For all of you out there looking for someone more hawkish than even the most doe-eyed member of the administration, I bring you "Smokin Joe" Lieberman!  Great news--The US Army recently raised the maximum enlistment age to 42, so Smokin' Joe's boy Matthew could be one of the first to sign up for daddy's war in Iran!  Keep holding your breath till that happens...

WASHINGTON - Sen. Joseph Lieberman said Sunday the United States should consider a military strike against Iran because of Tehran's involvement in Iraq.

"I think we've got to be prepared to take aggressive military action against the Iranians to stop them from killing Americans in Iraq," Lieberman said. "And to me, that would include a strike over the border into Iran, where we have good evidence that they have a base at which they are training these people coming back into Iraq to kill our soldiers."

...

"We've said so publicly that the Iranians have a base in Iran at which they are training Iraqis who are coming in and killing Americans. By some estimates, they have killed as many as 200 American soldiers," Lieberman said. "Well, we can tell them we want them to stop that. But if there's any hope of the Iranians living according to the international rule of law and stopping, for instance, their nuclear weapons development, we can't just talk to them."

He added, "If they don't play by the rules, we've got to use our force, and to me, that would include taking military action to stop them from doing what they're doing."

Lieberman said much of the action could probably be done by air, although he would leave the strategy to the generals in charge. "I want to make clear I'm not talking about a massive ground invasion of Iran," Lieberman said.

"They can't believe that they have immunity for training and equipping people to come in and kill Americans," he said. "We cannot let them get away with it. If we do, they'll take that as a sign of weakness on our part and we will pay for it in Iraq and throughout the region and ultimately right here at home."

This guy changes more than a chameleon.  Democrat to Independent.  This morning I heard him identified an Independent Democrat!

Yah, when he was running as Gore's VP I thought he was too liberal to be elected.  Now he's more conservative than many moderate Republicans on the issues that count.

And I'll never forgive or forget how strongly Hillary supported Lieberman before the Conn primary that he lost to Ned Lamont.  She offered only tepid support to Lamont in the general election--nothing more than she absolutely had to to maintain her standing in the party.

It sounds more like he wants to attack a specific instalation where illegal combatants are being taught to make car bombs and given weopons, not an invasion of Iran.  In fact that is what he directly says, unlike the title to this thread alledges.

Hillary has to take the position she does, is she going to start calling her Husband a Liar and Murderer?  Remeber Bill Clinton was striking places all over the globe, for these exact reasons.  Hell, Bill Clinton even bombed Sudan because Saddam had people helping Ossama manufacture Sarin Gas.  The left wing/peace groups before Bush got in liked to put the number of dead from the Sanctions and bombings at close to 5 million, don't hear much about it anymore, but you all remember.

No Jew I know gives a shit if Lieberman draws another breath.

Once he lied about being Shomer Shabbos he lost all support.

We got into Vietnam by just sending arms.  Then we sent advisors to train them on how to use the arms.  Then we sent aircraft to support the advisors in South Vietnam.  Then we sent Marines to Danang to protect the airfields.  Then we sent the Marines on "Armed Recon" and "Search and Destroy" missions in the jungle.  Then we sent the Army in to help the Marines.  Then we sent aircraft in to bomb the VC's North Vietnamese supply base.  Then we started bombing the supply lines in Laos and Cambodia.  Then we sent ground forces to interdict the Ho Chi Minh trail.

Yah, it's different this time...

The fact that Gore picked that dipshit should give a lot of Gore lovers pause.

And then in the mid 90's, we sent them McDonalds and in the early oughts, Starbucks.

Nixon betrayed his party platform by promising to pull us out of Indochina.

Then he carpet bombed the country into a lifeless moonscape.

While the locals were stunned, we wished the South Vietnamese government "good luck" and pulled out.

The North came in almost immediately, consolidated their power, and sent emissarys to try to reestablish diplomatic relations with the United States.

It is not like they dont want Starbucks and McDonalds.

p.s.

(Chorus)
Charlie don't surf and we think he should
Charlie don't surf and you know that it ain't no good
Charlie don't surf for his hamburger Momma
Charlie's gonna be a napalm star

Everybody wants to rule the world
Must be something we get from birth
One truth is we never learn
Satelites will make space burn
We've been told to keep the strangers out
We don't like them starting to hang around
We don't like them over town
Across the world we are going to mow them down

CHORUS

The reign of the super powers must be over
So many armies can't free the earth
Soon the rock will roll over
Africa is choking on their Coca Cola
It's a one a way street in a one horse town

One way people starting to brag around
You can laugh, put them dowm
These one way people gonna mow us down

CHORUS

                 Charlie Dont Surf, The Clash

Hm.  That's very interesting Sinergy.  And what happened to the South Vietnamese?  I mean, between the fall of Saigon, and the arrival of the first Starbucks.

Inquiring minds want to know!

Not very much, to be frank.  There was the inevitable "reeducation" but nothing like what Pol Pot did in Cambodia.  A lot of the refugees who came here were high level government types.  I've read the telegrams from our State and Defense Department people there during the 60s, and even they were disgusted at these people.  They were corrupt and brutal to their own people, and they were not at all itnerested in defending their country.  The South Vietnamese army was a joke--they'd throw down their weapons and run at the first sight of combat.

No country can be conquered unless it wants to be.

You asked what happened after that.

There once was a single country called Vietnam.

In 1954, by treaty, the country was divided on the 17th into North Vietnam and South Vietnam and the US retained a presence in the south.  They put out pamphlets and stuff and told all the Bad Communist People to go to the north.

When North Vietnam took over the entire country that silly treaty was discarded and the Vietnamese went back to being Vietnamese.

It was only a matter of time before they got they started jonesing for their Caramel Macchiatos.

Imagine the progression of Vietnam if the moderates had been left to vote as we promised Ho we would do after he helped us fight the Japanese...

Imagine how nice a place it would be if the kids were born with arms and legs instead of agent orange babies or if they could play in the fields that are still full of landmines and cluster bomblets, imagine if there were old people above ground instead of under it.

That would be one way.

Imagine if we had read "The Ugly American" in the 1950s and gotten the point of that and had insisted on political reform in the South, that might have worked too.

What is sad is Vietnam was a new experience I can forgive those mistakes but the Republicans, as always can't even predict the past with any accuracy and have made an even worse mess than Vietnam.  We could walk away and ignore Vietnam and get that oil later, we can't ignore the ME...

Re-education?  Why did they need re-educating?   And how did they do it?  And Pol Pot?   I think I've heard of that guy.  Who was he?  And what did he do in Cambodia?

No, I want to know specifically what happened to the South Vietnamese after the fall of Saigon, and before they had their first taste of Starbucks.

No one seems to know.

I interned at the National Archives and I helped answer a few researcher inquiries (letters) looking for info on good ole Ho.  He positively worshiped FDR, and he asked us to help him establish a free republic in Vietnam after the war.  He begged us, as the world's defenders of the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and under the Atlantic Charter, to not allow the French to reestablish their colony.  Finally, he pointed out that many of the same French officials who wanted to reestablish control over Vietnam had surrendered it to the Japanese and collaborated willingly.  I know because I held the telegram in my hands myself.

And guess what?  The telegram was covered in handwritten comments by three Undersecretaries of State.  The gist of them was "This guy is a kook and a nobody.  This does not need to be passed on to the President."

Asked and answered.

The country was reunited after Saigon fell.  So they went from being two artificial entities back to a single entity.

That sounds pretty quick & painless!

So what's all this business about "re-education" camps?
