...seeking religious freedom...; well..... not entirely true. England dumped on the country; their diseased, their criminals, their insurgents, their poor, in short, their derilict of society. Most came here, indentured, to work the land for money yeiding crops to be sent back to England.  What we have been taught...'They left England for religious freedom'; is a 'half' myth.

Oh good grief !The separation of church and state was meant to keep the "state" from running churches, so we could worship as we see fit...it was NOT intended to eradicate God at every turn...gee whiz....

Was also intended to keep Churches from running the "State."  Hence the use of the term "separation."

That is correct, the majority of "immigrants" coming to the US from England in those days were indentured servents or "slaves" and the other "half" of the story is the one group that claimed to have come for religous reasons immediately set up a Theocracy  and started their own version of the Inquisition by burning non-believers at the stake.

Appealing to the lowest common or at least a populist denominator is what has made, as an example, Hollywood so financially successful with the consequence of well payed jobs all across the world, even in the UK, while hi brow elitism has resulted in the UK film industry being a critical "success " and a commercial failure, with subsidy as the last resort.

Its not a question of "like", I quite like some modern paintings. Does Salvador Dali count  ?I dunno, I just would not give an artist one halfpenny of subsidy. Thassall.

Yeah geeze!!! Almost, just as Stella's talking about, right in action here.
 Missy.

MsB is an artistic impressionist, so she says.
I rest my case, m'lud.

MsV: I have posted before that large numbers of those who are educated to the third level, ie 1st degrees or diplomas are financed in their employment by the state ie by the plebs they left behind in the educational race.
It is  that subsidy to which I object, but, just as it is being so cheerful that keeps me going, such subsidies sustain the UK economy on a downward spiralling  helter skelter.

You do not know the particulars of Stella's life, seeks.  Many artists are funded by private grants, scholarships and trusts.  Both playwrites and bricklayers have their place in society and neither should be kicked when they are down; to do so is poor sportsmanship.

A word of advice. In the USA Judge seldom overrule one another. I would not waste any time or cash on this. Yes- one hears about reversals- but having been down that road - the % is small.

I too- lost a housing discrimenation complaint this month. I thought for sure I had a case.

On the other hand- I won a tax reduction.

On Poland-  I am German and Polish. For years I wanted to explore my roots.  I dont think I would tho- now- with Polands anti gay climate. Actually- much of the world has an anti US attitude- or at best an anti Bush posistion. SO I feel I could be in danger off of US soil. Never mind that the slums of Detroit are likely more deadly then EU.

At age 43- let me say- the best revenge is living well.

Spend as little time on negative energy.....as possible. It takes from you. Makes you bitter. Please dont be bitter. THe deck is stacked.

We too have a saying- sometimes you are the bug- and sometimes you are the windshield. [a femail country song]

HUGS to you my friend. May your tears turn to joy from the inner you and your friends on CM that understand.

Another BRAVO;

On traveling to Europe...better try to hide that you are american; rather try to speak, and look like a Canadian; you'll be safer.

And we owe that to the Bush government....er; I mean the democratic house; tis the season.

I would never kick a bricklayer under any circumstances, they might kick back.
In fact bricklayers are far more valuable to a society than are most artists.

In the UK Arts subsidy is a way of life and I resent it.

The point I am trying to make is that Art should stand on its own feet and if it had mainstream appeal subsidy would not be required. NO?
I just heard a programme about Tchaikovsky who went to Paris and arranged a concert of his own music at a time when he was not recognised as the trancendental genius that he turned out to be.
What he didn't do was expect a subsidy. Gettit ?

Funnily enough snotty nosed classical music critics will denigrate and deride Gershwin, financially self sufficient and a quality popular composer if ever there was one  and heap praise on some excruciating dissonent incomprehensible music that will NEVER become popular. Getthat
For Jazz lovers, where is Ornette Coleman now ?

I pretty much view bricklayers as artists.

And, as an artist, I do pretty much agree that subsidy has become a way of life and it's to the detriment of the arts community quite frankly, on an individual basis.  I'm not against funding of large venues etc - but personal funding is pretty much hit and miss and this is a pretty negative thing for artists as individuals and makes the whole process pretty laughable.

Peace

1 - Seeks, while I agree there is a lot of pretenders out there calling themselves artists, Jackson Pollock is not one of them. He was painting fractal geometries and illustrating chaos theory. He didn't paint snapshots of objects, he described the movement of energy and wind and water through natural environments. Understanding this would require spending some time in front of an actual Pollock and a willingness to allow, just for a moment, that there is meaning there.

2 - You obviously don't hang with the right kind of bricklayers.

3 - Taking a thread about the wrongful dismissal of someone who happened to be an artist but might have been a bricklayer, and making it a rant against public funding of the arts, is in the dictionary, under Hijack.

Many religious people that went to the states were intolerant religious fanatics who couldn't bear living in a country where they had to live with people of other persuasions. It is not for nothing the US has a sizeable population of christian fundementalists. Not far from where I used to live is a chapel which is still the home of people with the fundementalist persuasion. Fortunately most of the congregation emigrated and took their extreme and idiotic religious views to the US and now we are left with a powerless rump. I am just grateful that it is America that has such warped people and we are left with a secular society. They didn't have to go but thankfully they did.

You didn't just get the poor and the dispossessed, you got many rabid capitalists who thought the exploitation of people was their right and thought social reform in their own country was infringement of their rights to make money regardless of their victim's rights. You are welcome to that lot too.

As for blaming Britain, Britain has been a country for 300 years, the US has been a country for 231 years so don't go blaming Britain for the faults made in that time. At the point of independence Britain had a huge trading deficit with the colonies and after independence the wealth of the US dropped enormously. The idea that Britain exploited the colonies is an absolute nonsense. The real reason for the revolutionary war was because the colonists were land hungry and the British wanted to prevent the colonists from taking Indian land. Also the founding fathers wanted the freedom to exploit their fellow colonists without interference. That is what they got and that is what they did. As I said, don't blame Britain for the choices of the US.

What you did get from the English and the Brits in general was a political class, entrepeneurs and where did you get the ideas of individual freedom from....oh, the English!!!!

I drink and lunch with a couple of Americans almost every day, they live and work over here and don't seem to have a problem. Many American tourists frequent my local bar (centre of Amsterdam) and politics is never discussed or when it is, the Americans bring it up and for some reason feel the need to apologize for Bush. I don't think antipathy for the Bush administration comes out in hostility to ordinary Americans. From my experience everyone just drinks and chats and gets along without any personal judgement. You certainly wouldn't have any problems in Germany for being American nor any western European country. Yes, there are always arseholes but every society has them.
