slaveluci -> Ron Paul on "The Colbert Report" (6/14/2007 8:18:07 AM)

Anyone see him on there last night?  Wasn't it refreshing to see a politician actually saying something sensible for a change?  He probably doesn't stand a snowball's chance of getting anywhere but he's sensible, honest, and not afraid to throw partisan nonsense out the window.  Oh, if only............luci

P.S.  Was it just me or did that segment about Hannity and Colmes and their differing responses to the old Reagan speech crack you up too[8D]?

Just watched a couple of minutes ago (TIVO, baby) and I have to say, it was freaking hilarious.

I would vote for Ron Paul, even if every time I hear his name I think of Rupaul.

It's funny, because I know some very Left-wing people, and they love Ron Paul.  They hear what they want to hear--someone criticizing the Republican Party and who is strongly against the war.  That's fine, except Ron Paul is a Libertarian and he's diametrically opposed to everything to the left of moderate Republicanism!  This guy wants to get rid of every federal agency except the Army--that includes Social Security, Medicare, student aid...you name it.

I just think it's maddening that people are so pleased about this guy when he's against almost everything they're for.

Sometimes not owning a TV causes me to miss things that I wish I had caught.
I'd like to see more of Ron Paul in action as it were...(and yeah, one of the most unfortunate name associations ever).

Look at the alternatives.

I look at it in the same light I view having the Governator in charge of California.  On some weird level, I think us Californians get some sort of psychic brownie points having a Governor who once ripped a punkers heart out of his chest and gripped it in his hands.

Why this does not bother my screaming liberalism is because he cannot actually do anything without engaging with our legislature.

AnencephalyBoy used a pliant Congress and abuses of the Constitution to try to eliminate all those same things that Ron Paul insists we should do away with.

I don't hear JUST what I want to hear.  I'm well aware of what Paul's beliefs are and I happen to agree with most of them.  You're assuming that I support him because I don't know the "whole story."  I do and I happen to like what I hear.  As far as liking him because he "criticizes the Republican party," that's not anything that would increase my support of him.  I have been very vocal about how asanine I feel it is to judge all Democrats or Republicans as thinking alike.  That's just ridiculous and I don't play that partisan game.

I can see your point if people are supporting him and you know he opposes the things (read: programs) they support.  I, however, identify as more libertarian than "left wing" and, though I don't think every federal agency should be abolished, I do agree with much of what Paul proposes.  As I said though, I don't think it's worth debating about because (as with almost all candidates I can truly support) he doesn't stand any real chance anyway[&o]......luci

slaveboyforyou -> RE: Ron Paul on "The Colbert Report" (6/14/2007 9:00:01 AM)

I come a long line of staunch Republicans, and I have been pissed off for years about the party being taken over by Christian fundamentalists and neo-cons.  I really despise this attitude that many people have that you have to pick a side and stay there.  I am an American, not a conservative or a liberal.  I wanted someone to strangle Sean Hannity when he attacked Ron Paul after the first debate.  He and many people in the Republican Party seem to believe that calling someone a liberal wins the argument.  I don't think people who are left of center misunderstand Ron Paul when they express admiration for him.  I just think that there are an equal amount of people in the Democratic Party that are disgusted with it's direction, just as there are Republicans who are tired of our party's direction.

philosophy -> RE: Ron Paul on "The Colbert Report" (6/14/2007 9:03:21 AM)

...from the little i've seen of Ron Paul, he may well be very libertarian but at least he doesn't try to hide behind a smokescreen about it. Us weak-minded left wingers have this odd fascination with honesty.....weird i know, but that's just us..........now, if only we could get the trick of admiring lying rats.....then we'd be good republicans instead..........

Yup, you're right.  I got excited and generalized...my bad[8D].  Just that I've heard this from others.  Guess it struck a nerve...lol....sorry........

But....is that all you got from my post.....just that?  Geesh[&o]........luci

And a second Amen to THAT!!  The Democratic party is just as guilty as the Republicans are of being cowards.  That's why someone who isn't afraid to speak out about what they really believe is so refreshing.  And why they're so easy to attack................slave luci

Well put, philosophy.

We keep getting politicians where you can turn the volume down and know they are lying because their lips are moving.

As I said, I have a lot of respect for the Governator.  He tried to do something obnoxious without attempting some feebly idiotic end run which might confuse a gerbil, the people in the state said STFU to him, and then reelected him.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Ron Paul on "The Colbert Report" (6/14/2007 9:30:34 AM)

Yes, that's all true, but he's the only Republican candidate who doesn't seem poised to throw this country down the toilet once and for all.  I don't like him because I don't think I've ever heard him say a blessed thing about the environment, but really, you don't think he's better than Mitt Romney or Tom Tancredo?

Besides, he doesn't want to get rid of the Army.  Let's not get carried away.  He's opposed to the draft, but which candidate isn't?

Archer -> RE: Ron Paul on "The Colbert Report" (6/14/2007 9:32:22 AM)

It is mostly when it comes to defense issues when I end up parting company with the libertarian party. (no big deal people part with their parties on issues all the time.
Have been able to vote Libertarian past few presidential elections because Georgia is not a swing state.
Livng in a non swing state affords us the opportunity to vote our conciounce even when the risks are high that the person we least like of the two major parties will win. We're not forced to choose the lesser of two evils.

It's not that I think the Libertarians should be elected in a landslide but that I believe they would force the issues to a middle ground and away from the fringes of both parties. Something that would be good for all of us.
Just want enough of them elected to make them a swing vote that is needed to get anything passed.

philosophy -> RE: Ron Paul on "The Colbert Report" (6/14/2007 9:33:57 AM)

The Governator was up in my neck of the woods recently....he's well recieved up here. The thing about amateur politicos (as opposed to ol' families) is that they seem to actually listen from time to time.

StructuredKing -> RE: Ron Paul on "The Colbert Report" (6/14/2007 9:34:41 AM)

Right, left-wingers are passionate about honesty. Except from their own politicians. Between Waco Willy Clinton, and Ted "Dead Hooker" Kennedy, that doesn't hold water. Maybe honest about wanting over half of my paycheck to fund social programs.

Left or right, they're politicians. They lie. They destroy peoples lives.

Personally, I voted for Hunter S. Thompson in 2004.

Cthlutu, 2008 (Why vote for the lesser evil?)!

philosophy -> RE: Ron Paul on "The Colbert Report" (6/14/2007 9:37:20 AM)

...i think, on the whole, i'd rather politicos lie about their sex lives than lie about why a war was begun. In the former case people may get upset but no-one gets a bullet through the brain...in the latter people still get upset and a lot of people die.

StructuredKing -> RE: Ron Paul on "The Colbert Report" (6/14/2007 9:41:50 AM)

Sorry, philosophy, I edited that message. Didn't think you'd reply so quickly.
