Ok, in the interest of not being a noob forever, I've adjusted the ol budget to squeeze out enough to buy a treasure.
I spent the day back and forth.. collar or book.. SEXY collar or boring ol book....

I can wear it and feel damn SEXY collar,
or
read it and get more educated book.

Finally, decided to go with the obvious good choice and buy the fookin book.

There are several out there and seein as i have room in the budget for one  want to be a lil selective on which one i pick.
recommendations anyone?

I just got the book Butlers and Household Managers: 21st Century Professionals.  I have only read 4 chapters so far but I really like it.  We are hoping to take aspects from this book in order to improve our service and the managing of our house.

It is a book on how to give quality service; to me it is better than any book on play.  That is where my interest lies at the moment, improving my service to the house.

As for a BDSM book... Loving Dominant by John Warren or one of Dr. Robert Rubel's books.  He has one that is essentially the protocol book for his slave.

I'd definitely suggest Loving Dominant. Just finished reading it a couple months ago, and started kicking myself for not reading it sooner.

My fave... Different Loving. A BDSM overview. It explains the "mechanics" behind the lifestyle, not really erotic reading.  http://www.amazon.com/Different-Loving-Sexual-Dominance-Submission/dp/0679769560

As far as books go, I LOVE and ALWAYS recommend 'Screw The Roses, Send Me the Thorns' to everyone, its a great book to have around. Its esay to read and its kinda fun, things are easy to udnerstand, I have gone through 3 or 4 copies of it, and it never gets old, its nice to have as a 'refresher' at times. I foudn it a few days ago on amazon for under $20, it takes 4 to 6 weeks to get, but its worth the wait; at least to me it is, I use in an online class I teach a few times a year.

Octavia,

First off, check the local used bookstores and half.com as well.

As for books, I would recomend Dossie Easton's book The Bottoming Book or Midori's new book The Wild Side of Sex.  Both are some of the better books on doing D/s in a healthy way and both will make you a more informed "consumer" of dominant energy and provide you with the framework to be a better more healthy submissive.

I noticed, about a month ago, that Easton came out with a new Topping Book where she expanded the original with new information. I am wondering is she planning to do the same with the Bottoming book.

The New Topping Book and the New Bottoming Book were both published at the same time. They are expanded with new information, website links are updated, and the cute little comics inside were removed. Dossie and Janet (Janet Hardy's pen name is Catherine Liszt) said that it was because the books were going to be carried to a broader audience and the booksellers didn't want inappropriate illustrations to be seen when someone flipped through the book.

I second Screw the Roses, Send me the Thorns, as well as The Bottoming Book and/or The Topping Book.

I recommend Half.com where you can get more book for your buck. Half Price Books online (google them) is another place you might find stuff inexpensively.

S&M 101 is great but Jay Wiseman is something of a safety fetishist so it is dry at times, whereas the other two books above have more anecdotes and flavor in them.

If you have particular interests you can find a lot of special interest books at www.greenerypress.com
They are a publisher run by BDSM authors and have some great books and authors associated with them.

So far I'm a big fan of SM: 101, particularly if you looking to learn about the various kinky activities and ways to do them.

Since I am more into M/S in the spiritual service and surrender sense, the books that have provided the most information for me are the Master's Manual and Slavecraft. I look forward to reading MasterFireMa'am's manual. Miss Abernathy's stuff has provided me with some useful ideas.

If your more into play and toys, then these books probably wont be for you. Personally, I can't stand Screw the Roses because the perspectives and philosophies they have on D/S annoy the hell out of me.

I can stand it, and it's a good book, but I agree about the perspectives on D/s...irksome.

Master/Slave.

The abbreviation for Masochist and Sadism is almost always S/M and Master and Slave is almost always M/S. (Excluding the few jackasses who just HAVE to be different )

Some books will deal with relationships on a power and authority exchange level.

Other books view solely D/S as being about fulfillment of erotic sexual fantasies.

Its important to not just read one book in my opinion but a variety of books, because each book will present a different perspective on things.

I would say Screw the Roses, Give Me the Thorns is a great techinque book, but I have serious disagreements with the writers views on the nature of D/S and M/S in relationships, definitions, the purpose of limits, punishment, etc (Theres quite a long list of what I disagree with ).

The Topping and Bottimg books I would say, will provide a huge wealth of information for "sceneing", but their perspectives on relationships that go outside of this, I dont agree with. They are a lot easier to swallow them the very non biast opinions in Screw the Roses, Give Me the Thorns.

Now...you take a book like the Master's Manual by Jack Rinella, it has a wealth of information on having a relationship that is a lifestyle and not just a relationship that is simply extended erotic roles and fantsies as the two books above might lead you to beleiving.

Of course, at the same time, a lot of what Jack Rinella writes about is from the perspective of a Leatherman and the homosexual communtie so some of his concepts and terminology would be very foreign to the average hetrosexual couple into BDSM.

Books can also be very detrimental to someone new, because without all the variety of opinions and perspectives present in them, it can leave someone very confused when they are still trying to "figure it out". Especially if you are looking for "THE" answers as opposed to "YOUR" answers.

Dont get me wrong. I've learned a lot about techinque and the science of pain from reading that book. In fact, the science of pain parts are what make it worth buying above all other books in my opinion if your into pain. Its just all the other stuff that irks me a bit...
