interested to read what his other interests were. Third, please take this as a compliment: a person who can beat someone with an IQ of 170 at CHESS sounds like a nerd, too -- in the brilliantly-gifted-at-chess manner, of course. Do you play any other games besides chess? What are your other interests? Lastly, I agree that the world needs more, better chess players -- so get to work breeding, brother! [:D]

Well I always thought being a nerd was to be awkward, gawky , socially maladroit interested in technology, achieve not much and generally lack ambition and drive ,wear specs, have bags under your eyes, no muscles and be bald.Just like me in fact. Now I know it doesnt necessarily mean that I shall have to start walking taller. Thank you Jack,. Have a nice day !

I would guess that the label originated as a derogatory term for knuckle-draggers to denigrate a certain kind of people who generally fell into a specific category via a common set of traits. I think this evolved into a means to describe a certain kind of person who has a certain set of interests/world views. I presume that the desire for such a label existed, and still exists (for better or for worse). I am guessing that the label will go away when there is no longer any desire to use it. That is, when there is no more motivation for people to use it as a denigrating label, or on the other hand, as a banner to rally others who share similar interests or world views..? checks my label Yep. If the nerds have a critically low birthrate and they fight for their survival, does that mean there are going to be massive geeky orgies running rampant? Because I'm so there if they are. Seriously though, the only way to really fight back and take over is to kill all those deemed substandard or for the smart ones to screw like bunnies. The former seems a little too Nazi-like for my tastes, but the latter is just my style... provided someone in one of those orgies is dressed like an elf, and someone else like a vampire. Sweet! P.S.- I am one giant nerd.

ooooohhhh I get wet reading posts like these...I love geeks...gamer geeks, math geeks, IT geeks, Ren Faire geeks and yes...BDSM geeks....the more geek under your belt the more intense I am toward you. I've been that way since I was a kid. I have a house full of RPG books and we have more MTG cards than any one household should have (in the tens of thousands), we play MMORPGs and enjoy Ren Faires. We enjoy the company of those who can discuss philosphy and enjoy a really good sci fi. We have game nights where we just RPG or play card/board games. We also love Heros and go to gaming conventions. I suppose we draw the line at learning to speak Klingon (hope I'm not blackballed for that one).

My friends told me to watch the first movie while it was still in the theaters. I refused, thinking that a movie that involved beheadings was merely a hack-and-slash horror film. When I finally rented the video, I regretted not following my friends' advice, and became a moderately Highlander fan ever since. I've been to one convention (probably won't go to any more, though) and have the series collection on both VHS and DVD. [8\|] Oh, and I have one of the wall-hanger swords, too!

[sm=banana.gif] composes himself Hi earthycouple! Yah, I must admit to TRYING to learn Klingon, but apparently, I didn't really try THAT hard. I only did it during Star Trek: TNG's heyday, and so I can't speak Klingon -- or Quenya or Sindarin, for that matter. I've been to GenCon at Indianapolis once, and only wish I could have attended it while TSR was still in business. I hope to go to GenCon sometime now that they have it a few miles away from me here in California. Welcome aboard the Nerd Boat, earthycouple!

Wow, never knew I was a nerd. lol I enjoy a good Ren Faire, and some of the sci fi movies. Highlander was a good one. Enjoy the Anime as well, with subtittles. lol Thanks for pointing out that I am a nerd. :) lol Can't say I think of that as a bad thing though. :P

Bad news Jack, the GenCon in Anaheim last year was the last southern Cal one. The Indy show will still be happening every summer but the SoCal event was just losing too much money. I am completely down for the geeky orgies. Just tell where and when.[:D]

.....but isn't using a label just buying into the same paradigm that the 'knuckledraggers' you referred to are relying on? Either as a 'denigrating label' or as a 'banner to rally others' it is still another way of saying 'us and them'......and 'us and them' has a nasty habit, historically, of turning into senseless discrimination.
