Loved and then respected.

SirNico -> RE: Would you rather be loved, respected or feared? (6/26/2007 8:40:10 PM)

Feared for the strength of character, loved for strength of commitment, respected for the respect shown to others.

......remembered......[:D]

There is a line from the movie "The legend of Bagger Vance" which has always stuck with me.

"After the horror he had experienced, Cattan Junah went home to Savannagh to forget, and to be forgotten."

I am not sure I want to be remembered.  I have to force myself to say "you are welcome" when students who tell me I changed their lives, thank me for doing so.

The part of respected or feared is that it puts other people in charge of my legacy.

I am doing what I feel has to be done from what I have seen.  I will go to my dirt sleep knowing I did what I had to do whether anybody else on the planet gives a good gawd damn about me or what I have done.

Feared.  Because then I can rape and pillage as i choose.

If I can be loved and respected for doing so, I'll take it.

Yours,

benji

(looks up at Benji and giggles)

loved and respected go hand and hand.

Level -> RE: Would you rather be loved, respected or feared? (6/27/2007 4:46:17 AM)

Love, to me, is the ultimate.

Respect.... I don't respect many people, at all. I do try to be respectful, though.

Fear... is useless to me, unless you're trying to harm me or that which I love.

instynctive -> RE: Would you rather be loved, respected or feared? (6/27/2007 4:50:27 AM)

Correct on the movie and translation, but incorrect on surmising that I meant Ms. Mirren..

Marina is in the movie as an extra.  I used to have a collection of screen shots of her and her performance.

I like your sunglasses, BTW.. lol

Caligula, but I think you meant to say Helen Mirren.

Respected by all. Then feared by those I would be forced to compel and loved by those I wouldn't and those I hold dear.

One who knows me must respect me. Respect, then, is to know me for who I am. I wish to be loved for who I am, if at all, so I would be loved through respect. Feared, too, for those who would contradict who I am; I would not weep for loss of their love, since, should they be in contradiction to my identity, would love could be lost by a fundamental foe?

Yes!
Ideally by a person or persons, knowing, understanding, and appreciating why and when to associate the appropriate sentiment.

...i can see what you mean, but i kinda stand by wanting to be remembered. Preferably for making the world a slightly better place. It probably is a form of vanity, but i figure everyone is allowed a modicum of that.......

I find all 3 responses appropriate depending upon the person(s) and the circumstances.

stella40 -> RE: Would you rather be loved, respected or feared? (6/27/2007 6:51:56 PM)

Hmm. Feared? I try to avoid situations in which I might be feared by someone, but admit sometimes it's necessary. Respected? I have that within me, and when you project that outwards towards someone else you usually get it back anyway. So I guess my first answer would be loved. However I would also settle for befriended and accepted.

In an ideal world, Love me. Respect me. Fear me.

Reality check: Fear me. Just stay out of kicking distance.
