Okay, so what's up with this?  It started as a publicity stunt that turned out to be true?

tonight's show was supposed to be a memorial for vince mcmahon; who, as a character died in a limo explosion 2 weeks ago... they could not go further with that (and i doubt  the entertainers could wrestle safely so soon after learning this) storyline after Benoit's real-life death

LadieofShadows -> RE: Professional Wrestler Chris Benoit Dead (6/25/2007 9:45:28 PM)

latest news break calls it a double murder suicide...not sure if I believe it...but what do I know?Im hoping its not true...the tarnish of Benoits achievements will be irrepairably damaged by that...

LadieofShadows -> RE: Professional Wrestler Chris Benoit Dead (6/25/2007 9:55:47 PM)

ok...that didnt come out right...but Im sure you all het the point I was trying to make...albiet badly.

darchChylde -> RE: Professional Wrestler Chris Benoit Dead (6/25/2007 9:58:34 PM)

as far as i can see... you said it right the first time; hard to say what to believe these day, we've long learned that our celebrities are human too

I met Benoit in a bar in O'hare once. He was very kind to the people who knew who he was and signed autographs and posed for some pictures even though he was clearly exhausted. He did strike me as impossibly pumped up so some sort of roid rage incident would not shock me.

It does strike me that a whole lot of pro wrestlers are dying early in the last few years.

as for "roid rage", due to the recent (in the last 10 years) stringent testing in the last 10 years, there  are no wrestlers who currently use steroids... just 2 and 3 years ago, there was a great series of suspension "injuries" due to steroids being on the rise again for newer performers, which caused a renewed crackdown

as for the last few years having had so many deaths, you have to look at the perspective... professional wrestling did not become a true worldwide phenomena until the early 80... many of the top performers of  that time are still active and on a grueling schedule

so for those most famous of superstars and veterans, many are at least 20 years into the most damaging and physical jobs in entertainment... it is right around time for them to be going, not meaning to sound cold

I'm going to have to say I strongly doubt that pro wrestling is steroid free.

I follow amateur wrestling pretty closely and I saw Kurt Angle win the gold in Atlanta. He was a sleek and powerful heavyweight (90-100kg weight) wrestler. I saw a couple of his appearances on pro wrestling programs in 2005 and 2006, He was much bulkier and is billed at 238 lbs.which is 20lbs. at least over his olympic fighting weight.

Brock Lesnar was also a gifted amateur that I saw on ESPN. He also wrestled as a heavyweight but now, as a pro, is much much bigger and lists his weight as 270lbs. which is a full 50 lbs. over his amateur fighting weight.

Elite athletes do not ad 20 to 50 lbs. of non fat body weight without pharmaceutical help.

*kicks CM for eating my post*

No, Katy, it's a horrible coincidence, it seems.

The stunt was using WWE boss Vince McMahon, it had a storyline about him "dying" and I'm sure he would soon "come back" somehow.

The Benoit incident, as far as it appears, is unrelated.

RCdc -> RE: Professional Wrestler Chris Benoit Dead (6/26/2007 3:16:39 AM)

A real tragedy, a Benoit was a great wrestler, and by all accounts a decent human being. I remember when he first came to the WWF (as it was then) as the 'rabid wolverine' (IIRC) - even then he seemed something special, and his last few years have seen him progress to become one of the better WWE (as it is now [;)]) wrestlers.

As for wrestling books, and 'getting it', I'd also recommend Mick Foley's 'Have a Nice Day', and also the two follow ups, 'Foley Is Good' and the recent 'Hardcore Diaries' which are a fascinating insight (warts and all) into the backroom machinations and politics of the wrestling business, which comes out surprisingly well (though, maybe not that surprising being as Vince McMahon still pays a good portion of Foley's paychecks, but even so....)

As for The Undertaker - he's sheer class, and my all-time favourite wrestler. I really must pick up that 3 DVD retrospective sometime soon......[:D]

I agree that Benoit seemed a decent guy, I have to wonder if he did kill the family and himself, what kind of mental problems he was having. As someone else said, it could be steroid-related.

RCdc -> RE: Professional Wrestler Chris Benoit Dead (6/26/2007 4:27:41 AM)

Wow - I don't know what to say.  While he was never one of my 'top' favourites (the Undertaker just rocks) he was a major player in my memory and this is just a terrible thing to occur.  Yeah for once, am speachless.

Peace

KatyLied -> RE: Professional Wrestler Chris Benoit Dead (6/26/2007 4:44:43 AM)

Steroids can cause extreme mood swings.  I do wonder if steroid use will be a factor in this.  As far as saying that steroids aren't used, I don't believe that.  People are good at masking.

They are saying it was a murder/suicide, having money often does not always mean you are getting adequate
care for your mental health issues.
I feel sorrier for his wife and child, they were the innocent victims here.

Real0ne -> RE: Professional Wrestler Chris Benoit Dead (6/26/2007 12:32:37 PM)

i'm going to really miss him

amaidiamond -> RE: Professional Wrestler Chris Benoit Dead (6/26/2007 12:37:41 PM)

Oh thats so sad.....

KatyLied -> RE: Professional Wrestler Chris Benoit Dead (6/26/2007 12:51:02 PM)

Thank you MsKatHouston, it looks like there is a lot speculation that steroids may be implicated.

domiguy -> RE: Professional Wrestler Chris Benoit Dead (6/26/2007 12:53:39 PM)

It's a shame he hung himself....It might have been cool to see if he could have made Scott Peterson submit once in a figure four leg lock.
