Opps do you think they'll know what I voted for?

I despise all religions. They are merely a way of controlling people.

Level -> RE: Islam (6/24/2007 11:55:45 AM)

No, it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb...... [X(]

TheHeretic -> RE: Islam (6/24/2007 12:09:23 PM)

        Of all the religions I explored or studied, Islam is the only one I didn't keep something from.

FullCircle -> RE: Islam (6/24/2007 12:17:54 PM)

There is a rise in Islamic banking in the UK at the moment it’s the oddest thing. It goes against Islam to loan people money so to get around this you tell that bank what you need and the bank buys the thing you need and you pay the bank back plus a little additional interest. It’s done so that it looks more like a business transaction and not a loan but if you ask me it’s a silly distinction to make. It highlights the way all religions are interpreted by people to justify their actions in life.

NakedOnMyChain -> RE: Islam (6/24/2007 12:28:27 PM)

From fairly extensive personal experience with it, I would say that Islam is vastly misrepresented my the American media, and I have a very favorable view of it.  That is to say, all the Islamic people I knew and know are great, intelligent people doing great, or at least peaceful things.  All of those in my acquaintance are simply living their lives the best way they can.  They're no different from anyone else.

In what ways do you see our media misrepresenting Islam?

lippyangelicsub -> RE: Islam (6/24/2007 12:41:29 PM)

Hi, i am not American so cannot  say how Islam is represented over there, but here in the Uk i think it is often unfairly represented, myself and my daughter are muslims, we are not terrorists nor is anyone we know.  In fact all the muslims i know are  peaceful creatures.In any religion you get fanatics and people that 'need' more adversity and pain than the average jo blogs, they create problems and create adversity where this need be non, I think this makes them feel better in a sick way and they feel they are serving god more, which is debatable.  Islam has it's fanatics as much as anyone else and even some i would consider not quite right in the head, but thats not everyone and majority of muslims i know despise these people and the images they create for the world about Islam. lippy

FullCircle -> RE: Islam (6/24/2007 12:49:56 PM)

Islam seeks to stifle debate into its practices, no?

lippyangelicsub -> RE: Islam (6/24/2007 1:00:08 PM)

sorry what practices?  Terrorist activities said to be carried out under the banner of Islam are not always true, Islam is about peace and harmony not war and  general murder and creating bloodbaths, thats people that do that, it isn't advocated by Islam, take Islam away from the people it is a beautiful religion that encompasses a whole way of life(not really sure me getting spanked or wanting to spank , quite fits in, but nothings perfect), it in itself takes away a lot of the stresses of life, but it is when everyone starts to interpretate it to their own ends that the problems  start and when people start mixing culture with Islam and saying it is the same thing which it isn't. lippy

Thanks!

I could be a smart-alec and say that the very fact that the original question needed to be asked gives you the answer.  Honestly, though, I would be hard-pressed to give you specific examples.  It just seems that all the stories I have seen on Islam in the news haven't been about any of the positive things that they could have been.  For example (and I know this is local and I'm in a very red state), our "Religion" section of the local paper (don't get me started) covers all of the local Christian churches' and occasionally the Jewish temple's happenings and goings-on, but the only time you see Islam mentioned is in the editorial section asking the same question that is being polled here, on in a very negative light in articles.  Keep in mind that I live five blocks from a major university (Purdue) with a significant Islamic population.  We have mosques.  There are positive things going on.  They just don't get covered.

Now, take this up a notch to the national level, and my experience at the local level doesn't seem to have changed much.  You only see the negative press or the half-heartedly neutral, questioning press, never the positive.

FullCircle -> RE: Islam (6/24/2007 1:10:53 PM)

Why did Ayatollah Khomeini issue a fatwa calling on Muslims to kill Salmon Rushdie if it’s such a peaceful religion? You can only judge a religion by its most notable religious leaders and followers. Islam has only itself to blame that it is perceived as violent because every time a debate starts into Islam people get threatened by its religious leaders.

Hello lippy, thanks for your input [:D].

Do you think you would feel the same if you lived in Iran, or Saudi Arabia?

doxem -> RE: Islam (6/24/2007 1:15:22 PM)

Hello
I can only speak from my own experiences and exposure to Islam by Muslims own words.
When I worked in Saudi Arabia back in 1986 I knew several Saudi's I got along well with.
We would openly talk about many things, but when it came to religion i mostly listened.
They once tried to explain to me how Jesus and Mohammed were both profits and They recognized Both as such.
When They, the Saudi's, told me how the Koran told of Mohammed's spreading Islam as He and His followers met Other tribal encampments.
They would witness Islam tooThem and then ask Them to Join Them.
If They accepted They would follow and learn of Islam.
But if They declined Mohammed and His followers would kill everyone and move on.
Sounds like a good religion to join.
OR
How Could You even consider any Religion making the conditions a life if You join or Death if You don't a Religion.

My state's redder than yours......[:-]

Hmm, not always a good thing [>:]

Let me ask this: why do you think there is a misrepresentation of Islam here?

And the fatwa lives on......

"A high-level Iranian cleric has escalated the rhetoric against author Salman Rushdie, saying the 1989 fatwa calling for his killing cannot be revoked.

"Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami, who has an influential post delivering the sermon on state radio during Friday worship, warned Britain it was defying the Islamic world by granting a knighthood to Rushdie..."

Ah, Now You speak of the only true religion mankind has ever been loyal too.

MONEY, or its equivalent.
GREED and POWER and CONTROL.
Nothing about fairness and goodness, just Greed.

Hi  Level i cannot say how i would feel as i haven't lived in either country but if you wait a 2 yrs let me finish at uni lol i will let you know as i am  relocating to one of either of those two countries then :) lippy

doxem -> RE: Islam (6/24/2007 1:31:06 PM)

Islam in itself is not a violent Religion.
It is like all other religions in that it is used to push emotioms in its followers in the name of religious revenge.
Think about being trained to answer prayer call 5 times per day evryday of Your life, and to spend uncounted hours each day reading the same Doctrine over and over so that You know the Koran or any Bible word for word from memory.
True Islamics can.
I have no problem with any Religion a long as it is a real Religion that professes leading a good life and treating Others here on Earth with understanding and respect.
Most Muslim's respect only Muslim's, and the rest are Infidels.
