Not to hijack the "Do Nipples Ever Come Back?" in the "Ask A Submissive/slave thread", but as a switch, I enjoy giving as well as receiving. Most nipple clamps come with rubber tips. I've always been leary of them, since I've always believed they can cut off blood flow, and that in itself can cause tissue and nerve damage. The pair I have are of the alligator clip variety, with the teeth (I've thrown the rubber tips away). Pain stim can come from the teeth of the clips combined with tension, and not impair circulation to a great degree. Mine have the adjustable screw, and as arousal increases, the screws are "cranked down". I'm afraid of the clamps that have rubber coating (my nipples are pert, but small), because I know that if they are applied, blood cannot flow into the uppermost part of the nipple. When the clamps are removed and the rush of pain occurs due to the blood reaching starved tissue, this must indicate a "risk" situation. Somewhat like a tournicate, which can be dangerous. What does everyone think? I would suspect anyone with long term effects can expect tissue damage.

Tissue damage occurs when the blood supply is cut off and the cells start to die. This starts to happen after about ten minutes, which is why that's the maximum period for using a tourniquet without releasing the pressure to allow bloodflow. If you want to play safe, don't exceed the ten minute guideline. Go for stronger clips for a shorter time period, rather than weaker clips over a long time. There's no such thing as a "no risk" BDSM activity, but if you know the risks you can make informed choices and work around them. Informed choice would also include knowing about your own personal risks - eg a person with diabetes/who smokes/is on certain medications is in a different category to someone who is healthy. "One size does not fit all."

Okay I have a question how would the fact that someone smoked make a difference with nipple clamps or were you just saying about other things? I guess I am just confused.

smoking will do more than effect your respiratory system or give you cancer

nicotine will cause not only cause the oxygen level within your blood to be lower it will also cause a decrease in blood flow to your extremities, to your muscles, to your skin.....

TO YOUR BRAIN

This is an important topic.  As the "victim" of unintential, but uninformed, prolonged nipple clamps, i can physically attest to the problems that can result.  i have had two little "growths" where the clamps bit into my skin for a prolong period. Luckily not on the nipples themselves but just next to them.  As was said here, there is no such thing as "no risk BDSM".    It really doesn't take much to permanently damage flesh,  inner tissues in sensitive areas, or genitals.

It is a bit complicated.  I'll try to go slow and cite basic web-published studies.

The general belief is that nicotine is a significant vasoconstrictor, which means it constricts the blood circulation system (veins, arteries and capillaries) that supply blood flow to your organs.  (Here we are concerned with skin and extremeties.)  Nicotine consumption can reduce blood flow by as much as 50% in the saphenous vein (the large vein running your thigh) says one study.

Then again, there was a significant study done that says nicotine PROMOTES vascularization.  The problem is that nicotine, the chemical, is radically different than the effects of smoking, so it is hard to know which effect is due to the complex chemical effects of smoking, and how much is due to nicotine.  Maybe smoke, not nicotine per se, causes the vasoconstriction?

Nonetheless, it is clear that cigarette smoking has a negative effect on blood flow.  Cigarette smoke contains a  relatively high proportion of carbon monoxide, another known vasoconstrictor.  Then nipple clamps will add to the blood flow problem of already compromised tissue.  If you start with compromised circulation (smoking, diabetes, etc.) and you then add another compromising factor, you get a greater risk.

By the way, "low tar" cigarettes create just as severe a compromising effect on blood flow and vascular health as do "regular" cigarettes.  There's no healthy smokes.  Just thought you'd want to know.

(Edited because it is the end of a busy day and I can't punctuate.)

"It's the same thing," he said.
